The star-triangle relation and 3d superconformal indices
Superconformal indices of 3d N=2 supersymmetric field theories are
investigated from the Yang-Baxter equation point of view. Solutions of the
star-triangle relation, vertex and IRF Yang-Baxter equations are expressed in
terms of the q-special functions associated with these 3d indices. For a
two-dimensional monopole-spin system on the square lattice a free energy per
spin is explicitly determined. Similar to the partition functions,
superconformal indices of 3d theories with the chiral symmetry breaking reduce
to Dirac delta functions with the support on chemical potentials of the
preserved flavor groups.Comment: 20 pages, v2: minor corrections, comments and refs. adde
Energy loss in a strongly coupled anisotropic plasma
We study the energy loss of a rotating infinitely massive quark moving, at
constant velocity, through an anisotropic strongly-coupled N=4 plasma from
holography. It is shown that, similar to the isotropic plasma, the energy loss
of the rotating quark is due to either the drag force or radiation with a
continuous crossover from drag-dominated regime to the radiation dominated
regime. We find that the anisotropy has a significant effect on the energy loss
of the heavy quark, specially in the crossover regime. We argue that the energy
loss due to radiation in anisotropic media is less than the isotropic case.
Interestingly this is similar to analogous calculations for the energy loss in
weakly coupled anisotropic plasma.Comment: 26+1 pages, 10 figures, typos fixe
3d N = 2 mirror symmetry, pq-webs and monopole superpotentials
D3 branes stretching between webs of (p,q) 5branes provide an interesting
class of 3d N=2 theories. For generic pq-webs however the low energy field
theory is not known. We use 3d mirror symmetry and Type IIB S-duality to
construct Abelian gauge theories corresponding to D3 branes ending on both
sides of a pq-web made of many coincident NS5's intersecting one D5. These
theories contain chiral monopole operators in the superpotential and enjoy a
non trivial pattern of global symmetry enhancements. In the special case of the
pq-web with one D5 and one NS5, the 3d low energy SCFT admits three dual
formulations. This triality can be applied locally inside bigger quiver gauge
theories. We prove our statements using partial mirror symmetry `a la

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories : challenges and perspectives
We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.Peer reviewe
