Material Construction of Care Workers’ Identity

This article takes a critical look at the unconscious and unnoticed effects of materiality on care workers’ identity. The data was collected through nonactive role-playing using written accounts, in which the respondents described how they felt about working in fictitious ‘good’ or ‘bad’ elderly care homes. The data was analyzed with rhetorical analysis. Five different identity strategies were identified in the accounts. Strong professional identity was defended by downplaying the significance of materiality. Adjustment and passive compliance were used to adjust to physical shortcomings of the work environment. A ‘rebellion’ was described as an extreme course of action to resolve the contradiction between good care and poor facilities. At its best, the materiality of care homes, in particular homelikeness, seemed to support professional identity. These identity strategies illustrate how care workers balance between the physical realities of care homes and the requirements of the ethos of care, which are often incompatible with each other. It is crucial that managers as well as workers themselves recognize and acknowledge these connections affecting motivation and commitment to care work. Investments in better environments could be one way to improve the image and the attractiveness of the care branch and relieve the recruitment problems

Emotional Dimensions in Integrated Care for People with Multiple Complex Problems

Cross-boundary collaboration, both multiprofessional and interorganizational, is needed when providing integrated care for people with multiple problems, who need services at the same time from diverse care providers. Multiple problems of clients also pose extra challenges for interaction between care professionals and clients. Emotional dynamics are always present in everyday interaction between human beings, but seldom explicitly addressed in research on integrated care. The aim of this reflective paper is to illustrate the emotional dimensions of integrated care in light of the experiences of care professionals in the context of care for people with multiple complex problems. The paper draws on a Finnish study on integrated care reflecting its findings from the perspective of emotional labor. The difficult life situations of people with multiple complex problems form an emotional burden, which is mirrored in the interaction between clients and professionals and affects relational dynamics among professionals. Professionals' fear of emotions and the different feeling rules' of care professions and sectors pose extra challenges to professionals' collaboration in this emotionally loaded context. Alongside the structural and functional aspects of integrated care, it is important that emotions embedded in everyday cross-boundary collaboration are recognized and taken into account in order to ensure the success of integrated care.Peer reviewe

Uudistuva sosiaali- ja terveysala

Tämä tutkimukseen perustuva kokoomateos tarjoaa selkeän, monipuolisen ja käytännönläheisen yleiskatsauksen siitä, mihin suuntaan suomalainen sosiaali- ja terveysala on kehittymässä 2020-luvulla. Sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollon uudistus on jälleen hyvin ajankohtainen, kun keväällä 2019 kariutuneen uudistuksen perustalle ollaan rakentamassa uudenlaisia hyvinvointialueita tai sote-maakuntia ja monialaisia sosiaali- ja terveyskeskuksia. Kirjassa avataan monipuolisesti maamme sosiaali- ja terveyspalvelujen uudistumista kolmesta eri näkökulmasta. Teoksen ensimmäisessä osassa tarkastellaan sosiaali- ja terveysalaa makrotason eli palvelujärjestelmän uudistumisen näkökulmasta. Artikkelien aiheina ovat historiallinen katsaus aiempiin uudistuksiin, integraatio sekä vaikuttavuuden ja kustannusvaikuttavuuden tutkimus. Private landowners and protected species : What sort of noncompliance should we be worried about?

Species protection legislation has been used as one of the main approaches in conservation - yet in many cases we know only little about the effectiveness and side-effects of such regulation. Noncompliance can limit effectiveness of legislative protection, and deliberate harmful actions by landowners have sometimes been reported as a response to restrictions. We studied attitudes of 186 Finnish forest owners toward the protection of Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans - a species which is protected according to the European Union Habitats Directive and is a well-known example for species protection in Finland. We explored the attitudes and claims of harming protected species by comparing the responses of persons with and without direct experience of legal protection by structural equation modelling. We found that experience did not explain forest owners' attitudes toward having the species in their forest. Claims of harming protected species were connected to policy attitudes and should be interpreted as a political phenomenon: they reflect political discourse on conservation policy and are a part of debate between stakeholders. Accidental and reckless noncompliance seem more important phenomena than intentional harming, especially as the chance in Finnish Nature conservation likely Act likely affects information of nest sites on logging areas. Ulkonäkö, ikääntyminen ja työelämä

Artikkelin tavoitteena on avata keskustelua ulkonäön ja työelämän välisestä yhteydestä aikaisemman tutkimustiedon ja kuusikymmentävuotiaisiin kohdistuvan kyselytutkimuksen avulla. Tarkasteluissa kiinnostus kohdistuu siihen, miten kuusikymmentävuotiaat suhtautuvat ulkonäköönsä. Tutkimme ulkonäköön panostamista työelämäosallisuuden, ammattiryhmien ja sukupuolen näkökulmista. Tutkimus hyödyntää Ikääntyminen ja hyvinvointi Pohjois-Savossa (IKIPOSA) -kyselyaineistoa vuodelta 2012. Aineistona ovat vuonna 1952 syntyneiden pohjoissavolaisten vastaukset (n=1515). Tulosten perusteella etenkin naiset kokevat riittämättömyyttä ulkonäkönsä suhteen ja he myös panostavat ulkonäköönsä. Tämä tutkimus  nosti myös esille, että eri työelämätilanteissa ja ammattiryhmissä olevien naisten suhtautuminen ulkonäköön painottuu eri tavoin. Kokopäivätyö vaikutti positiivisesti, kun taas työkyvyttömyys- ja työttömyyseläke vaikuttivat negatiivisesti naisten kokemaan ulkonäkötyytyväisyyteen. Ammattiryhmittäin tarkasteltuna johtavassa asemassa olevat naiset olivat muita naisia tyytymättömämpiä ulkonäköönsä
