Intimate Encounters: Sympathy in the Modernist and Contemporary Novel

This thesis explores ideas of sympathy in the works of modernist authors D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and Elizabeth Bowen, and contemporary novelist Ian McEwan. Read in parallel with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, this study argues that in the selected modernist and contemporary texts sympathy takes place between feeling bodies that exist in constant interaction with each other and the world. My chosen authors challenge the view that fellow feeling is synonymous with gaining rational knowledge of other minds; on the contrary, their works suggest that feeling for and with others often transcends the limits of cognition. As such, obtaining a clear view of other minds cannot only fail to lead to intimacy but it can even be considered violent and dangerous. The authors at the centre of this thesis are suspicious of hyper-visibility because they associate it with desires for subordination and possession, ideas that acquire an unprecedented urgency in the aftermath of the First and Second World Wars. Instead of clear sight and rational knowledge, my chosen writers place sympathy in a semi-luminous zone of ambiguity, where the other’s contours remain blurred and not easily discernible yet this haziness allows for the emergence of an alternative ‘manner of seeing’ rooted in affective attention to the fragile human body. As such, this thesis shows the existence of a different kind of modernism that is interested in haziness instead of clarity, soft flesh instead of hard biological matter, and imperfection instead of totality. The last chapter of this study, dedicated to McEwan’s engagement with modernist legacies, argues that modernist ideas about fellow feeling are still relevant in twenty-first-century literature, continuing to energise and challenge contemporary thinking

Determining the 7Li(n,gamma) cross section via Coulomb dissociation of 8Li

The applicability of Coulomb dissociation reactions to determine the cross section for the inverse neutron capture reaction was explored using the reaction 8Li(gamma,n)7Li. A 69.5 MeV/nucleon 8Li beam was incident on a Pb target, and the outgoing neutron and 7Li nucleus were measured in coincidence. The deduced (n,gamma) excitation function is consistent with data for the direct capture reaction 7Li(n,gamma)8Li and with low-energy effective field theory calculations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Cruiser 350 FS (Syngenta) is a widely applied thiamethoxam-containing seed treatment product. Despite of this fact, little is known about its side effects on non-target organisms other than bees. In this study, the effects of Cruiser 350 FS mixed in soil in different concentrations (according to OECD standards) were investigated on the mortality and reproduction of a Collembola species (Folsomia candida). On the basis of springtail mortality data, an LC50 of 223.6 mg/kg and a NOEC of 24.5 mg/kg were determined for Folsomia candida. The following toxicological limits were obtained on the basis of the reproduction data from the springtail test: EC50: 61.73 mg/ kg, NOEC: 12.27 mg/kg. Moreover, mortality tests were performed in microplates on two nematode species of different feeding and reproductive strategies. After 24 hours of exposure, treatment had no effect on mortality up to a concentration of 35 g of thiamethoxam/l in the r-strategist bacterivorous Panagrellus redivivus; while the species-specific LC50 was determined to be 0.19 g/l for Xiphinema vuittenezi. Our results proved the K-strategist plant-feeding X. vuittenezi to be more sensitive than the r-strategist bacterivore P. redivivus. Our results highlight the difference in the sensitivity of nematodes of different feeding and functional groups, suggesting the importance of a more sophisticated study approach

Unfavourable birth outcomes of the Roma women in the Czech Republic and the potential explanations: a population-based study

BACKGROUND: Data on the health status of the Roma people in Central and Eastern Europe are sparse and the reasons for their poor health are not clear. The objective of this study was to quantify the differences in birth outcomes between Roma and non-Roma mothers in the Czech Republic and to investigate the potential causes of such differences. METHOD: A population-based study recruited 8938 non-Roma and 1388 Roma hospitalised singleton births that occurred in two Czech districts (Teplice and Prachatice) between 1995 and 2004. During their stay in hospital, mothers completed a questionnaire on their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and maternal smoking and alcohol consumption. Data on maternal height and weight and on infants' birth weight and gestational age were taken from hospital records. RESULTS: Birth weight and gestational age of Roma infants was 373 (SE 15) g and 0.92 (0.05) weeks, respectively, lower than in non-Roma infants. Controlling for demographic, socioeconomic and behavioural factors reduced these differences to 133 (18) g and 0.57 (0.06) weeks, respectively (all p-values < 0.001). In terms of binary outcomes, the Roma vs. non-Roma odds ratios were 4.5 (95% CI 3.7–5.4) for low birth weight (< 2500 g), 2.8 (2.2–3.4) for preterm birth (< 37 weeks of gestation), and 2.9 (2.5–3.4) for intrauterine grown retardation (<10(th )percentile of birth weight for gestational age); controlling for all covariates reduced these odds ratios to 1.7 (1.3–2.2), 1.5 (1.1–2.0) and 1.3 (1.0–1.6), respectively. Maternal education made the largest contribution to the ethnic differences; the role of health behaviours was relatively modest. CONCLUSION: There are striking differences in birth outcomes between Roma and non-Roma mothers. The causes of these differences are complex but largely socioeconomic

Strange meson production in Al+Al collisions at 1.9A GeV

The production of K+^+, K^- and φ\varphi(1020) mesons is studied in Al+Al collisions at a beam energy of 1.9A GeV which is close or below the production threshold in NN reactions. Inverse slopes, anisotropy parameters, and total emission yields of K±^{\pm} mesons are obtained. A comparison of the ratio of kinetic energy distributions of K^- and K+^+ mesons to the HSD transport model calculations suggests that the inclusion of the in-medium modifications of kaon properties is necessary to reproduce the ratio. The inverse slope and total yield of ϕ\phi mesons are deduced. The contribution to K^- production from ϕ\phi meson decays is found to be [17 ±\pm 3 (stat) 7+2^{+2}_{-7} (syst)] %. The results are in line with previous K±^{\pm} and ϕ\phi data obtained for different colliding systems at similar incident beam energies.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure

Isospin dependence of relative yields of K+K^+ and K0K^0 mesons at 1.528 AGeV

Results on K+K^+ and K0K^0 meson production in 4496^{96}_{44}Ru + 4496^{96}_{44}Ru and 4096^{96}_{40}Zr + 4096^{96}_{40}Zr collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.528AA GeV, measured with the FOPI detector at GSI-Darmstadt, are investigated as a possible probe of isospin effects in high density nuclear matter. The measured double ratio (K+/K0K^+/K^0)Ru_{Ru}/(K+/K0K^+/K^0)Zr_{Zr} is compared to the predictions of a thermal model and a Relativistic Mean Field transport model using two different collision scenarios and under different assumptions on the stiffness of the symmetry energy. We find a good agreement with the thermal model prediction and the assumption of a soft symmetry energy for infinite nuclear matter while more realistic transport simulations of the collisions show a similar agreement with the data but also exhibit a reduced sensitivity to the symmetry term.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in Phys. Standardized Competencies for Parenteral Nutrition Prescribing: The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Model

    Get PDF
Parenteral nutrition (PN) provision is complex, as it is a high-alert medication and prone to a variety of potential errors. With changes in clinical practice models and recent federal rulings, the number of PN prescribers may be increasing. Safe prescribing of this therapy requires that competency for prescribers from all disciplines be demonstrated using a standardized process. A standardized model for PN prescribing competency is proposed based on a competency framework, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.)–published interdisciplinary core competencies, safe practice recommendations, and clinical guidelines. This framework will guide institutions and agencies in developing and maintaining competency for safe PN prescription by their staff
