    ICE DETECTION ON AIRPLANE WINGS USING A PHOTOGRAMMETRIC POINT CLOUD: A SIMULATION

    Abstract. This study describes some tests carried out, within the European project (reference call: MANUNET III 2018, project code: MNET18/ICT-3438) called SEI (Spectral Evidence of ice), for the geometrical ice detection on airplane wings. The purpose of these analysis is to estimate thickness and shape of the ice that an RGB sensor is able to detect on large aircrafts as Boeing 737-800. However, field testing are not available yet, therefore, in order to simulate the final configuration, a steel panel has been used to reproduce the aircraft surface. The adopted methodology consists in defining a reference surface and modelling its 3D shape with and without ice through photogrammetric acquisitions collected by a DJI Mavic Air drone hosting a RGB camera and processed by Agisoft Metashape software. The comparison among models with and without the ice has been presented and results show that it is possible to identify the ice, even though some noise still remains due to the geometric reconstruction itself. Finally, using 3dReshaper and Matlab software, the authors develop various analysis defining the operative limits, the processing time, the correct setting up of Metashape for a more accurate ice detection, the optimization of the methodology in terms of processing time, precision and completeness. The procedure can certainly be more reliable considering the usage of the hyperspectral sensor technique as future implementation

    Reliability of the geometric calibration of an hyperspectral frame camera

    One of the main tools for high resolution remote sensing and photogrammetry is the lightweight hyperspectral frame camera, that is used in several application areas such as precision agriculture, forestry, and environmental monitoring. Among these types of sensors, the Rikola (which is based on a Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) and produced by Senop) is one of the latest innovations. Due to its internal geometry, there are several issues to be addressed for the appropriate definition and estimation of the inner orientation parameters (IOPs). The main problems concern the possibility to change every time the sequence of the bands and to assess the reliability of the IOPs. This work focuses the attention on the assessment of the IOPs definition for each sensor, considering the impact of environmental conditions (e.g., different time, exposure, brightness) and different configurations of the FPI camera, in order to rebuild an undistorted hypercube for image processing and object estimation. The aim of this work is to understand if the IOPs are stable over the time and if and which bands can be used as reference for the calculation of the inner parameters for each sensor, considering different environmental configurations and surveys, from terrestrial to aerial applications. Preliminary performed tests showed that the focal length percentage variation among the bands of different experiments is around 1%

    Molecular and clinical correlates in iron overload associated with mutations in ferroportin

    Mutations in ferroportin (Fpn) result in iron overload. We correlate the behavior of three Fpn mutants in vitro with patients' phenotypes. Patients with Fpn mutations A77D or N174I showed macrophage iron loading. In cultured cells, FpnA77D did not reach the cell surface and cells did not export iron. Fpn mutant N1741 showed plasma membrane and intracellular localization, and did not transport iron. Fpn mutation G80S was targeted to the cell surface and was transport competent, however patients showed macrophage iron. We suggest that FpnG80S represents a class of Fpn mutants whose behavior in vitro does not explain the patients' phenotype

    REGULATION OF PROSTAGLANDIN GENERATION IN CARRAGEENAN-INDUCED PLEURISY BY INDUCIBLE NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE IN KNOCKOUT MICE

    In the present study, by comparing the responses in wild-type mice (iNOSWT) and mice lacking (iNOSKO) the inducible (or type 2) nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), we investigated the correlation between endogenous nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin (PG) generation in carrageenan-induced pleurisy. The inflammatory response in iNOSKO mice was significantly reduced in respect to iNOSWT animals, as demonstrated by the exudate volume (-63%) and numbers of infiltrating cells (-62%). The levels of NOx in the pleural exudate from carrageenan-treated mice were significantly (p < 0.01) decreased in iNOSKO mice (16 ± 7.6 nmoles/mice) compared to iNOSWT animals (133 ± 9 nmoles/mice). Similarly, the amounts of PGE2 in the pleural exudates of carrageenan-treated animals were significantly (p < 0.01) lower in iNOSKO compared to iNOSWT mice (120 ± 20 pg/mice vs. 308 ± 51 pg/mice). Also the amounts of 6-keto-PGF1α produced by lungs from carrageenan-treated iNOSKO mice (1.01 ± 0.10 ng/tissue mg) were significantly (p < 0.01) reduced compared to iNOSWT carrageenan-treated mice (2.1 ± 0.09 ng/tissue mg). In conclusion our results confirm, by the use of iNOSKO mice that in carrageenan-induced pleurisy NO positively modulates PG biosynthesis

    Patterns and predictors of family environment among adolescents at high and low risk for familial bipolar disorder

    Children's perceptions are important to understanding family environment in the bipolar disorder (BD) high-risk context. Our objectives were to empirically derive patterns of offspring-perceived family environment, and to test the association of family environment with maternal or paternal BD accounting for offspring BD and demographic characteristics. Participants aged 12–21 years (266 offspring of a parent with BD, 175 offspring of a parent with no psychiatric history) were recruited in the US and Australia. We modeled family environment using latent profile analysis based on offspring reports on the Conflict Behavior Questionnaire, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, and Home Environment Interview for Children. Parent diagnoses were based on the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies and offspring diagnoses were based on the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Aged Children. Latent class regression was used to test associations of diagnosis and family environment. Two-thirds of all offspring perceived well-functioning family environment, characterized by nurturance, flexibility, and low conflict. Two ‘conflict classes’ perceived family environments low in flexibility and cohesion, with substantial separation based on high conflict with the father (High Paternal Conflict), or very high conflict and rigidity and low warmth with the mother (High Maternal Conflict). Maternal BD was associated with offspring perceiving High Maternal Conflict (OR 2.8, p = 0.025). Clinical care and psychosocial supports for mothers with BD should address family functioning, with attention to offspring perceptions of their wellbeing. More research is needed on the effect of paternal BD on offspring and family dynamics

    Claimed effects, outcome variables and methods of measurement for health claims proposed under European community regulation 1924/2006 in the framework of maintenance of skin function

    Evidence suggests a protective role for several nutrients and foods in the maintenance of skin function. Nevertheless, all the requests for authorization to use health claims under Article 13(5) in the framework of maintenance of skin function presented to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have received a negative opinion. Reasons for such failures are mainly due to an insufficient substantiation of the claimed effects, including the choice of inappropriate outcome variables (OVs) and methods of measurement (MMs). The present paper reports the results of an investigation aimed at collecting, collating and critically analyzing the information with relation to claimed effects (CEs), OVs and MMs related to skin health compliance with Regulation 1924/2006. CEs, OVs and MMs were collected from both the EFSA Guidance document and from the authorization requests of health claims under Article 13(5). The critical analysis of OVs and MMs was based on a literature review, and was aimed at defining their appropriateness (alone or in combination with others) in the context of a specific CE. The results highlight the importance of an adequate choice of OVs and MMs for an effective substantiation of the claims

    Iron balance is tightly linked to inflammation and it has been demonstrated that many proteins involved in cellular iron management are up- or down-regulated by inflammatory stimuli, ultimately leading to iron retention in the reticuloendothelial system. Ferroportin is a key player in maintenance of correct iron homeostasis, because it is the only known mammalian cellular iron exporter.     Zinc and ageing: third Zincage conference

    The importance of Zn for optimal functioning of the immune system and antioxidant stress response is well documented. Zn homeostasis influences development and function of immune cells, activity of stress-related and antioxidant proteins [metallothioneins (MT), chaperones, ApoJ, Poly(ADP-Ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and Methionione Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)], and helps to maintain genomic integrity and stability. During ageing, the intake of Zn decreases due to inadequate diet and/or intestinal malabsorption, contributing to frailty, general disability and increased incidence of age-related degenerative diseases (cancer, infections and atherosclerosis). Although many factors contributing to Zn deficiency have been identified, the biochemical markers of Zn deficiency as well as the possibility to achieve relevant health benefits through Zn supplementation in the elderly are still a matter for evaluation. Taking into account that Zn homeostasis is regulated by proteins and enzymes for which polymorphisms have been previously found to be associated with successful/unsuccessful ageing, genetic screening might be of added value in evaluating the individual response to Zn supplementation. Biochemical, immunological, dietary and genetic studies aimed at understanding the impact of Zn in healthy ageing, the effect of Zn supplementation in the elderly and finally formulating a rationale for the promotion of correct Zn supplementation were discussed at the international Zincage conference held in Ancona in January 2007

    Stemming Cancer: Functional Genomics of Cancer Stem Cells in Solid Tumors

    Cancer stem cells (CSCs) were discovered about 15 years ago in hematopoietic cancers. Subsequently, cancer stem cells were discovered in various solid tumors. Based on parallels with normal stem cells, a developmental process of cancer stem cells follows paths of organized, hierarchical structure of cells with different degrees of maturity. While some investigators have reported particular markers as identification of cancer stem cells, these markers require further research. In this review, we focus on the functional genomics of cancer stem cells. Functional genomics provides useful information on the signaling pathways which are consecutively activated or inactivated amongst those cells. This information is of particular importance for cancer research and clinical treatment in many respects. (1) Understanding of self-renewal mechanisms crucial to tumor growth. (2) Allow the identification of new, more specific marker for CSCs, and (3) pathways that are suitable as future targets for anti-cancer drugs. This is of particular importance, because today’s chemotherapy targets the proliferating cancer cells sparing the relatively slow dividing cancer stem cells. The first step on this long road therefore is to analyze genome-wide expression-profiles within the same type of cancer and then between different types of cancer, encircling those target genes and pathways, which are specific to these cells
