    A plain linear rule for fatigue analysis under natural loading considering the coupled fatigue and corrosion effect

    Fatigue under variable amplitude loading is currently assessed by applying the Palmgren-Miner linear rule in structural standards. However, this linear rule is inadequate in natural scenarios with coupled fatigue and corrosion effects, because the coupled corrosion-fatigue process synergistically accelerates deterioration. In view of the absence of specifications for the coupled fatigue-corrosion effect in structural standards, the objective here is to develop a simple and practical correction factor that will ensure a conservative linear summation of damage, taking the corrosion-fatigue effect into account. The theoretical consistency and the feasibility of the new adapted rule are tested in a case study

    Genetic mapping of paternal sorting of mitochondria in cucumber

    Mitochondria are organelles that have their own DNA; serve as the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells; play important roles in stress responses, programmed cell death, and ageing; and in the vast majority of eukaryotes, are maternally transmitted. Strict maternal transmission of mitochondria makes it difficult to select for better-performing mitochondria, or against deleterious mutations in the mitochondrial DNA. Cucumber is a useful plant for organellar genetics because its mitochondria are paternally transmitted and it possesses one of the largest mitochondrial genomes among all eukaryotes. Recombination among repetitive motifs in the cucumber mitochondrial DNA produces rearrangements associated with strongly mosaic (MSC) phenotypes. We previously reported nuclear control of sorting among paternally transmitted mitochondrial DNAs. The goal of this project was to map paternal sorting of mitochondria as a step towards its eventual cloning. We crossed single plants from plant introduction (PI) 401734 and Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii and produced an F2 family. A total of 425 F2 plants were genotyped for molecular markers and testcrossed as the female with MSC16. Testcross families were scored for frequencies of wild-type versus MSC progenies. Discrete segregations for percent wild-type progenies were not observed and paternal sorting of mitochondria was therefore analyzed as a quantitative trait. A major quantitative trait locus (QTL; LOD \u3e23) was mapped between two simple sequence repeats encompassing a 459-kb region on chromosome 3. Nuclear genes previously shown to affect the prevalence of mitochondrial DNAs (MSH1, OSB1, and RECA homologs) were not located near this major QTL on chromosome 3. Sequencing of this region from PI 401734, together with improved annotation of the cucumber genome, should result in the eventual cloning of paternal sorting of mitochondria and provide insights about nuclear control of organellar-DNA sorting

    A submillimeter search for pre- and proto-brown dwarfs in Chamaeleon II

    Context. Chamaeleon II molecular cloud is an active star forming region that offers an excellent opportunity for studying the formation of brown dwarfs in the southern hemisphere. Aims. Our aims are to identify a population of pre- and proto- brown dwarfs (5 sigma mass limit threshold of ~0.015 Msun) and provide information on the formation mechanisms of substellar objects. Methods. We performed high sensitivity observations at 870 microns using the LABOCA bolometer at the APEX telescope towards an active star forming region in Chamaeleon II. The data are complemented with an extensive multiwavelength catalogue of sources from the optical to the far-infrared to study the nature of the LABOCA detections. Results. We detect fifteen cores at 870 microns, and eleven of them show masses in the substellar regime. The most intense objects in the surveyed field correspond to the submillimeter counterparts of the well known young stellar objects DK Cha and IRAS 12500-7658. We identify a possible proto-brown dwarf candidate (ChaII-APEX-L) with IRAC emission at 3.6 and 4.5 microns. Conclusions. Our analysis indicates that most of the spatially resolved cores are transient, and that the point-like starless cores in the sub-stellar regime (with masses between 0.016 Msun and 0.066 Msun) could be pre-brown dwarfs cores gravitationally unstable if they have radii smaller than 220 AU to 907 AU (1.2" to 5" at 178 pc) respectively for different masses. ALMA observations will be the key to reveal the energetic state of these pre-brown dwarfs candidates.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Bonding strength of stainless steel rebars in concretes exposed to marine environments

    Many studies have corroborated the use of Stainless Steel Reinforcements (SSR) for structures in corrosive environments. However, even though the conditions for their employment are specified in different standards, their use is always tied to the same requirements for standard carbon steel rebars (B500SD), among which an equivalent carbon content for weldability that is inappropriate for SSR. Further studies are therefore needed to develop suitable standards that will focus on addressing not only the content, but also the technical advantages of SSR for structural engineering under specific conditions. The results of this study show improvements in the maximum bond strength behaviour of different SSRs in simulated marine environments, in comparison with B500SD, in terms of several variables: Bond index, curing time, w/c ratio, and corrosion. Specifically, the test results showed that: (a) the Bond index was not a suitable parameter for the evaluation of the bonding strength of SSR; (b) the curing time increased the bonding strength of Lean Duplex Stainless Steel (LDSS); (c) a higher w/c ratio tended to decrease bond strength, although less so in LDSS; and, (d) corrosion reduced bond strength, especially in B500SD.The tests presented in this manuscript were performed as part of the IISIS: ‘‘Investigación Integrada en Islas Sostenibles” (Integrated research in Sustainable Islands) research project, in receipt of funding from the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and the Technological Fund, part of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, through the INNPRONTA research programme.     CP Violation in \tau ->\nu\pi K_S and D->\pi K_S: The Importance of K_S-K_L Interference

    The BB-factories have measured CP asymmetries in the τπKSν\tau\to\pi K_S\nu and DKSπD\to K_S\pi modes. The KSK_S state is identified by its decay to two pions at a time that is close to the KSK_S lifetime. Within the Standard Model and many of its extensions, the asymmetries in these modes come from CP violation in K0Kˉ0K^0-\bar{K}^0 mixing. We emphasize that the interference between the amplitudes of intermediate KSK_S and KLK_L is as important as the pure KSK_S amplitude. Consequently, the measured asymmetries depend on the times over which the relevant decay rates are integrated and on features of the experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Electrochemical vs antibacterial characterization of ZrCN-Ag coatings

    Nowadays, antibacterial properties are becoming a viable feature to be introduced in biomaterials due to the possibility of modifying the materials' surface used in medical devices in a micro/nano metric scale. As a result, it is mandatory to understand the mechanisms of the antimicrobial agents currently used and their possible failures. In this work, the antibacterial activity of ZrCNAg films is studied, taking into consideration the ability of silver nanoparticles to be dissolved when embedded into a ceramic matrix. The study focuses on the silver release evaluated by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and the effect of the fluid composition on this release. The results revealed a very low silver release of the films, leading to non-antibacterial activity of such materials. The silver release was found to be dependent on the electrolyte composition.     Analysis of friction coefficient for a base steel 5 % Cr, applying variable loads of 196 N, 294 N and 392 N, and speeds of 0,18 m/sec, 0,36 m/sec and 0,54 m/sec

    The present study consists in analyzing the friction coefficient as a variable of the normal load and slip speed for 5% Cr steel, by applying the Block-on-Disk method according to ASTM D2714. The friction coefficient increases linearly 23,25 % from 0,214 to 0,266 when the load is increased from 196 N to 392 N; the same phenomenon is observed when the friction coefficient increases 47,82 % from 0,23 to 0,34 when the slip speed increases from 0,18 m/sec to 0,54 m/sec. The friction coefficient increased by 23,25 % for an increase in the load from 196 N to 392 N, which corresponds to 100 %, while an increase of the friction coefficient of 47,82 % occurred by increasing the speed from 0,18 m/sec to 0,54 m/sec which corresponds to 200 %

    Existen en la actualidad diversos métodos empleados para la detección de Dekkera/Brettanomyces con numerosas ventajas pero no exentos de inconvenientes tales como umbrales de detección, diferenciación entre células viables y muertas, carácter no preventivo, falsos positivos, tiempos de espera, evaluación insegura (por olfato humano o visual) y contaminaciones por hongos oportunistas. Con objeto de aportar soluciones a esta problemática se han combinado un medio selectivo-diferencial líquido y técnica HPLC/DAD con objeto de evaluar la “Actividad potencial hidroxicinamato descarboxilasa y vinilfenol reductasa existente en un vino”, mejorando algunos de los aspectos anteriores como la cuantificación de poblaciones pequeñas (1 ufc/50ml), trabajo con volúmenes grandes, y detección únicamente de células viables (verdaderas responsables de la formación de etilfenoles)

    Fatigue under variable amplitude loading is currently assessed with the Palmgren-Miner rule in structural standards, ignoring the order of loading, which would require non-linear or mixed rules, especially for the random loading sequences applied to certain structures. Therefore, the goal is to develop a practical and simple correction factor ensuring the linear summation of damage is conservative, so as to take the sequence effect into account in random loading from natural sources. The theoretical consistency of this approach is demonstrated and a case study is developed to test the feasibility of the new rule and its simplicity
