Interconnections between Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Content Knowledge of a University Lecturer in Linear Algebra
The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the practice of a lecturer in linear
algebra by exploring the connections he makes between his content knowledge and his pedagogical
content knowledge while working on the topic of matrices. Data were collected through video
recordings of his classes and semi-structured interviews, and were analysed with the Mathematics
Teacher’s Specialised Knowledge model. Instances of classroom performance, supported by the
teacher’s own affirmations, provided evidence relating to the categories comprising the model, and
enabled us to establish connections between the lecturer’s knowledge, his understanding of his
students’ learning capabilities, and his knowledge of teaching mathematics, which together account
for his classroom practice: the use of varied examples to introduce new content, the highlighting of
the most salient aspects of the topic, and alerts about potential errors and difficulties. The contribution
that these results could make to the training of university teachers, which would be done with the
knowledge of the areas of difficulty shown by the teacher in mind, could be used to deepen other
elements of their pedagogical content knowledge. The interconnections between areas of knowledge
identified by the study also serve to validate the usefulness of a theoretical model for studying

Adsorptive Behavior of an Activated Carbon for Bisphenol A Removal in Single and Binary (Bisphenol A—Heavy Metal) Solutions
Authors thank M.I. Bautista-Toledo for the activated carbon donation.Bisphenol A (BPA) is an extensively produced and consumed chemical in the world. Due to its widespread use, contamination by this pollutant has increased in recent years, reaching a critical environmental point. This work investigates the feasibility of bisphenol A adsorption from industrial wastewater solutions, testing the reduction of bisphenol A in synthetic solutions by a commercial activated carbon, AC-40, in batch mode. Besides, mixtures of bisphenol A and different heavy metal cations were also studied. So far, no works have reported a complete study about bisphenol A removal by this activated carbon including the use of this material to remove BPA in the presence of metal cations. First, adsorption experiments were performed in batch changing pH, dose of adsorbent, initial bisphenol A concentration and contact time. Results showed greater retention of bisphenol A by increasing the acidity of the medium. Further, the percentage of bisphenol A adsorbed increased with increasing contact time. The selected conditions for the rest of the experiments were pH 5 and a contact time of 48 h. In addition, an increase in retention of bisphenol A when the dose of adsorbent increased was observed. Then, specific experiments were carried out to define the kinetics and the adsorption isotherm. Equilibrium data were adequately fitted to a Langmuir isotherm and the kinetics data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity provided by Langmuir model was 94.34 mg/g. Finally, the effect of the presence of other heavy metals in water solution on the adsorption of bisphenol A was analyzed. Binary tests revealed competition between the adsorbates and a significant selectivity toward bisphenol A. Finally, the study of the adsorption performance in three consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles showed efficiencies higher than 90% in all cycles, indicating that the activated carbon has good reusability
Wet and dry African dust episodes over eastern Spain
The impact of the African dust on levels of atmospheric suspended particulate matter (SPM) and on wet deposition was evaluated in eastern Iberia for the period 1996-2002. An effort was made to compile both the SPM and wet episodes. To this end, the time series of levels of TSP and PM10 in Levantine air quality monitoring stations were evaluated and complemented with the computation of back trajectories, satellite images, and meteorological analysis. Wet deposition frequency was obtained from weekly collected precipitation data at a rural background station in which the African chemical signature was identified (mainly pH and Ca2+ concentrations). A number of African dust episodes (112) were identified (16 episodes per year). In 93 out of the 112 (13 episodes per year) the African dust influence caused high SPM levels. In 49 out of 112 (7 episodes per year), wet deposition was detected, and the chemistry was influenced by dust. There is a clear seasonal trend with higher frequency of dust outbreaks in May-August, with second modes in March and October. Wet events followed a different pattern, with a marked maximum in May. Except for one event, December was devoid of African air mass intrusions. On the basis of seasonal meteorological patterns affecting the Iberian Peninsula, an interpretation of the meteorological scenarios causing African dust transport over Iberia was carried out. Four scenarios were identified with a clear seasonal trend. The impact of the different dust outbreak scenarios on the levels of PM10 recorded at a rural site (Monagrega, Teruel, Spain) in the period 1996-2002 was also evaluated
Reversible mechanical induction of optical activity in solutions of soft-matter nanophases
Nanophases of J-aggregates of several achiral amphiphilic porphyrins, which have thin long acicular shapes (nanoribbons), show the immediate and reversible formation of a stationary mechano-chiral state in the solution by vortex stirring, as detected by their circular dichroic signals measured by 2-modulator generallized ellipsometry. The results suggest that when a macroscopic chiral force creates supramolecular chirality, it also creates an enantiomeric excess of screw distortions, which may be detected by their excitonic absorption. An explanation on the effect of the shear flow gradients is proposed on the basis of the orientation of the rotating particles in the vortex and the size, shape, and mechanical properties of the nanoparticles
On the mechano-chiral effect of vortical flows on the dichroic spectra of 5-phenyl-10,15,20-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin J-aggregates
Phase-modulated ellipsometry of the J-aggregates of the title porphyrin shows that the material gives a true CD signal. This confirms that there is a real chiral transfer by mechanical forces, mediated by shear gradient flows, from the macroscopic to the electronic transition level. Dislocations in the structure of the aggregate could justify the formation of chirality at the level of the electronic transitions once the mesophases can be sculptured by hydrodynamic gradient flows

Durante la realización del proyecto del IGME ·Potencial Básico de Granitos y Neises Ornamentales en Castilla y León se desarrolló una metodología sistemática de investigación de granitos para uso ornamental que, por su versatilidad, puede hacerse extensible, en sus aspectos más generales, a otros tipos de rocas ornamentales e, incluso, rocas industriales en general. Para ello, se desarrollan una serle de fases de trabajo que comprenden: recogida de información, exploración de campo a escalas 1 :50.000, 1 :25.000 y 1: 10.000, valoración de áreas y elección de puntos canterables, todo ello mediante la cuantificación de todos los parámetros y valores que han de tenerse en cuenta en la investigación de rocas ornamentales, que nos permiten dar un tratamiento objetivo a todas las áreas estudiadas
Experimental verification of memristor-based material implication NAND operation
Memristors are being considered as promising devices for highly dense memory systems as well as the potential basis of new computational paradigms. In this scenario, and in relation with data processing, one of the more specific and differential logic functions is the material implication logic also named as IMPLY logic. Many papers have been published in this framework but few of them are related with experimental works using real memristor devices. In the paper authors show the verification of the IMPLY function by using Ni/HfO2/Si manufactured devices and laboratory measurements. The proper behavior of the IMPLY structure (2 memristors) has been shown. The paper also verifies the proper operation of a two-step IMPLY-based NAND gate implementation, showing the electrical behavior of the circuit in a cycling operation. A new procedure to implement a NAND gate that requires only one step is experimentally shown as well
Structure vs. properties chirality, optics and shapes in amphiphilic porphyrin J-aggregates
The structure of the meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS4) J-aggregates could be determined by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. A sheet-like architecture reveals the relationship between structure and chirality, optics and shapes of the J-aggregate of the meso 4-sulfonatophenyl- and phenyl- substituted porphyrins. The structure of the J-aggregates of H4TPPS4 belongs to the chiral space group P21 and includes four porphyrin molecules in its unit cell. The intermolecular stabilization of the zwitterionic units by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between the positively charged central NH groups and the periphery anionic sulfonato groups results in a structure of porphyrins sheets along the [ ] plane direction. The structure of the sheet on the [ ] plane is already chiral and its molecular architecture explains the simultaneous presence of H- and J-aggregate bands in their absorption spectra. This structure also accounts for the high similarity observed between the absorption spectra of different mesophorms of the same substance and even between different members of the series of meso-4-sulfonatophenyl-and-aryl substituted diprotonated porphyrins. The possibility, or not, of the sheet-like structure on [ ] to interact with other layers, either through ionic or hydrophobic interactions, depends on the substitution pattern at the meso-positions of the porphyrin ring. Thus, the different morphologies of the particles [mono- bi- and multilayered] of this series of J-aggregates are explained taking into account the role that the fourth meso-subtituent plays in the interlayer stabilization. The results suggest that supramolecular helicity, previously detected in several J-aggregates, is not the explanation of their chirality but would be the expression of the intrinsic chirality of the packing between building blocks
El proyecto mapa escolar de Valencia: Análisis de la zonificación educativa de la ciudad de Valencia
The research project Mapa Escolar de Valencia (School Map of Valencia) was born out of an agreement between the City Council and the University of Valencia in order to carry out an investigation of the compulsory education system of the city and propose, if necessary, modifications to the current school zoning. The project is structured in several research areas. An analysis of the specialized scientific literature and public policies concerning education and schooling has been done, and it is currently analysing the evolution of quantitative and qualitative data on compulsory schooling in Valencia, its school zoning, the representations of education and the school climate in the city schools.
