Optical neuron using polarisation switching in a 1550nm-VCSEL
We report a new approach to mimic basic functionalities of a neuron using a 1550 nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) which is based on the polarisation switching (PS) that can be induced in these devices when subject to polarised optical injection. Positive and negative all-optical threshold operations are demonstrated experimentally using external optical injection into the two orthogonal polarizations of the fundamental transverse mode. The polarisation of the light emitted by the device is used to determine the state of the VCSEL-Neuron, active (orthogonal) or inactive (parallel). This approach forms a new way to reproduce optically the response of a neuron to an excitatory and an inhibitory stimulus. © 2010 Optical Society of America
Comprehensive experimental analysis of nonlinear dynamics in an optically-injected semiconductor laser
We present the first comprehensive experimental study, to our knowledge, of the routes between nonlinear dynamics induced in a semiconductor laser under external optical injection based on an analysis of time-averaged measurements of the optical and RF spectra and phasors of real-time series of the laser output. The different means of analysis are compared for several types of routes and the benefits of each are discussed in terms of the identification and mapping of the nonlinear dynamics. Finally, the results are presented in a novel audio/video format that describes the evolution of the dynamics with the injection parameters. © 2011 Author(s)
The effects of subsampling and between-haul variation on the size-selectivity estimation of Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi gayi)
Using the data collected in a size selectivity experiment on Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi gayi) carried out in 2000, the selectivity parameters for four codend mesh sizes (100, 110, 130, and 140 mm of mesh size opening) were estimated and modelled by the SELECT model. These analyses included considerations of the sampling proportions of the catch in the codend and cover. Furthermore, the analyses took into account between-haul variation. The l(50) values were 30.8, 29.9, 30.0, and 41.2 cm of total length, respectively, values lower than the estimates obtained from previous studies. The contribution of explanatory variables to the selectivity model was also tested in order to determine the role of mesh size, catch size (in number), and towing speed. Increases in catch size and in towing speed were accompanied by decreases in the l(50) estimates. These results demonstrate how incorporation of subsampling effect and explanatory variables to model between-haul variation can improve selectivity estimates and management of a valuable resource
Tunable microwave signal generator with an optically-injected 1310nm QD-DFB laser
Tunable microwave signal generation with frequencies ranging from below 1 GHz to values over 40 GHz is demonstrated experimentally with a 1310nm Quantum Dot (QD) Distributed-Feedback (DFB) laser. Microwave signal generation is achieved using the period 1 dynamics induced in the QD DFB under optical injection. Continuous tuning in the positive detuning frequency range of the quantum dot's unique stability map is demonstrated. The simplicity of the experimental configuration offers promise for novel uses of these nanostructure lasers in Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) applications and future mobile networks. © 2013 Optical Society of America
On k-Convex Polygons
We introduce a notion of -convexity and explore polygons in the plane that
have this property. Polygons which are \mbox{-convex} can be triangulated
with fast yet simple algorithms. However, recognizing them in general is a
3SUM-hard problem. We give a characterization of \mbox{-convex} polygons, a
particularly interesting class, and show how to recognize them in \mbox{} time. A description of their shape is given as well, which leads to
Erd\H{o}s-Szekeres type results regarding subconfigurations of their vertex
sets. Finally, we introduce the concept of generalized geometric permutations,
and show that their number can be exponential in the number of
\mbox{-convex} objects considered.Comment: 23 pages, 19 figure
Proximity Drawings of High-Degree Trees
A drawing of a given (abstract) tree that is a minimum spanning tree of the
vertex set is considered aesthetically pleasing. However, such a drawing can
only exist if the tree has maximum degree at most 6. What can be said for trees
of higher degree? We approach this question by supposing that a partition or
covering of the tree by subtrees of bounded degree is given. Then we show that
if the partition or covering satisfies some natural properties, then there is a
drawing of the entire tree such that each of the given subtrees is drawn as a
minimum spanning tree of its vertex set
Investigation of vertical cavity surface emitting laser dynamics for neuromorphic photonic systems
We report an approach based upon vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) to reproduce optically different behaviors exhibited by biological neurons but on a much faster timescale. The technique proposed is based on the polarization switching and nonlinear dynamics induced in a single VCSEL under polarized optical injection. The particular attributes of VCSELs and the simple experimental configuration used in this work offer prospects of fast, reconfigurable processing elements with excellent fan-out and scaling potentials for use in future computational paradigms and artificial neural networks. © 2012 American Institute of Physics
Reentrant Behavior of the Spinodal Curve in a Nonequilibrium Ferromagnet
The metastable behavior of a kinetic Ising--like ferromagnetic model system
in which a generic type of microscopic disorder induces nonequilibrium steady
states is studied by computer simulation and a mean--field approach. We pay
attention, in particular, to the spinodal curve or intrinsic coercive field
that separates the metastable region from the unstable one. We find that, under
strong nonequilibrium conditions, this exhibits reentrant behavior as a
function of temperature. That is, metastability does not happen in this regime
for both low and high temperatures, but instead emerges for intermediate
temperature, as a consequence of the non-linear interplay between thermal and
nonequilibrium fluctuations. We argue that this behavior, which is in contrast
with equilibrium phenomenology and could occur in actual impure specimens,
might be related to the presence of an effective multiplicative noise in the
system.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; Final version to appear in Phys. Rev. E; Section

Stability of the nonlinear dynamics of an optically injected VCSEL
Automated protocols have been developed to characterize time series data in terms of stability. These techniques are applied to the output power time series of an optically injected vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to varying injection strength and optical frequency detuning between master and slave lasers. Dynamic maps, generated from high resolution, computer controlled experiments, identify regions of dynamic instability in the parameter space. © 2012 Optical Society of America
