Improvements in estimating proportions of objects from multispectral data
Methods for estimating proportions of objects and materials imaged within the instantaneous field of view of a multispectral sensor were developed further. Improvements in the basic proportion estimation algorithm were devised as well as improved alien object detection procedures. Also, a simplified signature set analysis scheme was introduced for determining the adequacy of signature set geometry for satisfactory proportion estimation. Averaging procedures used in conjunction with the mixtures algorithm were examined theoretically and applied to artificially generated multispectral data. A computationally simpler estimator was considered and found unsatisfactory. Experiments conducted to find a suitable procedure for setting the alien object threshold yielded little definitive result. Mixtures procedures were used on a limited amount of ERTS data to estimate wheat proportion in selected areas. Results were unsatisfactory, partly because of the ill-conditioned nature of the pure signature set

Polarized light ions and spectator nucleon tagging at EIC
An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with suitable forward detection capabilities
would enable a unique experimental program of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS)
from polarized light nuclei (deuterium 2H, helium 3He) with spectator nucleon
tagging. Such measurements promise significant advances in several key areas of
nuclear physics and QCD: (a) neutron spin structure, by using polarized
deuterium and eliminating nuclear effects through on-shell extrapolation in the
spectator proton momentum; (b) quark/gluon structure of the bound nucleon at x
> 0.1 and the dynamical mechanisms acting on it, by measuring the spectator
momentum dependence of nuclear structure functions; (c) coherent effects in
QCD, by exploring shadowing in tagged DIS on deuterium at x << 0.1. The JLab
MEIC design (CM energy sqrt{s} = 15-50 GeV/nucleon, luminosity ~ 10^{34}
cm^{-2} s^{-1}) provides polarized deuterium beams and excellent coverage and
resolution for forward spectator tagging. We summarize the physics topics, the
detector and beam requirements for spectator tagging, and on-going R&D efforts.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Prepared for proceedings of DIS 2014, XXII.

Attenuation of amiodarone induced lung fibrosis and phospholipidosis in hamsters, by treatment with the platelet activating factor receptor antagonist, WEB 2086
Therapeutic use of amiodarone (AMD), a Class III antiarrhythmic drug is complicated by the development of lung fibrosis (LF) and phospholipidosis (PL). In the present study, the effectiveness of a PAF antagonist, WEB 2086, against AMD induced LF and PL has been tested in hamsters. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: (1) saline + H2O; (2) WEB + H2O; (3) saline + AMD; and (4) WEB + AMD. Saline or WEB (10 mg/kg i.p.) was given 2 days prior to intratracheal instillation of water or AMD (1.5 μmol/0.25 ml/100 g BW) and thereafter daily throughout the study. Twenty-eight days after intratracheal instillation, the animals were killed and the lungs processed for various assays. The amount of lung hydroxyproline, an index of LF, in saline + H2O, WEB + H2O, saline + AMD, and WEB + AMD groups were 959 ± 46, 1035 ± 51, 1605 ± 85 and 1374 ± 69 μg/lung, respectively. Total lung PL, an index of phospholipidosis, in the corresponding groups were 8.4 ± 0.4, 8.3 ± 0.3, 11.7 ± 0.3 and 9.9 μg/lung. Lung malondialdehyde, an index of lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase activity in saline + H2O WEB + H2O, saline + AMD, and WEB + AMD were 93.0 ± 4.3, 93.0 ± 2.7, 138.9 ± 6.0 and 109.0 ± 3.8 nmol/lung and 359.7 ± 13.9, 394.0 ± 22.8, 497.5 ± 19.7 and 425.5 ± 4.9 units/lung, respectively. Administration of AMD alone caused significant increases in all the above indexes of lung toxicity, and treatment with WEB 2086 minimized the AMD induced toxicity as reflected by significant decreases in these indexes. Histopathological studies revealed a marked reduction in the extent and severity of lung lesions in the WEB + AMD group compared with the saline + AMD group. Treatment with WEB 2086 also reduced the acute mortality from 35% in saline + AMD group to 22% in WEB + AMD group. It was concluded that PAF is involved in the AMD induced lung fibrosis and phospholipidosis and that the PAF receptor antagonist may, therefore, be potentially useful in reducing AMD induced lung toxicity
LMC X-1: A New Spectral Analysis of the O-star in the binary and surrounding nebula
We provide new observations of the LMC X-1 O star and its extended nebula
structure using spectroscopic data from VLT/UVES as well as H imaging
from the Wide Field Imager on the Max Planck Gesellschaft / European Southern
Observatory 2.2m telescope and ATCA imaging of the 2.1 GHz radio continuum.
This nebula is one of the few known to be energized by an X-ray binary. We use
a new spectrum extraction technique that is superior to other methods to obtain
both radial velocities and fluxes. This provides an updated spatial velocity of
km s for the O star. The slit encompasses both the
photo-ionized and shock-ionized regions of the nebula. The imaging shows a
clear arc-like structure reminiscent of a wind bow shock in between the
ionization cone and shock-ionized nebula. The observed structure can be fit
well by the parabolic shape of a wind bow shock. If an interpretation of a wind
bow shock system is valid, we investigate the N159-O1 star cluster as a
potential parent of the system, suggesting a progenitor mass of
M for the black hole. We further note that the radio emission could
be non-thermal emission from the wind bow shock, or synchrotron emission
associated with the jet inflated nebula. For both wind and jet-powered origins,
this would represent one of the first radio detections of such a structure.Comment: 7 Figures, 4 Table
Sports mega-events – three sites of contemporary political contestation
This article discusses the contemporary politics of sports mega-events, involving the Olympic Games and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Men’s Football World Cup Finals as well as other lower ‘order’ sports megas, taking two main forms: the promotional and the protest. There is a politics in, and a politics of, sports mega-events. The former focuses on the internal politics of the organizing bodies, such as the International Olympic Committee and FIFA. This form of politics has been written about elsewhere, and hence, there is no detailed discussion in this article about it. Instead this article offers a brief discussion of the range and number of sports mega-events since 2000, an assessment of the contemporary politics of sports mega-events, a focus on three main sites of political contestation – rights, legacy and labour, and finally, it offers conclusions about research into the politics of sports mega-events
Neutron spin structure with polarized deuterons and spectator proton tagging at EIC
The neutron's deep-inelastic structure functions provide essential
information for the flavor separation of the nucleon parton densities, the
nucleon spin decomposition, and precision studies of QCD phenomena in the
flavor-singlet and nonsinglet sectors. Traditional inclusive measurements on
nuclear targets are limited by dilution from scattering on protons, Fermi
motion and binding effects, final-state interactions, and nuclear shadowing at
x << 0.1. An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) would enable next-generation
measurements of neutron structure with polarized deuteron beams and detection
of forward-moving spectator protons over a wide range of recoil momenta (0 <
p_R < several 100 MeV in the nucleus rest frame). The free neutron structure
functions could be obtained by extrapolating the measured recoil momentum
distributions to the on-shell point. The method eliminates nuclear
modifications and can be applied to polarized scattering, as well as to
semi-inclusive and exclusive final states. We review the prospects for neutron
structure measurements with spectator tagging at EIC, the status of R&D
efforts, and the accelerator and detector requirements.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. To appear in proceedings of Tensor Polarized

Generalized parton distributions and rapidity gap survival in exclusive diffractive pp scattering
We propose a new approach to the problem of rapidity gap survival (RGS) in
the production of high-mass systems (H = dijet, heavy quarkonium, Higgs boson)
in double-gap exclusive diffractive pp scattering, pp -> p + (gap) + H + (gap)
+ p. It is based on the idea that hard and soft interactions proceed over
widely different time- and distance scales and are thus approximately
independent. The high-mass system is produced in a hard scattering process with
exchange of two gluons between the protons. Its amplitude is calculable in
terms of the gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the protons,
which can be measured in J/psi production in exclusive ep scattering. The hard
scattering process is modified by soft spectator interactions, which we
calculate in a model-independent way in terms of the pp elastic scattering
amplitude. Contributions from inelastic intermediate states are suppressed. A
simple geometric picture of the interplay of hard and soft interactions in
diffraction is obtained. The onset of the black-disk limit in pp scattering at
TeV energies strongly suppresses diffraction at small impact parameters and is
the main factor in determining the RGS probability. Correlations between hard
and soft interactions (e.g. due to scattering from the long-range pion field of
the proton, or due to possible short-range transverse correlations between
partons) further decrease the RGS probability. We also investigate the
dependence of the diffractive cross section on the transverse momenta of the
final-state protons ("diffraction pattern"). By measuring this dependence one
can perform detailed tests of the interplay of hard and soft interactions, and
even extract information about the gluon GPD in the proton. Such studies appear
to be feasible with the planned forward detectors at the LHC.Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, uses revtex
