Reverse undercompressive shock structures in driven thin film flow
We show experimental evidence of a new structure involving an
undercompressive and reverse undercompressive shock for draining films driven
by a surface tension gradient against gravity. The reverse undercompressive
shock is unstable to transverse perturbations while the leading
undercompressive shock is stable. Depending on the pinch-off film thickness, as
controlled by the meniscus, either a trailing rarefaction wave or a compressive
shock separates from the reverse undercompressive shock
Solving Nonlinear Parabolic Equations by a Strongly Implicit Finite-Difference Scheme
We discuss the numerical solution of nonlinear parabolic partial differential
equations, exhibiting finite speed of propagation, via a strongly implicit
finite-difference scheme with formal truncation error . Our application of interest is the spreading of
viscous gravity currents in the study of which these type of differential
equations arise. Viscous gravity currents are low Reynolds number (viscous
forces dominate inertial forces) flow phenomena in which a dense, viscous fluid
displaces a lighter (usually immiscible) fluid. The fluids may be confined by
the sidewalls of a channel or propagate in an unconfined two-dimensional (or
axisymmetric three-dimensional) geometry. Under the lubrication approximation,
the mathematical description of the spreading of these fluids reduces to
solving the so-called thin-film equation for the current's shape . To
solve such nonlinear parabolic equations we propose a finite-difference scheme
based on the Crank--Nicolson idea. We implement the scheme for problems
involving a single spatial coordinate (i.e., two-dimensional, axisymmetric or
spherically-symmetric three-dimensional currents) on an equispaced but
staggered grid. We benchmark the scheme against analytical solutions and
highlight its strong numerical stability by specifically considering the
spreading of non-Newtonian power-law fluids in a variable-width confined
channel-like geometry (a "Hele-Shaw cell") subject to a given mass
conservation/balance constraint. We show that this constraint can be
implemented by re-expressing it as nonlinear flux boundary conditions on the
domain's endpoints. Then, we show numerically that the scheme achieves its full
second-order accuracy in space and time. We also highlight through numerical
simulations how the proposed scheme accurately respects the mass

Amplitude equations for a system with thermohaline convection
The multiple scale expansion method is used to derive amplitude equations for
a system with thermohaline convection in the neighborhood of Hopf and Taylor
bifurcation points and at the double zero point of the dispersion relation. A
complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, a Newell-Whitehead-type equation, and an
equation of the type, respectively, were obtained. Analytic
expressions for the coefficients of these equations and their various
asymptotic forms are presented. In the case of Hopf bifurcation for low and
high frequencies, the amplitude equation reduces to a perturbed nonlinear
Schr\"odinger equation. In the high-frequency limit, structures of the type of
"dark" solitons are characteristic of the examined physical system.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure
The camera of the fifth H.E.S.S. telescope. Part I: System description
In July 2012, as the four ground-based gamma-ray telescopes of the H.E.S.S.
(High Energy Stereoscopic System) array reached their tenth year of operation
in Khomas Highlands, Namibia, a fifth telescope took its first data as part of
the system. This new Cherenkov detector, comprising a 614.5 m^2 reflector with
a highly pixelized camera in its focal plane, improves the sensitivity of the
current array by a factor two and extends its energy domain down to a few tens
of GeV.
The present part I of the paper gives a detailed description of the fifth
H.E.S.S. telescope's camera, presenting the details of both the hardware and
the software, emphasizing the main improvements as compared to previous

Experimental investigation of the initial regime in fingering electrodeposition: dispersion relation and velocity measurements
Recently a fingering morphology, resembling the hydrodynamic Saffman-Taylor
instability, was identified in the quasi-two-dimensional electrodeposition of
copper. We present here measurements of the dispersion relation of the growing
front. The instability is accompanied by gravity-driven convection rolls at the
electrodes, which are examined using particle image velocimetry. While at the
anode the theory presented by Chazalviel et al. describes the convection roll,
the flow field at the cathode is more complicated because of the growing
deposit. In particular, the analysis of the orientation of the velocity vectors
reveals some lag of the development of the convection roll compared to the

Internal construct validity of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS): a Rasch analysis using data from the Scottish Health Education Population Survey
Background: The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) was developed to meet demand for instruments
to measure mental well-being. It comprises 14 positively phrased Likert-style items and fulfils classic criteria for scale development. We report here the internal construct validity of WEMWBS from the perspective of the Rasch measurement model.
Methods: The model was applied to data collected from 779 respondents in Wave 12 (Autumn 2006) of the Scottish Health
Education Population Survey. Respondents were aged 16–74 (average 41.9) yrs.
Results: Initial fit to model expectations was poor. The items 'I've been feeling good about myself', 'I've been interested in new things' and 'I've been feeling cheerful' all showed significant misfit to model expectations, and were deleted. This led to a marginal improvement in fit to the model. After further analysis, more items were deleted and a strict unidimensional seven item scale (the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (SWEMWBS)) was resolved. Many items deleted because of misfit with
model expectations showed considerable bias for gender. Two retained items also demonstrated bias for gender but, at the
scale level, cancelled out. One further retained item 'I've been feeling optimistic about the future' showed bias for age. The correlation between the 14 item and 7 item versions was 0.954. Given fit to the Rasch model, and strict unidimensionality, SWEMWBS provides an interval scale estimate of mental well-being.
Conclusion: A short 7 item version of WEMWBS was found to satisfy the strict unidimensionality expectations of the Rasch model, and be largely free of bias. This scale, SWEMWBS, provides a raw score-interval scale transformation for use in parametric procedures. In terms of face validity, SWEMWBS presents a more restricted view of mental well-being than the 14 item WEMWBS, with most items representing aspects of psychological and eudemonic well-being, and few covering hedonic well-being or affect. However, robust measurement properties combined with brevity make SWEMWBS preferable to WEMWBS at present for monitoring mental well-being in populations. Where face validity is an issue there remain arguments for continuing to collect data on the full 14 item WEMWBS
Paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder and depressive symptoms: clinical correlates and CBT treatment outcomes.
Depression frequently co-occurs with paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet the clinical correlates and impact of depression on CBT outcomes remain unclear. The prevalence and clinical correlates of depression were examined in a paediatric specialist OCD-clinic sample (N = 295; Mean = 15 [7 - 18] years, 42 % female), using both dimensional (Beck Depression Inventory-youth; n = 261) and diagnostic (Development and Wellbeing Assessment; n = 127) measures of depression. The impact of depressive symptoms and suspected disorders on post-treatment OCD severity was examined in a sub-sample who received CBT, with or without SSRI medication (N = 100). Fifty-one per-cent of patients reported moderately or extremely elevated depressive symptoms and 26 % (95 % CI: 18 - 34) met criteria for a suspected depressive disorder. Depressive symptoms and depressive disorders were associated with worse OCD symptom severity and global functioning prior to CBT. Individuals with depression were more likely to be female, have had a psychiatric inpatient admission and less likely to be attending school (ps < 0.01). OCD and depressive symptom severity significantly decreased after CBT. Depressive symptoms and depressive disorders predicted worse post-treatment OCD severity (βs = 0.19 and 0.26, ps < 0.05) but became non-significant when controlling for pre-treatment OCD severity (βs = 0.05 and 0.13, ns). Depression is common in paediatric OCD and is associated with more severe OCD and poorer functioning. However, depression severity decreases over the course of CBT for OCD and is not independently associated with worse outcomes, supporting the recommendation for treatment as usual in the presence of depressive symptoms
Age-related changes in global motion coherence: conflicting haemodynamic and perceptual responses
Our aim was to use both behavioural and neuroimaging data to identify indicators of perceptual decline in motion processing. We employed a global motion coherence task and functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). Healthy adults (n = 72, 18-85) were recruited into the following groups: young (n = 28, mean age = 28), middle-aged (n = 22, mean age = 50), and older adults (n = 23, mean age = 70). Participants were assessed on their motion coherence thresholds at 3 different speeds using a psychophysical design. As expected, we report age group differences in motion processing as demonstrated by higher motion coherence thresholds in older adults. Crucially, we add correlational data showing that global motion perception declines linearly as a function of age. The associated fNIRS recordings provide a clear physiological correlate of global motion perception. The crux of this study lies in the robust linear correlation between age and haemodynamic response for both measures of oxygenation. We hypothesise that there is an increase in neural recruitment, necessitating an increase in metabolic need and blood flow, which presents as a higher oxygenated haemoglobin response. We report age-related changes in motion perception with poorer behavioural performance (high motion coherence thresholds) associated with an increased haemodynamic response
A Census Of Highly Symmetric Combinatorial Designs
As a consequence of the classification of the finite simple groups, it has
been possible in recent years to characterize Steiner t-designs, that is
t-(v,k,1) designs, mainly for t = 2, admitting groups of automorphisms with
sufficiently strong symmetry properties. However, despite the finite simple
group classification, for Steiner t-designs with t > 2 most of these
characterizations have remained longstanding challenging problems. Especially,
the determination of all flag-transitive Steiner t-designs with 2 < t < 7 is of
particular interest and has been open for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 147] and
[12, p. 273], but presumably dating back to 1965). The present paper continues
the author's work [20, 21, 22] of classifying all flag-transitive Steiner
3-designs and 4-designs. We give a complete classification of all
flag-transitive Steiner 5-designs and prove furthermore that there are no
non-trivial flag-transitive Steiner 6-designs. Both results rely on the
classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups. Moreover, we

Five Ways to Wellbeing: holistic narratives of public health programme participants
This paper reports on a study which formed part of a qualitative process evaluation of a wellbeing programme in North West England. The study used the biographic narrative interpretive method (BNIM) to undertake and analyse data from interviews with six participants from diverse projects within the programme. This generated rich case studies and spotlighted cross-case commonalities, building understanding of how the programme achieved its effects. We present findings using the Five Ways to Wellbeing framework, presenting one abridged ‘case’ and summarising cross-cutting themes. We explore how BNIM gives insight into the psychosocial complexity of wellbeing, building understanding of its holistic and dynamic nature, and then highlight the flexibility, resonance and widespread appeal of Five Ways to Wellbeing. In concluding, we argue that by enabling participants to tell their own stories of participation in the different projects, we gain a more authentic understanding of the ‘whole’ story of how involvement has affected wellbeing. Such approaches are crucial as wellbeing becomes a central concept in global health policy and promotion
