Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs, and Behaviors of Diabetes Among Afro-Caribbeans Near Brooklyn

Literature has found that some minority groups with diabetes have a negative perception of medical professionals when a health problem occurs. This trend is particularly problematic with the diabetes epidemic in the United States. African Americans are more than 2 times as likely to die from diabetes than are Whites, and diabetes prevalence has increased exponentially in New York City where a majority of Afro-Caribbeans live. To address this problem, a cross-sectional design was used to recruit Afro-Caribbeans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes across 7 churches to examine whether shared knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors about diabetes screening and its complications exist, and whether they would attend a type 2 diabetes class or workshop at their church. A 114-item questionnaire, adapted from reliable and validated national health surveys, was administered to a convenience sample of 67 participants aged 35 to 90 to collect demographic, health, and cultural belief information. The conceptual frameworks of the social ecological and cultural consensus models were used for discovery of social influences and shared knowledge of type 2 diabetes. A cultural consensus analysis of 28 eligible participants was used to infer trustworthy answers to cultural questions. Participants demonstrated an above-average knowledge of type 2 diabetes, with a level of agreement of .52 (\u27.192 SD); further, 85.2% reported that they would attend a diabetes class or workshop at their church. These findings promote social change by educating Afro-Caribbeans about diabetes, and by facilitating partnerships between churches and doctors. Future community-based research with churches could help to improve glycemic control and delay the onset of type 2 diabetes

    Get PDF
Batur Lake located in Bangli District is one of fisheries-basedregions in Bali with niletilapia as the main cultured species. Monitoring on environmental conditions of the lake was carried out to get the vertical and horizontal water quality profiles of the lake. Climatology condition of the area was also presented in the study. The study area were between 8o13’-8o18’ S and 115o22’-115o26’ E. Field survey was done with random and transect sampling points distribution. The water quality monitored in the lake essential ly covers important parameters such as depth, transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, nutrients (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate), sulfide, chlorophyll, and planktonic composition. Results of spatial analysis (vertically and horizontal ly) of water quality indicated that oxygen concentration up to 10 m deep is still appropriate for nile tilapia culture. Nutrient (phosphate, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite) contents of the lake meet the standard levels set by Ministry of Environment of Indonesia, and were still suitable for aquaculture operation at depth 710 m. From climatology point of view, it is known that the extreme climate occurred in June-August resulting in water mass changes, thus, affecting aquaculture sustainability in the lake

Development of computational and experimental methods for biomass composition and evaluation of its impact in genome-scale models prediction

The use of genome-scale metabolic models has been rapidly increasing in fields such as metabolic engineering. An important part of a metabolic model is the biomass equation since this reaction will ultimately determine the predictive capacity of the model in terms of essentiality and flux distributions. Thus, in order to obtain a reliable metabolic model the biomass precursors and their coefficients must be as precise as possible. Ideally, determination of the biomass composition would be performed experimentally, but when no experimental data are available this is established by approximation to closely related organisms. Computational methods however, can extract some information from the genome such as amino acid and nucleotide compositions. The main objectives of this study were to compare the biomass composition of several organisms and to evaluate how biomass precursor coefficients affected the predictability of several genome-scale metabolic models by comparing predictions with experimental data in literature. For that, the biomass macromolecular composition was experimentally determined and the amino acid composition was both experimentally and computationally estimated for several organisms. Sensitivity analysis studies were also performed with the Escherichia coli iAF1260 metabolic model concerning specific growth rates and flux distributions. The results obtained suggest that the macromolecular composition is conserved among related organisms. Contrasting, experimental data for amino acid composition seem to have no similarities for related organisms. It was also observed that the impact of macromolecular composition on specific growth rates and flux distributions is larger than the impact of amino acid composition, even when data from closely related organisms are used

Improving the Proactive Routing Protocol using Depth First Iterative Deepening Spanning Tree in Mobile Ad Hoc Network

Owing to the wireless and mobility nature, nodes in a mobile ad hoc network are not within the transmission range. It needs to transfer data through the multi-intermediate nodes. Opportunistic data forwarding is an assuring solution to make use of the broadcast environment of wireless communication links. Due to absence of source routing capability with efficient proactive routing protocol, it is not widely used. To rectify the problem, we proposed memory and routing efficient proactive routing protocol using Depth-First Iterative-Deepening and hello messaging scheme.  This protocol can conserve the topology information in every node in the network. In experimental analysis and discussion, we implemented the proposed work using NS2 simulator tool and proved that the proposed technique is performed well in terms of average delay, buffer and throughput

Film and comic are visual narrative media which emphasize visual elements in delivering its message towards its audiences. Although both media emphasize similar elements, but in comic adaptation movies, there are several changes in visual narrative structure. The research object, Scott Pilgrim VS The World is analyzed through structural adaptation analysis in order to understand the specific aspects of structural changes. The changes are analyzed especially from four elements of visual narrative aspects from both media, which are narration, layout, image, and sound. The overall adaptation processes in Scott Pilgrim VS The World are emphasized in pictorial sequence changes which heavily influenced other visual structure elements. The visual sequence compression in adapting the story from comic to movie while maintaining the story essence is the fundamental adaptation process
