    The influence of fall and spring herbicide application on winter wheat

    Non-Peer ReviewedThe use of 2,4-D for fall control of winter annuals weeds in winter wheat is recommended in the Canadian prairies but not in other winter wheat production areas. Field research was conducted for two years at several locations using 2,4-0, MCPA, dicamba, dicamba plus 2,4-D, bromoxynil, bromoxynil plus MCPA, chlorsulfuron and clopyralid applied fall and spring. Recommended and double recommended rates were tested to establish the existence of a safety margin. Norstar winter wheat was tolerant to fall applications of all herbicides when applied at recommended rates, however, grain yield was reduced at the double rate with 2,4-D, MCPA, bromoxynil, bromoxynil plus MCPA and clopyralid in some station years. Norstar was tolerant to spring applications of all herbicides except MCPA and clopyralid in several station years. Herbicides tested show promise for use in winter wheat production. Caution is warranted for spring application of MCPA and clopyralid

    Piecing Together the American Voting Puzzle: How Votersâ Personalities and Judgments of Issue Importance Mattered in the 2016 Presidential Election

    In the wake of the 2016 election, which surprised pundits and voters on both the left and the right, there has been renewed interest in understanding what predicts American votersâ choices. In this article, we investigate the roles of personality and issue importance in how people voted in the 2016 U.S. election. In this longitudinal study of 403 MTurk workers who voted in the election, we assessed the relations between personality (openness, social dominance orientation, and national identity importance) and issue importance (group rights and social justice, economic rights, and individual and national rights), and voting for Clinton or Trump. Our results indicate that both individual differences and issue importance as measured in July 2016 predicted votes in November. We also found that the links between personality and voting were mediated by issue importance.     25th-order high-temperature expansion results for three-dimensional Ising-like systems on the simple cubic lattice

    25th-order high-temperature series are computed for a general nearest-neighbor three-dimensional Ising model with arbitrary potential on the simple cubic lattice. In particular, we consider three improved potentials characterized by suppressed leading scaling corrections. Critical exponents are extracted from high-temperature series specialized to improved potentials, obtaining γ=1.2373(2)\gamma=1.2373(2), ν=0.63012(16)\nu=0.63012(16), α=0.1096(5)\alpha=0.1096(5), η=0.03639(15)\eta=0.03639(15), β=0.32653(10)\beta=0.32653(10), δ=4.7893(8)\delta=4.7893(8). Moreover, biased analyses of the 25th-order series of the standard Ising model provide the estimate Δ=0.52(3)\Delta=0.52(3) for the exponent associated with the leading scaling corrections. By the same technique, we study the small-magnetization expansion of the Helmholtz free energy. The results are then applied to the construction of parametric representations of the critical equation of state, using a systematic approach based on a global stationarity condition. Accurate estimates of several universal amplitude ratios are also presented.Comment: 40 pages, 15 figure

    X-Ray, UV, and radio timing observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120

    We report the results of monitoring of the radio galaxy 3C 120 with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Very Long Baseline Array, and Metsähovi Radio Observatory. The UV-optical continuum spectrum and R-band polarization can be explained by a superposition of an inverted-spectrum source with a synchrotron component containing a disordered magnetic field. The UV-optical and X-ray light curves include dips and flares, while several superluminal knots appear in the parsec-scale jet. The recovery time of the second dip was longer at UV-optical wavelengths, in conflict with a model in which the inner accretion disk (AD) is disrupted during a dip and then refilled from outer to inner radii. We favor an alternative scenario in which occasional polar alignments of the magnetic field in the disk and corona cause the flux dips and formation of shocks in the jet. Similar to observations of Seyfert galaxies, intra-band time lags of flux variations are longer than predicted by the standard AD model. This suggests that scattering or some other reprocessing occurs. The 37 GHz light curve is well-correlated with the optical-UV variations, with a ∼20 day delay. A radio flare in the jet occurred in a superluminal knot 0.14 milliarcseconds downstream of the 43 GHz "core," which places the site of the preceding X-ray/UV/optical flare within the core 0.5–1.3 pc from the black hole. The inverted UV-optical flare spectrum can be explained by a nearly monoenergetic electron distribution with energy similar to the minimum energy inferred in the TeV γ-ray emitting regions of some BL Lacertae objects.The authors thank I.     Bag-of-Colors for Biomedical Document Image Classification

    The number of biomedical publications has increased noticeably in the last 30 years. Clinicians and medical researchers regularly have unmet information needs but require more time for searching than is usually available to find publications relevant to a clinical situation. The techniques described in this article are used to classify images from the biomedical open access literature into categories, which can potentially reduce the search time. Only the visual information of the images is used to classify images based on a benchmark database of ImageCLEF 2011 created for the task of image classification and image retrieval. We evaluate particularly the importance of color in addition to the frequently used texture and grey level features. Results show that bags–of–colors in combination with the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) provide an image representation allowing to improve the classification quality. Accuracy improved from 69.75% of the best system in ImageCLEF 2011 using visual information, only, to 72.5% of the system described in this paper.     Critical exponents and equation of state of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class

    We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. We find gamma=1.3960(9), nu=0.7112(5), eta=0.0375(5), alpha=-0.1336(15), beta=0.3689(3), and delta=4.783(3). We consider an improved lattice phi^4 Hamiltonian with suppressed leading scaling corrections. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods and high-temperature expansions. The critical exponents are computed from high-temperature expansions specialized to the phi^4 improved model. By the same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of state in the whole critical region.     Academic advocacy in public health: Disciplinary ‘duty’ or political ‘propaganda’?

    The role of ‘advocacy’ within public health attracts considerable debate but is rarely the subject of empirical research. This paper reviews the available literature and presents data from qualitative research (interviews and focus groups conducted in the UK in 2011–2013) involving 147 professionals (working in academia, the public sector, the third sector and policy settings) concerned with public health in the UK. It seeks to address the following questions: (i) What is public health advocacy and how does it relate to research?; (ii) What role (if any) do professionals concerned with public health feel researchers ought to play in advocacy?; and (iii) For those researchers who do engage in advocacy, what are the risks and challenges and to what extent can these be managed/mitigated? In answering these questions, we argue that two deeply contrasting conceptualisations of ‘advocacy’ exist within public health, the most dominant of which (‘representational’) centres on strategies for ‘selling’ public health goals to decision-makers and the wider public. This contrasts with an alternative (less widely employed) conceptualisation of advocacy as ‘facilitational’. This approach focuses on working with communities whose voices are often unheard/ignored in policy to enable their views to contribute to debates. We argue that these divergent ways of thinking about advocacy speak to a more fundamental challenge regarding the role of the public in research, policy and practice and the activities that connect these various strands of public health research

    The Formation and Evolution of Massive Stellar Clusters in IC 4662

    We present a multiwavelength study of the formation of massive stellar clusters, their emergence from cocoons of gas and dust, and their feedback on surrounding matter. Using data that span from radio to optical wavelengths, including Spitzer and Hubble ACS observations, we examine the population of young star clusters in the central starburst region of the irregular Wolf-Rayet galaxy IC 4662. We model the radio-to-IR spectral energy distributions of embedded clusters to determine the properties of their HII regions and dust cocoons (sizes, masses, densities, temperatures), and use near-IR and optical data with mid-IR spectroscopy to constrain the properties of the embedded clusters themselves (mass, age, extinction, excitation, abundance). The two massive star-formation regions in IC 4662 are excited by stellar populations with ages of ~ 4 million years and masses of ~ 3 x 10^5 M_sun (assuming a Kroupa IMF). They have high excitation and sub-solar abundances, and they may actually be comprised of several massive clusters rather than the single monolithic massive compact objects known as Super Star Clusters (SSCs). Mid-IR spectra reveal that these clusters have very high extinctions, A_V ~ 20-25 mag, and that the dust in IC 4662 is well-mixed with the emitting gas, not in a foreground screen.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, to appear in proceedings of the conference "Young Massive Star Clusters: Initial Conditions and Environments ", held in Granada, Spain, September 200

    Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey with The Hubble Space Telescope: Stellar Cluster Catalogs and First Insights Into Cluster Formation and Evolution in NGC 628

    We report the large effort that is producing comprehensive high-level young star cluster (YSC) catalogs for a significant fraction of galaxies observed with the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) Hubble treasury program. We present the methodology developed to extract cluster positions, verify their genuine nature, produce multiband photometry (from NUV to NIR), and derive their physical properties via spectral energy distribution fitting analyses. We use the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628 as a test case for demonstrating the impact that LEGUS will have on our understanding of the formation and evolution of YSCs and compact stellar associations within their host galaxy. Our analysis of the cluster luminosity function from the UV to the NIR finds a steepening at the bright end and at all wavelengths suggesting a dearth of luminous clusters. The cluster mass function of NGC 628 is consistent with a power-law distribution of slopes ∼−2\sim -2 and a truncation of a few times 105 M⊙{M}_{\odot }. After their formation, YSCs and compact associations follow different evolutionary paths. YSCs survive for a longer time frame, confirming their being potentially bound systems. Associations disappear on timescales comparable to hierarchically organized star-forming regions, suggesting that they are expanding systems. We find mass-independent cluster disruption in the inner region of NGC 628, while in the outer part of the galaxy there is little or no disruption. We observe faster disruption rates for low mass (≤104 M⊙{M}_{\odot }) clusters, suggesting that a mass-dependent component is necessary to fully describe the YSC disruption process in NGC 628
