The replacement histone H2A.Z is variously reported
as being linked to gene expression and preventing the
spread of heterochromatin in yeast, or concentrated
at heterochromatin in mammals. To resolve this
apparent dichotomy, affinity-purified antibodies
against the N-terminal region of H2A.Z, in both a triacetylatedandnon-
acetylatedstate, areusedin native
chromatin immmuno-precipitation experiments with
mononucleosomes from three chicken cell types. The
hyperacetylated species concentrates at the 50 end of
active genes, both tissue specific and housekeeping
but is absent from inactive genes, while the
unacetylated form is absent from both active and
inactive genes. A concentration of H2A.Z is also
found at insulators under circumstances implying a
link to barrier activity but not to enhancer blocking.
Although acetylated H2A.Z is widespread throughout
the interphase genome, at mitosis its acetylation is
erased, the unmodified form remaining. Thus,
although H2A.Z may operate as an epigenetic marker
for active genes, its N-terminal acetylation does not

Structural and chemical requirements for histidine phosphorylation by the chemotaxis kinase CheA
The CheA histidine kinase initiates the signal transduction pathway of bacterial chemotaxis by autophosphorylating a conserved histidine on its phosphotransferase domain (P1). Site-directed mutations of neighboring conserved P1 residues (Glu-67, Lys-48, and His-64) show that a hydrogen-bonding network controls the reactivity of the phospho-accepting His (His-45) in Thermotoga maritima CheA. In particular, the conservative mutation E67Q dramatically reduces phospho-transfer to P1 without significantly affecting the affinity of P1 for the CheA ATP-binding domain. High resolution crystallographic studies revealed that although all mutants disrupt the hydrogen-bonding network to varying degrees, none affect the conformation of His-45. N-15-NMR chemical shift studies instead showed that Glu-67 functions to stabilize the unfavored (NH)-H-delta 1 tautomer of His-45, thereby rendering the N-epsilon 2 imidazole unprotonated and well positioned for accepting the ATP phosphoryl group
Magellan/M2FS Spectroscopy of Galaxy Clusters: Stellar Population Model and Application to Abell 267
We report the results of a pilot program to use the Magellan/M2FS
spectrograph to survey the galactic populations and internal kinematics of
galaxy clusters. For this initial study, we present spectroscopic measurements
for quiescent galaxies observed along the line of sight to the galaxy
cluster Abell 267 (). We develop a Bayesian method for modeling the
integrated light from each galaxy as a simple stellar population, with free
parameters that specify redshift () and characteristic age,
metallicity (), alpha-abundance (), and
internal velocity dispersion () for individual galaxies.
Parameter estimates derived from our 1.5-hour observation of A267 have median
random errors of ,
, $\sigma_{\mathrm{[Fe/H]}}=0.11\
\mathrm{dex}\sigma_{[\alpha/\mathrm{Fe}]}=0.07\ \mathrm{dex}\sigma_{\sigma_\mathrm{int}}=20\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. In a companion paper,

NGC 1866: First Spectroscopic Detection of Fast Rotating Stars in a Young LMC Cluster
High-resolution spectroscopic observations were taken of 29 extended main
sequence turn-off (eMSTO) stars in the young (200 Myr) LMC cluster, NGC
1866 using the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System and MSpec spectrograph on the
Magellan-Clay 6.5-m telescope. These spectra reveal the first direct detection
of rapidly rotating stars whose presence has only been inferred from
photometric studies. The eMSTO stars exhibit H-alpha emission (indicative of
Be-star decretion disks), others have shallow broad H-alpha absorption
(consistent with rotation 150 km s), or deep H-alpha core
absorption signaling lower rotation velocities (150 km s ).
The spectra appear consistent with two populations of stars - one rapidly
