    Competition Between Sports Leagues: Theory and Evidence on Rival League Formation in North America

    We analyze the formation of rival leagues and deterrence by incumbent leagues in professional team sports, which is one of the least studied forms of competition in sports. We first survey the economic history of professional sport leagues in North America and develop stylized facts about rival league formation. We then develop a game-theoretical model to explain some of these interesting stylized facts, showing that if the bargaining power of the incumbent league is sufficiently small—i.e., less than a certain cutoff—the incumbent should choose expansion to deter the rival league formation; otherwise, it is optimal for the incumbent league to allow a rival league formation and then merge with it, conditional on rival league success. We further show that the incumbent league may pay players relatively high salaries as an alternative way to deter formation by a rival league

    Floc formation reduces the pH stress experienced by microorganisms living in alkaline environments

    The survival of microorganisms within a cementitious geological disposal facility for radioactive wastes is heavily dependent on their ability to survive the calcium dominated, hyper-alkaline conditions resulting from the dissolution of the cementitious materials. The present study shows that the formation of flocs, composed of a complex mixture of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), provides protection against alkaline pH values up to pH 13.0. The flocs were dominated by Alishewanella and Dietzia sp, producing a mannose rich carbohydrate fraction incorporating extracellular DNA, resulting in Ca2+ sequestration. EPS provided a ~10 µm thick layer around the cells within the centre of the flocs, which were capable of growth at pH 11.0 and 11.5, maintaining internal pH values of pH 10.4 and 10.7 respectively. Survival was observed at pH 12.0, where an internal floc pH of 11.6 was observed alongside a reduced associated biomass. Limited floc survival (<2 weeks) was observed at pH 13.0.This study demonstrates that flocs are able to maintain a lower internal pH in response to the hyperalkaline conditions expected to occur within a cementitious, geological disposal facility for radioactive wastes and indicates that floc communities within such a facility would be capable of survival up to a pH of 12.0

    Selective Growth of Low Stored Energy Grains During δ Sub-solvus Annealing in the Inconel 718 Nickel-Based Superalloy

    The microstructure stability during δ sub-solvus annealing in Inconel 718 was investigated, focusing on the conditions that may lead to the development of very large grains (about 100 μm) in a recrystallized fine grained matrix (4 to 5 μm) despite the presence of second-phase particles. Microstructure evolution was analyzed by EBSD (grain size, intragranular misorientation) and SEM (δ phase particles). Results confirm that, in the absence of stored energy, the grain structure is controlled by the δ phase particles, as predicted by the Smith–Zener equation. If the initial microstructure is strained (ε < 0.1) before annealing, then low stored energy grains grow to a large extent, despite the Zener pinning forces exerted by the second-phase particles on the grain boundaries. Those selectively growing grains could be those of the initial microstructure that were the least deformed, or they could result from a nucleation process. The balance of three forces acting on boundary migration controls the growth process: if the sum of capillarity and stored energy driving forces exceeds the Zener pinning force, then selective grain growth occurs. Such phenomenon could be simulated, using a level set approach in a finite element context, by taking into account the three forces acting on boundary migration and by considering a realistic strain energy distribution (estimated from EBSD measurements). © 2015, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International
