    Future Elementary School Teachers' Conceptual Change Concerning Photosynthesis

    The purpose of this study was to examine conceptual change among future elementary school teachers while studying a scientific text concerning photosynthesis. Students' learning goals in relation to their learning outcomes were also examined. The participants were future elementary school teachers. The design consisted of pre- and post-tests. The study revealed that student teachers have severe misconceptions concerning photosynthesis. However, the results indicated that a coherent expository text works as an effective support in the learning process. Further, results showed that students who express high-level learning goals are more likely to undergo conceptual change than students with low-level learning goals. The study highlights the importance of science education in teacher training at universities.</p

    Ultra-thin free-standing single crystalline silicon membranes with strain control

    We report on fabrication and characterization of ultra-thin suspended single crystalline flat silicon membranes with thickness down to 6 nm. We have developed a method to control the strain in the membranes by adding a strain compensating frame on the silicon membrane perimeter to avoid buckling after the release. We show that by changing the properties of the frame the strain of the membrane can be tuned in controlled manner. Consequently, both the mechanical properties and the band structure can be engineered, and the resulting membranes provide a unique laboratory to study low-dimensional electronic, photonic, and phononic phenomena.Peer reviewe

    InAsP/AlGaInP/GaAs QD laser operating at ∼770 nm

    We present a study of metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy of ternary InAsP quantum dots in AlGaInP/GaAs for application in laser diodes. The properties of InAsP QD laser structures were compared with reference samples containing binary InP QDs. Based on X-ray diffraction, the molar fraction of arsenic in InAsP QDs was estimated to be ~25%. Room temperature liquid contact electro-luminescence measurements revealed a long wavelength shift of the InAsP QD emission to ~775 nm as compared with the InP QD emission at 716 nm and an increased full width at half maximum of the spontaneous emission (71 meV vs 50 meV). As cleaved, 4 mm long and 50 µm wide InAsP QD lasers operated in a pulsed regime at room temperature at ~770 nm with a threshold current density of 155 A/cm and a maximum output optical power of at least 200 mW. The maximum operation temperature was at least 380 K

    Relativistic Calculation of two-Electron one-Photon and Hypersatellite Transition Energies for 12Z3012\leq Z\leq30 Elements

    Energies of two-electron one-photon transitions from initial double K-hole states were computed using the Dirac-Fock model. The transition energies of competing processes, the Kα\alpha hypersatellites, were also computed.     Equilibrium shapes and energies of coherent strained InP islands

    The equilibrium shapes and energies of coherent strained InP islands grown on GaP have been investigated with a hybrid approach that has been previously applied to InAs islands on GaAs. This combines calculations of the surface energies by density functional theory and the bulk deformation energies by continuum elasticity theory. The calculated equilibrium shapes for different chemical environments exhibit the {101}, {111}, {\=1\=1\=1} facets and a (001) top surface. They compare quite well with recent atomic-force microscopy data. Thus in the InP/GaInP-system a considerable equilibration of the individual islands with respect to their shapes can be achieved. We discuss the implications of our results for the Ostwald ripening of the coherent InP islands.     Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of the Procedure-specific Risks of Thrombosis and Bleeding in General Abdominal, Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal, and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery

All rights reserved.Objective: To provide procedure-specific estimates of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) and major bleeding after abdominal surgery. Background: The use of pharmacological thromboprophylaxis represents a trade-off that depends on VTE and bleeding risks that vary between procedures; their magnitude remains uncertain. Methods: We identified observational studies reporting procedure-specific risks of symptomatic VTE or major bleeding after abdominal surgery, adjusted the reported estimates for thromboprophylaxis and length of follow-up, and estimated cumulative incidence at 4 weeks postsurgery, stratified by VTE risk groups, and rated evidence certainty. Results: After eligibility screening, 285 studies (8,048,635 patients) reporting on 40 general abdominal, 36 colorectal, 15 upper gastrointestinal, and 24 hepatopancreatobiliary surgery procedures proved eligible. Evidence certainty proved generally moderate or low for VTE and low or very low for bleeding requiring reintervention. The risk of VTE varied substantially among procedures: in general abdominal surgery from a median of &lt;0.1% in laparoscopic cholecystectomy to a median of 3.7% in open small bowel resection, in colorectal from 0.3% in minimally invasive sigmoid colectomy to 10.0% in emergency open total proctocolectomy, and in upper gastrointestinal/hepatopancreatobiliary from 0.2% in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy to 6.8% in open distal pancreatectomy for cancer. Conclusions: VTE thromboprophylaxis provides net benefit through VTE reduction with a small increase in bleeding in some procedures (eg, open colectomy and open pancreaticoduodenectomy), whereas the opposite is true in others (eg, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and elective groin hernia repairs). In many procedures, thromboembolism and bleeding risks are similar, and decisions depend on individual risk prediction and values and preferences regarding VTE and bleeding

We will apply the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to rate evidence certainty.     Phonons in Slow Motion: Dispersion Relations in Ultra-Thin Si Membranes

    We report the changes in dispersion relations of hypersonic acoustic phonons in free-standing silicon membranes as thin as \sim 8 nm. We observe a reduction of the phase and group velocities of the fundamental flexural mode by more than one order of magnitude compared to bulk values. The modification of the dispersion relation in nanostructures has important consequences for noise control in nano and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) as well as opto-mechanical devices.Comment: 5 page
