    Sexual differences in exploration behavior in Xenopus tropicalis?

    The two sexes of a species often differ in many ways. How sexes differ depends on the selective context, with females often investing more in reproductive output and males in territory defense and resource acquisition. This also implies that behavioral strategies may differ between the two sexes, allowing them to optimize their fitness in a given ecological context. Here, we investigated whether males and females differ in their exploration behavior in an aquatic frog (Xenopus tropicalis). Moreover, we explored whether females show different behavioral strategies in the exploration of a novel environment as has been demonstrated previously for males of the same species. Our results show significant sex differences, with males exploring their environment more than females. Yet, similar to males, female exploratory behavior varied significantly among individuals and broadly fell into three categories: shy, intermediate and bold. Moreover, like in males, behavioral strategies are decoupled from morphology and performance. Our results suggest that females are more sedentary than males, with males engaging in greater risk taking by exploring novel environments more. Male and female behaviors could, however, be classified into similar groups, with some individuals being bolder than others and displaying more exploration behavior. The decoupling of morphology and performance from behavior appears to be a general feature in the species and may allow selection to act on both types of traits independently

The development of standardized data collection as part of routine clinical care through Multiple Sclerosis Partners Advancing Technology and Health Solutions (MS PATHS) was developed and implemented at CC, JH, and CEMCAT in partnership with Biogen. Biogen did not have involvement in study design, data analysis or interpretation, or manuscript preparation.People with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be at higher risk for complications from the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic due to use of immunomodulatory disease modifying therapies (DMTs) and greater need for medical services. To evaluate risk factors for COVID-19 susceptibility and describe the pandemic's impact on healthcare delivery. Surveys sent to MS patients at Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and Vall d'Hebron-Centre d'Esclerosi Múltiple de Catalunya in April and May 2020 collected information about comorbidities, DMTs, exposures, COVID-19 testing/outcomes, health behaviors, and disruptions to MS care. There were 3028/10,816 responders. Suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases were more likely to have a known COVID-19 contact (odds ratio (OR): 4.38; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04, 18.54). In multivariable-adjusted models, people who were younger, had to work on site, had a lower education level, and resided in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas were less likely to follow social distancing guidelines. 4.4% reported changes to therapy plans, primarily delays in infusions, and 15.5% a disruption to rehabilitative services. Younger people with lower socioeconomic status required to work on site may be at higher exposure risk and are potential targets for educational intervention and work restrictions to limit exposure. Providers should be mindful of potential infusion delays and MS care disruption

    Factors influencing avian community structure in bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States

    Bottomland hardwood forests (BHF) are a disappearing habitat of importance to numerous migratory and non-migratory birds of conservation concern. Thus, understanding variables of bottomland hardwood forests that affect avian assemblage patterns are of great interest. I examined factors influencing avian assemblage and guild patterns in BHF of Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in east-central Mississippi by conducting winter and spring fixed-radius avian point counts and vegetation surveys from 2002 ? 2004. The goals of this project were to 1) determine effects of greentree reservoir (GTR) management on breeding and wintering non-game bird community structure, 2) test hypotheses regarding plant structural complexity and avian assemblage patterns, and 3) examine the effects of landscapes on local bird assemblages within BHF. Greentree reservoirs have subtle effects on avian communities. Sites within GTRs, sites in BHF adjacent to GTRs, and random, unimpounded BHF sites differed significantly in breeding bird diversity, richness, and evenness. However, the patterns exhibited were a decreasing continuum of these variables with sites peripheral to GTRs demonstrating intermediate values. No differences were found among abundance, conservation status, or habitat specialization of breeding birds. Guild parameters did not differ except for a decreasing continuum in species richness among unimpounded BHF, BHF to GTRs, and GTR sites. The canopy nesting and ground gleaning foraging guilds were the only guilds found to differ among sites. Patterns could indicate that given the inherent structural variation of BHF, GTRs are within the expected range of variation, or GTR management could be indirectly affecting the surrounding landscape. GTR management did not affect community parameters for wintering birds, and only the bark gleaning foraging guild varied among sites (higher in GTRs). These results reflect the ubiquitous nature of wintering birds in east-central Mississippi forests. There was direct support for the structural vertical heterogeneity hypothesis; however, regression analyses of principal component scores derived from sixty structural descriptor metrics suggest that avian communities and guilds are more directly influenced by overall local plant structural complexity, as predicted by the spatial heterogeneity hypothesis.     Human immunodeficiency virus-related mortality in infants and children : Data from the pediatric pulmonary and cardiovascular complications of vertically transmitted HIV (P2C2) study

    OBJECTIVES: To identify the causes of mortality in children with vertically transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and to study age-related mortality trends. METHODS: In the multicenter P(2)C(2) HIV Study, 816 children born to HIV-infected mothers were followed for a median of 3.6 years. Two hundred five study participants with HIV infection were enrolled at a median age of 23 months; 611 were enrolled either prenatally or in the neonatal period before their HIV infection status was known. There were 121 deaths in study patients. The cause of death for all patients, its relationship to HIV infection, and pulmonary or cardiac involvement were determined. Age trends in disease-specific mortality were summarized for the HIV-related deaths. RESULTS: Ninety-three children died of HIV-related conditions. Infection was the most prevalent cause of death for children under 6 years of age with 32.3% caused by pulmonary infection and another 16.9% caused by nonpulmonary infection. The frequency of pulmonary disease as the underlying cause of death decreased significantly with increasing age: 5/9 (55.6%) by age 1, 1/12 (8.3%) after age 10 years. The frequency of chronic cardiac disease as the underlying cause increased with age—0% by age 1 year, 3/12 (25.0%) after age 10 years, as did the frequency of wasting syndrome with disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex—0% by age 1 year, 6/12 (50.0%) after age 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: Children with HIV who survive longer are less likely to die of pulmonary disease or infection and more likely to die of cardiac causes or with wasting syndrome. pediatric acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, mortality, human immunodeficiency virus
