    Magnetism of 3d transition metal atoms on W(001): submonolayer films

    We have investigated random submonolayer films of 3d transition metals on W(001). The tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method combined with the coherent potential approximation was employed to calculate the electronic structure of the films. We have estimated local magnetic moments and the stability of different magnetic structures, namely the ferromagnetic order, the disordered local moments and the non-magnetic state, by comparing the total energies of the corresponding systems. It has been found that the magnetic moments of V and Cr decrease and eventually disappear with decreasing coverage. On the other hand, Fe retains approximately the same magnetic moment throughout the whole concentration range from a single impurity to the monolayer coverage. Mn is an intermediate case between Cr and Fe since it is non-magnetic at very low coverages and ferromagnetic otherwise.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures in 6 files; presented at ICN&T 2006, Basel, Switzerlan

    C/O white dwarfs of very low mass: 0.33-0.5 Mo

    The standard lower limit for the mass of white dwarfs (WDs) with a C/O core is roughly 0.5 Mo. In the present work we investigated the possibility to form C/O WDs with mass as low as 0.33 Mo.     Magnetic fluctuations in 2D metals close to the Stoner instability

    We consider the effect of potential disorder on magnetic properties of a two-dimensional metallic system (with conductance g1g\gg 1) when interaction in the triplet channel is so strong that the system is close to the threshold of the Stoner instability. We show, that under these conditions there is an exponentially small probability for the system to form local spin droplets which are local regions with non zero spin density. Using a non-local version of the optimal fluctuation method we find analytically the probability distribution and the typical spin of a local spin droplet (LSD). In particular, we show that both the probability to form a LSD and its typical spin are independent of the size of the droplet (within the exponential accuracy). The LSDs manifest themselves in temperature dependence of observable quantities. We show, that below certain cross-over temperature the paramagnetic susceptibility acquires the Curie-like temperature dependence, while the dephasing time (extracted from magneto-resistance measurements) saturates.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Dynamic Simulation Methods for Evaluating Motor Vehicle and Roadway Design and Resolving Policy Issues

    This study had three objectives: (1) to develop a comprehensive truck simulation that executes rapidly, has a modular program construction to allow variation of vehicle characteristics, and is able to realistically predict vehicle motion and the tire-road surface interaction forces; (2) to develop a model of doweled portland cement concrete pavement that can be used to determine slab deflection and stress at predetermined nodes, and that allows for the variation of traditional thickness design factors; and (3) to implement these two models on a work station with suitable menu driven modules so that both existing and proposed pavements can be evaluated with respect to design life, given specific characteristics of the heavy vehicles that will be using the facility. This report summarizes the work that has been performed during the first year of the study. Briefly, the following has been accomplished: A two dimensional model of a typical 3-S2 tractor-trailer combination was created. A finite element structural analysis program, ANSYS, was used to model the pavement. Computer runs have been performed varying the parameters defining both vehicle and road elements. The resulting time specific displacements for each node are plotted, and the displacement basin is generated for defined vehicles. Relative damage to the pavement can then be estimated. A damage function resulting from load replications must be assumed that will be reflected by further pavement deterioration. Comparison with actual damage on Interstate 80 will eventually allow verification of these procedures

    Thermally activated escape rates of uniaxial spin systems with transverse field

    Classical escape rates of uniaxial spin systems are characterized by a prefactor differing from and much smaller than that of the particle problem, since the maximum of the spin energy is attained everywhere on the line of constant latitude: theta=const, 0 =< phi =< 2*pi. If a transverse field is applied, a saddle point of the energy is formed, and high, moderate, and low damping regimes (similar to those for particles) appear. Here we present the first analytical and numerical study of crossovers between the uniaxial and other regimes for spin systems. It is shown that there is one HD-Uniaxial crossover, whereas at low damping the uniaxial and LD regimes are separated by two crossovers.Comment: 4 PR pages, 3 figures, final published versio

    Role of a parallel magnetic field in two dimensional disordered clusters containing a few correlated electrons

    An ensemble of 2d disordered clusters with a few electrons is studied as a function of the Coulomb energy to kinetic energy ratio r_s. Between the Fermi system (small r_s) and the Wigner molecule (large r_s), an interaction induced delocalization of the ground state takes place which is suppressed when the spins are aligned by a parallel magnetic field. Our results confirm the existence of an intermediate regime where the Wigner antiferromagnetism defavors the Stoner ferromagnetism and where the enhancement of the Lande g factor observed in dilute electron systems is reproduced.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
