WHAT MOTIVATES PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS TO BECOME TEACHERS AND THEIR PERSPECTIVES OF ENGLISH TEACHING AS A CAREER OPTION

    Get PDF
Teaching motivation issues are well-researched in several countries. However, these issues have been rarely investigated in the Indonesian context. This study investigated motivational factors that influence pre-service teachers to enter English teacher training and their perspectives of English teaching as a career option. It comprised a survey of 140 pre-service teachers from a teacher training institution in Bali and two semi-structured group interviews. The results suggest that the participants are more influenced by intrinsic and altruistic factors than extrinsic factors. These findings contradict earlier studies of teacher motivation in developing countries and what is generally believed in Indonesia. Moreover, the development of the tourism industry in Bali seems to have a great impact on the participants’ perspectives of English teaching in Bali in particular and in Indonesia in general. Most of those surveyed held positive views of the development of English teaching as a career option. Finally the study suggested implications and recommendations for additional studies within the Indonesian context.Â

This paper describes the result of student self-reflection on their writing ability and the application of the process writing approach conducted in their academic writing class. The data was collected through a self-reflection written by the participants. The students were guided to reflect on their learning experience in two aspects: their views on their writing ability and the application of the process writing approach in the classroom. Forty-four students of the English literature program from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University, were chosen as the participants for this study through a purposive sampling method. This method was ideal because these students have undergone similar learning experiences within the same context, which provided rich data for the study. The result of their self-reflection was analysed using a qualitative approach. The findings indicate that more than half of the participants perceived their writing ability as lacking. Less than 10% of the participants were confident in their writing ability, and the rest saw improvement in their ability but required further practice and guidance. In terms of the application of process writing, the majority of participants agreed that it had a positive impact on their writing process

Coordinated regulation of the ESCRT-III component CHMP4C by the chromosomal passenger complex and centralspindlin during cytokinesis

The chromosomal passenger complex (CPC)-composed of Aurora B kinase, Borealin, Survivin and INCENP-surveys the fidelity of genome segregation throughout cell division. The CPC has been proposed to prevent polyploidy by controlling the final separation (known as abscission) of the two daughter cells via regulation of the ESCRT-III CHMP4C component. The molecular details are, however, still unclear. Using atomic force microscopy, we show that CHMP4C binds to and remodels membranes in vitro\textit{in vitro}. Borealin prevents the association of CHMP4C with membranes, whereas Aurora B interferes with CHMP4C's membrane remodelling activity. Moreover, we show that CHMP4C phosphorylation is not required for its assembly into spiral filaments at the abscission site and that two distinctly localized pools of phosphorylated CHMP4C exist during cytokinesis. We also characterized the CHMP4C interactome in telophase cells and show that the centralspindlin complex associates preferentially with unphosphorylated CHMP4C in cytokinesis. Our findings indicate that gradual dephosphorylation of CHMP4C triggers a 'relay' mechanism between the CPC and centralspindlin that regulates the timely distribution and activation of CHMP4C for the execution of abscission. This work was supported by Cancer Research UK grant no. Linee guida per la valutazione della resilienza delle foreste Mediterranee ai cambiamenti climatici [Guidelines for assessing the resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change]

    Get PDF
We have defined optimal management models for improving or strengthening the resilience of forest environments: in particular, five best management practices aiming at improving the Mediterranean forests resilience with reference to the desertification risk. The 5 Best ManagementPractices are: BMP1 - Actions favoring mixing of species and hydrogeological stability of forests; BMP2 - Renaturalization of forest plantations; BMP3 - Remedial measures and restoration of degraded forests; BMP4 - Actions aimed at enhancing complex structural forests; BMP5 - Actions favoring connectivity in agro-forestry systems. The best management practices have been then applied adapting them to 16 different intervention types and they have been tested on 10 regional forest categories on an overall surface of 120 hectares. The intervention areas make up a set of testing areas according to the different intervention types carried out. Finally, we have defined the forest resilience Assessment Chart. The Chart has been worked out to improve the sylviculturist\u2019s intervention assessment in order to grant a proper application of the forest resilience intervention practices. This chart includes 10 questions on parameters having an influence on the resilience and on the forest adaptation capacity to climate changes. The parameters are: current and dynamic Forest Category; Specific tree Composition; Vegetation Layers covering; Forest vertical structure; Forest horizontal structure; Dendrometric parameters; Species indicating disturbance; Ground cover; Regeneration; Internal and external steadiness

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be harvested from different sites in the oral cavity, representing a reservoir of cells useful for regenerative purposes. As direct comparisons between at least two types of MSCs deriving from the same patient are surprisingly rare in scientific literature, we isolated and investigated the osteoinductive potential of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and buccal fat pad stem cells (BFPSCs). MSCs were isolated from the third molar dental pulp and buccal fat pads of 12 patients. The number of viable cells was quantified through manual count. Proliferation and osteodifferentiation assays, flow cytometry analysis of cell phenotypes, and osteocalcin release in vitro were performed. The isolation of BFPSCs and DPSCs was successful in 7 out of 12 (58%) and 3 out of 12 (25%) of retrieved samples, respectively. The yield of cells expressing typical stem cell markers and the level of proliferation were higher in BFPSCs than in DPSCs. Both BFP-SCs and DPSCs differentiated into osteoblast-like cells and were able to release a mineralized matrix. The release of osteocalcin, albeit greater for BFPSCs, did not show any significant difference between BFPSCs and DPSCs. The yield of MSCs depends on their site of origin as well as on the protocol adopted for their isolation. Our data show that BFP is a valuable source for the derivation of MSCs that can be used for regenerative treatments
