Mediating Cityscapes: Cultural Analysis and The Development of Urban Places

Helsingborg, a coastal city in southern Sweden, has initiated a twenty-five yearlong re-development project called H+, aiming to convert the southern industrial harbor space into a new, livable urban neighborhood and city center. The winning plan for the H+ project, titled ‘The Tolerant City,’ is an inherently social redevelopment that requires innovative and collaborative strategies, as well as a strong focus on social sustainability, to achieve. As a cultural analyst working with the City of Helsingborg (Helsingborgs stad) and the H+ Project, my role has been to mediate information between planners and citizens, focusing the project’s visions towards existing communities and their values. This thesis develops how ethnographic research and cultural mapping engages with and revitalizes city planning to enable the development of a ‘tolerant city,’ essentially a process of place-making the southern harbor. Cultural mapping translates ethnographic data into usable maps for city planners, used here as a methodological tool in the process of developing the H+ area as a physical and non-physical place. This thesis examines the ways in which an applied cultural analytical approach engenders planning practices towards openness and inclusion through deeper understandings of the dialectic identities emerging from the relationships between people and places

Determination of Flaw Growth Characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V Sheet in the Solution-Treated and Aged Condition

The specific experimental investigation undertaken was designed to answer these questions on Ti-6Al-4V in the solution treated and aged condition. The defect growth and fracture characteristics were studied in parent (unwelded) and welded sheet material. The results of the study indicate that cryogenic proof testing will screen smaller size defects than proof testing at ambient conditions. However some unusual crack growth behavior during the proof test simulation suggests that some further study be made of stress and time duration effects

Stress Concentrations: Their Effect on Design for Repeated Loading

Changes of section, such as fillets, grooves, oil holes, keyways, and the like, are necessary in many machine parts. These are sources of stress concentration when a part is under load, Stress concentrations may also occur near bolts, pins, rivets, spot welds, and other discrete fasteners in joints of structural members. Flaws, inclu-sions, and other discontinuities in a metal may also interrupt the stress pattern under load. The general term "stress raiser" has been coined to describe any such irregularity or inhomogeneity which produces it local concentration of stress in a loaded part

The DAPP-BQ in the Netherlands: Factor structure and relationship with basic personality dimensions.

0.20 in a sample of 223 normal subjects, Cronbach's α coefficients were calculated for the remaining items in the 18 scales of this instrument. The ‘Dutch’ α coefficients proved to be satisfactory. Furthermore, the Dutch DAPP-BQ scales were factor analyzed, retaining four factors. Three of these factors proved to be identical (Emotional Dysregulation and Dissocial) or nearly identical (Compulsivity) to the Canadian factors. However, the original factor Inhibition was not the same as the remaining Dutch factor Intimacy Problems. In a sample of 115 students, the estimated scores for the Dutch Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology-Basic Questionnaire (DAPP-BQ) factors were correlated with the scales of Van Kampen's Four-Dimensional Personality Test. As expected, Emotional Dysregulation was found to correlate with Neuroticism, Dissocial with Insensitivity, and Compulsivity with Orderliness. The Intimacy Problems factor proved to be negatively correlated with Extraversion. The results obtained are embedded in the context of the evidence favoring a dimensional model of personality disorder. Furthermore, Livesley's proposal that separate diagnostic criteria for the existence of a personality disorder must be formulated to supplement the assessment by means of the DAPP-BQ is critically discussed

An augmentation algorithm for improving longevity in ad hoc wireless networks

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 71-74).This thesis presents an investigation into improving the longevity of wireless ad hoc networks. The primary contribution of this study is an augmentation algorithm that takes a two-dimensional network arrangement. and systematically adds augmented nodes to create a bi-connected topology. Simulations were run to compare the performance of these augmented networks with their initial layouts. Additionally, two different routing protocols were compared to evaluate their effects on network lifetime when combined with network augmentation. These routing protocols each take a unique approach to managing the network's energy resources. The results demonstrate that bi-connectivity is usually able to directly improve network lifetime. Additionally, it offers the greatest degree of improvement to networks which employ clever power management techniques.by Jonathan Charles Hyler.M.Eng

Millennial Generation Opinions of the Military: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This study examines the attitudes, values, and beliefs of the Millennial generation as they relate to military service. Specifically, the study looks at factors that influence Millennials perceptions of the military, including attitudes toward the repeal of the policy known as Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Information was collected via a survey and follow-up focus group discussions, administered during February 2011 at four community colleges in the Monterey Bay area. A total of 481students participated. Data analysis focused on identifying attitudinal changes over the past 10 years, particularly across gender. Study results reveal the following youth have little knowledge about the military and the educational opportunities available; higher education is the militarys top competitor; female Millennials are more likely to attend college after high school; Millennials value extrinsic benefits, as well as intrinsic benefits such as flexibility in the workplace; and the majority of youth support equal rights, believing that gays should not be restricted from military service. Recommendations are offered to improve recruiting, particularly in better aligning individual goals with the militarys unique value to achieve these goals.http://archive.org/details/millennialgenera1094532839Lieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited
