    Heavy Quark Thermalization in Classical Lattice Gauge Theory: Lessons for Strongly-Coupled QCD

    Thermalization of a heavy quark near rest is controlled by the correlator of two electric fields along a temporal Wilson line. We address this correlator within real-time, classical lattice Yang-Mills theory, and elaborate on the analogies that exist with the dynamics of hot QCD. In the weak-coupling limit, it can be shown analytically that the dynamics on the two sides are closely related to each other. For intermediate couplings, we carry out non-perturbative simulations within the classical theory, showing that the leading term in the weak-coupling expansion significantly underestimates the heavy quark thermalization rate. Our analytic and numerical results also yield a general understanding concerning the overall shape of the spectral function corresponding to the electric field correlator, which may be helpful in subsequent efforts to reconstruct it from Euclidean lattice Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 22 pages. v2: a reference and clarifications added; published versio

    Suitable and Effective Coyote Control Tools for the Urban/Suburban Setting

    Increases in the incidence of human conflict with coyotes in urban/suburban environments fuel a need for suitable coyote tools and methods to reduce these conflicts. Traditional tools, such as foothold traps and snares, face continued problems of acceptability in urban/suburban situations because of public anxiety about the risks to non-targets as well as other animal welfare concerns. We review the major categories of methods and tools used to prevent or reduce urban coyote-human conflicts, including exclusion (fencing), environmental and habitat modification, capture devices (traps, snares, and related devices), and shooting. We briefly discuss future technologies current under development: fertility control, toxicants, and electronic trap monitoring. Among capture devices, we describe recent advances in technology as exemplified by three devices: the KB Compound 5.5TM, the BĂ©lisleTM footsnare, and the CollarumTM, which have gone a long way to address both capture efficiency and animal welfare concerns. We caution those involved in advising legislators, or in drafting legislation, to be aware of developing technologies, so as to avoid writing laws that are so broad as to ban future capture devices that improve on current devices in terms of humaneness and animal welfare

    Colour-electric spectral function at next-to-leading order

    The spectral function related to the correlator of two colour-electric fields along a Polyakov loop determines the momentum diffusion coefficient of a heavy quark near rest with respect to a heat bath. We compute this spectral function at next-to-leading order, O(alpha_s^2), in the weak-coupling expansion. The high-frequency part of our result (omega >> T), which is shown to be temperature-independent, is accurately determined thanks to asymptotic freedom; the low-frequency part of our result (omega << T), in which Hard Thermal Loop resummation is needed in order to cure infrared divergences, agrees with a previously determined expression. Our result may help to calibrate the overall normalization of a lattice-extracted spectral function in a perturbative frequency domain T << omega << 1/a, paving the way for a non-perturbative estimate of the momentum diffusion coefficient at omega -> 0. We also evaluate the colour-electric Euclidean correlator, which could be directly compared with lattice simulations. As an aside we determine the Euclidean correlator in the lattice strong-coupling expansion, showing that through a limiting procedure it can in principle be defined also in the confined phase of pure Yang-Mills theory, even if a practical measurement could be very noisy there.Comment: 38 page

    One of the current main challenges in green-power storage and smart grids is the lack of effective solutions for accommodating the unbalance between renewable energy sources - offering intermittent electricity supply - and a variable electricity demand. Integrating intermittent renewable energy sources by safe and cost-effective energy storage systems is today achievable. Coupled with electrolizers, high-capacity solid-state storage of green-hydrogen is practicable to sustain integration, monitoring and control of large quantity of GWh from renewable generation. The 23.9 MLN Euros INGRID European large demonstrative project started in July 2012 combines magnesium-based material solid-state hydrogen storage systems with advanced ICT technologies to intelligently interconnect miscellaneous energy networks (i.e. electricity and gas) and safely delivering green-hydrogen to various existing or forthcoming markets. One solution INGRID project addresses is an off-grid utility to store renewable electricity captured from wind sources to refill full-battery electric cars

    Dating the Tejo river lower terraces in the RĂłdĂŁo area (Portugal) to assess the role of tectonics and uplift

    The Tejo river is one of the major drainages in Iberian Peninsula; it is a long-lived system (ca. 3.4 Ma) and provides an archive of long-term landscape development and environmental change controlled by tectonics, climate and eustasy. The most upstream Portuguese reach of the Tejo river, ~ 200 km from the Atlantic coast, shows evidence for five fluvial terraces (T1 to T5) with elevations reaching more than 120 m above the modern river bed. A chronological framework for these terraces is established here by integrating geomorphological, stratigraphical and archaeological information with ages from luminescence dating. Optically stimulated luminescence dating of K-feldspar, (involving the correction for anomalous fading of the luminescence signal), indicates that the younger terraces have a probable age range of: T5 -- 31 to 40 ka; and T4 -- 100 to ~ 280 ka. We deduce that the related major fluvial changes are likely to have been as follows: ~ 10 m of aggradation from ~ 280 to 100 ka (0.06 m/ka); 14 m of incision from 100 to 40 ka (0.23 m/ka); 8 m of aggradation from 40 to 31 ka (0.89 m/ka); 16 m of incision during the last 31 ka (0.52 m/ka). These values indicate that the duration and rate of both aggradation and river downcutting episodes were variable. There is widespread evidence for neotectonic activity in this intraplate region. Neither eustatic nor climatic changes during the Quaternary provide clear trends that might explain the observed pattern of valley incision, thus we conclude that this tectonic activity is the most likely driving mechanism. In the study area, the probable age of the Tejo river sediments deposited before the beginning of valley incision allows the calculation of a time-averaged incision rate of ~ 0.07 to 0.10 m/ka over the last ~ 2.6 Ma. This long-term incision was probably determined by an increase in the relative uplift rate, resulting from the intensification of intraplate compressive stress. During the late Cenozoic fluvial incision stage, the Ródão depression underwent less uplift than the adjacent areas along the river, in which the Tejo has incised a narrow valley into basement rock, with almost no terrace development. Terrace formation was also promoted by soft bedrock (Tertiary arkoses) and by impoundment of alluvium behind resistant barriers crossed by the river.     Optical backscattering properties of the "clearest" natural waters

    International audienceDuring the BIOSOPE field campaign October–December 2004, measurements of inherent optical properties from the surface to 500 m depth were made with a ship profiler at stations covering over ~8000 km through the Southeast Pacific Ocean. Data from a ~3000 km section containing the very clearest waters in the central gyre are reported here. The total volume scattering function at 117°, ßt(117°), was measured with a WET Labs ECO-BB3 sensor at 462, 532, and 650 nm with estimated uncertainties of 2×10-5, 5×10-6, and 2×10-6 m-1 sr-1, respectively. These values were approximately 6%, 3%, and 3% of the scattering by pure seawater at their respective wavelengths. From a methodological perspective, there were several results: – bbp distributions were resolvable even though some of the values from the central gyre were an order of magnitude lower than the lowest previous measurements in the literature; – Direct in-situ measurements of instrument dark offsets were necessary to accurately resolve backscattering at these low levels; – accurate pure seawater backscattering values are critical in determining particulate backscattering coefficients in the open ocean (not only in these very clear waters); the pure water scattering values determined by Buiteveld et al. (1994) with a [1 + 0.3S/37] adjustment for salinity based on Morel (1974) appear to be the most accurate estimates, with aggregate accuracies as low as a few percent; and – closure was demonstrated with subsurface reflectance measurements reported by Morel et al. (2007) within instrument precisions, a useful factor in validating the backscattering measurements. This methodology enabled several observations with respect to the hydrography and the use of backscattering as a biogeochemical proxy: – The clearest waters sampled were found at depths between 300 and 350 m, from 23.5° S, 118° W to 26° S, 114° W, where total backscattering at 650 nm was not distinguishable from pure seawater; – Distributions of particulate backscattering bbp across the central gyre exhibited a broad particle peak centered ~100 m; – The particulate backscattering ratio typically ranged between 0.4% and 0.6% through the majority of the central gyre from the surface to ~210 m, indicative of "soft" water-filled particles with low bulk refractive index; and – bbp at 532 and 650 nm showed a distinct secondary deeper layer centered ~230 m that was absent in particulate attenuation cp data. The particulate backscattering ratio was significantly higher in this layer than in the rest of the water column, reaching 1.2% in some locations. This high relative backscattering, along with the pigment composition and ecological niche of this layer, appear to be consistent with the coccolithophorid F. profunda. Moreover, results were consistent with several expectations extrapolated from theory and previous work in oceanic and coastal regions, supporting the conclusion that particulate and total backscattering could be resolved in these extremely clear natural waters

    Collinear and Soft Limits of Multi-Loop Integrands in N=4 Yang-Mills

    It has been argued in arXiv:1112.6432 that the planar four-point integrand in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory is uniquely determined by dual conformal invariance together with the absence of a double pole in the integrand of the logarithm in the limit as a loop integration variable becomes collinear with an external momentum. In this paper we reformulate this condition in a simple way in terms of the amplitude itself, rather than its logarithm, and verify that it holds for two- and three-loop MHV integrands for n>4. We investigate the extent to which this collinear constraint and a constraint on the soft behavior of integrands can be used to determine integrands. We find an interesting complementarity whereby the soft constraint becomes stronger while the collinear constraint becomes weaker at larger n. For certain reasonable choices of basis at two and three loops the two constraints in unison appear strong enough to determine MHV integrands uniquely for all n.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures; v2: very minor change

    17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 modulates breast cancer protein profile and impacts cell migration

    INTRODUCTION: Human 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (17β-HSD1) is a steroid-converting enzyme that has long been known to play critical roles in estradiol synthesis and more recently in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) inactivation, showing a dual function that promotes breast cancer cell proliferation. Previously, we reported the first observation of the influence of the enzyme on endogenous estrogen-responsive gene expression. Here, we demonstrate the impact of 17β-HSD1 expression on the breast cancer cell proteome and investigate its role in cell migration. METHODS: 17β-HSD1 was stably transfected in MCF7 cells and the proteome of the generated cells overexpressing 17β-HSD1 (MCF7-17βHSD1 cells) was compared to that of the wild type MCF7 cells. Proteomics study was performed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometry analysis of differentially expressed protein spots. Reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to investigate the transcription of individual gene. The effect of 17β-HSD1 on MCF7 cell migration was verified by a wound-healing assay. RESULTS: Proteomic data demonstrate that the expression of more than 59 proteins is modulated following 17β-HSD1 overexpression. 17β-HSD1 regulates the expression of important genes and proteins that are relevant to cell growth control, such as BRCA2 and CDKN1A interacting protein (BCCIP) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) which are down- and upregulated in MCF7-17βHSD1 cells, respectively. RT-qPCR data reveal that 17β-HSD1 increases the mRNA levels of estrogen receptors (ER) alpha and beta by 171 and 120%, respectively, while decreasing that of the androgen receptor by 64%. Interestingly, 17β-HSD1 increases the mRNA transcript (by 3.6 times) and the protein expression of the metastasis suppressor gene nm23-H1 and the expression of the two enzymes are closely correlated. We have further shown that 17β-HSD1 expression is associated with an increase of MCF7 cell migration. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the regulation of important genes, we have demonstrated for the first time that 17β-HSD1 increases breast cancer cell migration, in spite of its positive regulation of the antimetastatic gene NM23. This is also correlated to its stimulation of breast cancer cell growth, further confirming its targeting in ER positive breast cancer. The novel findings in this study suggest several directions for future research on the contribution of 17β-HSD1 to breast cancer progression and related treatment

    Evidence for a late glacial advance near the beginning of the Younger Dryas in western New York State: An event postdating the record for local Laurentide ice sheet recession

    Widespread evidence of an unrecognized late glacial advance across preexisting moraines in western New York is confirmed by 40 14C ages and six new optically stimulated luminescence analyses between the Genesee Valley and the Cattaraugus Creek basin of eastern Lake Erie. The Late Wisconsin chronology is relatively unconstrained by local dating of moraines between Pennsylvania and Lake Ontario. Few published 14C ages record discrete events, unlike evidence in the upper Great Lakes and New England. The new 14C ages from wood in glacial tills along Buttermilk Creek south of Springville, New York, and reevaluation of numerous 14C ages from miscellaneous investigations in the Genesee Valley document a significant glacial advance into Cattaraugus and Livingston Counties between 13,000 and 13,300 cal yr B.P., near the Greenland Interstadial 1b (GI-1b) cooling leading into the transition from the Bölling-Alleröd to the Younger Dryas. The chronology from four widely distributed sites indicates that a Late Wisconsin advance spread till discontinuously over the surface, without significantly modifying the preexisting glacial topography. A short-lived advance by a partially grounded ice shelf best explains the evidence. The advance, ending 43 km south of Rochester and a similar distance south of Buffalo, overlaps the revised chronology for glacial Lake Iroquois, now considered to extend from ca. 14,800–13,000 cal yr B.P. The spread of the radiocarbon ages is similar to the well-known Two Creeks Forest Bed, which equates the event with the Two Rivers advance in Wisconsin
