We comment on the recent claim for the experimental observation of
neutrinoless double-beta decay. We discuss several limitations in the analysis
provided in that paper and conclude that there is no basis for the presented

Hobsonâs choice? Constraints on accessing spaces of creative production
Successful creative production is often documented to occur in urban areas that are more likely to be diverse, a source of human capital and the site of dense interactions. These accounts chart how, historically, creative industries have clustered in areas where space was once cheap in the city centre fringe and inner city areas, often leading to the development of a creative milieu, and thereby stimulating further creative production. Historical accounts of the development of creative areas demonstrate the crucial role of accessible low-cost business premises. This article reports on the findings of a case study that investigated the location decisions of firms in selected creative industry sectors in Greater Manchester. The study found that, while creative activity remains highly concentrated in the city centre, creative space there is being squeezed and some creative production is decentralizing in order to access cheaper premises. The article argues that the location choices of creative industry firms are being constrained by the extensive city centre regeneration, with the most vulnerable firms, notably the smallest and youngest, facing a Hobsonâs choice of being able to access low-cost premises only in the periphery. This disrupts the delicate balance needed to sustain production and begs the broader question as to how the creative economy fits into the existing urban fabric, alongside the competing demands placed on space within a transforming industrial conurbation
Techno-economic assessment of two novel feeding systems for a dry-feed gasifier in an IGCC plant with Pd-membranes for CO2 capture
This study focuses on the application of Pd-based membranes for CO[subscript 2] capture in coal fueled power plants. In particular, membranes are applied to Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle with two innovative feeding systems. In the first feeding system investigated, CO[subscript 2] is used both as fuel carrier and back-flushing gas for the candle filters, while in the second case N[subscript 2] is the fuel carrier, and CO[subscript 2] the back-flushing gas. The latter is investigated because current dry feed technology vents about half of the fuel carrier, which is detrimental for the CO[subscript 2] avoidance in the CO[subscript 2] case. The hydrogen separation is performed in membrane modules arranged in series; consistently with the IGCC plant layout, most of the hydrogen is separated at the pressure required to fuel the gas turbine. Furthermore, about 10% of the overall hydrogen permeated is separated at ambient pressure and used to post-fire the heat recovery steam generator. This layout significantly reduces membrane surface area while keeping low efficiency penalties.
The resulting net electric efficiency is higher for both feeding systems, about 39%, compared to 36% of the reference Selexol-based capture plant. The CO[subscript 2] avoidance depends on the type of feeding system adopted, and its amount of vented gas; it ranges from 60% to 98%. From the economic point of view, membrane costs are significant and shares about 20% of the overall plant cost. This leads in the more optimistic case to a CO[subscript 2] avoidance cost of 35 âŹ/t[subscript CO2], which is slightly lower than the reference case.Seventh Framework Programme (European Commission) (Grant agreement no. 241342
Impact of the 2015 wildfires on Malaysian air quality and exposure: a comparative study of observed and modeled data
In September and October 2015, Equatorial Asia experienced the most intense biomass burning episodes over the past two decades. These events, mostly enhanced by the extremely dry weather associated with the occurrence of strong El Niño conditions, resulted in the transnational transport of hazardous pollutants from the originating sources in Indonesian Borneo and Sumatra to the highly populated Malaysian Peninsula. Quantifying the population exposure form this event is a major challenge, and only two model-based studies have been performed to date, with limited evaluation against measurements. This manuscript presents a new data set of 49 monitoring stations across Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo active during the 2015 haze event, and performs the first comparative study of PM10 (particulate matter with diameter < 10 ”m) and carbon monoxide (CO) against the output of a state-of-the-art regional model (WRF-Chem). WRF-Chem presents high skills in describing the spatio-temporal patterns of both PM10 and CO and thus was applied to estimate the impact of the 2015 wildfires on population exposure. This study showed that more than 60% of the population living in the highly populated region of the Greater Klang Valley was systematically exposed to unhealthy/hazardous air quality conditions associated with the increased pollutant concentrations from wildfires and that almost 40% of the Malaysian population was on average exposed to PM10 concentrations higher than 100 ”g mâ3 during September and October 2015
Challenges and opportunities in resuming spirometry services in England post-pandemic with potential to adopt Artificial Intelligence decision support software: a qualitative study
Background: Spirometry services to diagnose and monitor lung disease in primary care are restarting post-pandemic in England, identified as a priority in the NHS Long Term Plan, however evidence regarding best practice is limited.Aims: To explore perspectives on spirometry provision in primary care, and the potential for Artificial Intelligence (AI) decision support software to aid quality and interpretation.Design and Setting: Semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in spirometry services in primary care.Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders in spirometry services across England. Participants were recruited by snowball sampling. Interviews explored the pre-pandemic delivery of spirometry, restarting of services and perceptions of the role of AI. Transcripts were analysed thematically.Results: 28 participants (mean [SD], 21.6 [9.4, range 3-40] yearsâ clinical experience) were interviewed between April and June 2022. Participants included clinicians (n=25) and commissioners (n=3); eight held regional and/or national respiratory network advisory roles. Four themes were identified: 1) Historical challenges in spirometry provision; 2) Inequity in post-pandemic spirometry provision and challenges to restarting spirometry in primary care; 3) Future delivery closer to patientsâ homes by appropriately trained staff; 4) The potential for AI to have supportive roles in spirometry.Conclusion: Stakeholders highlighted historic challenges and the damaging effects of the pandemic contributing to inequity in provision of spirometry, which must be addressed. Overall stakeholders were positive about the potential of AI to support clinicians in quality assessment and interpretation of spirometry. However, it was evident that validation of the software must be sufficiently robust for clinicians and healthcare commissioners to have trust in the process
Multi-layer scintillation detector for the MOON double beta decay experiment: Scintillation photon responses studied by a prototype detector MOON-1
An ensemble of multi-layer scintillators is discussed as an option of the
high-sensitivity detector Mo Observatory Of Neutrinos (MOON) for spectroscopic
measurements of neutrino-less double beta decays. A prototype detector MOON-1,
which consists of 6 layer plastic-scintillator plates, was built to study the
sensitivity of the MOON-type detector. The scintillation photon collection and
the energy resolution, which are key elements for the high-sensitivity
experiments, are found to be 1835+/-30 photo-electrons for 976 keV electrons
and sigma = 2.9+/-0.1% (dE/E = 6.8+/-0.3 % in FWHM) at the Qbb ~ 3 MeV region,
respectively. The multi-layer plastic-scintillator structure with good energy
resolution as well as good background suppression of beta-gamma rays is crucial
for the MOON-type detector to achieve the inverted hierarchy neutrino mass

Comparing performance of primary care clinicians in the interpretation of SPIROmetry with or without Artificial Intelligence Decision support software (SPIRO-AID): a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.
INTRODUCTION: Spirometry is a point-of-care lung function test that helps support the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic lung disease. The quality and interpretation accuracy of spirometry is variable in primary care. This study aims to evaluate whether artificial intelligence (AI) decision support software improves the performance of primary care clinicians in the interpretation of spirometry, against reference standard (expert interpretation). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A parallel, two-group, statistician-blinded, randomised controlled trial of primary care clinicians in the UK, who refer for, or interpret, spirometry. People with specialist training in respiratory medicine to consultant level were excluded. A minimum target of 228 primary care clinician participants will be randomised with a 1:1 allocation to assess fifty de-identified, real-world patient spirometry sessions through an online platform either with (intervention group) or without (control group) AI decision support software report. Outcomes will cover primary care clinicians' spirometry interpretation performance including measures of technical quality assessment, spirometry pattern recognition and diagnostic prediction, compared with reference standard. Clinicians' self-rated confidence in spirometry interpretation will also be evaluated. The primary outcome is the proportion of the 50 spirometry sessions where the participant's preferred diagnosis matches the reference diagnosis. Unpaired t-tests and analysis of covariance will be used to estimate the difference in primary outcome between intervention and control groups. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study has been reviewed and given favourable opinion by Health Research Authority Wales (reference: 22/HRA/5023). Results will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presented at relevant national and international conferences, disseminated through social media, patient and public routes and directly shared with stakeholders.
