Are the High-growth Recovery Periods Over?

We present evidence about the loss of the so-called ?plucking effect?, that is, a high-growth phase of the cycle typically observed at the end of recessions. This result matches the popular belief, presented informally by different authors, that the current recession will have permanent effects, or that the current recession will have an L shape versus the old-time recessions that have always had a V shape. Furthermore, we show that the loss of the ?plucking effect? can explain part of the Great Moderation. We postulate that these two phenomena may be due to changes in inventory management brought about by improvements in information and communications technologies.Business cycle characteristics, Great Moderation, High-growth recovery

Quantification of phase content in TiO2 thin films by Raman spectroscopy

Recently, it has been reported that TiO2 with mixture of phases (anatase/rutile) exhibit higher photocatalytic activity than TiO2 with pure anatase phase. Therefore, the production and correct quantification of the ratio of phases becomes an important task. In this work, anatase TiO2 thin films were obtained by the DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique. TiO2 with mixture of phases (anatase/rutile) were prepared by thermal annealing of the as-deposited thin films. The value of the anatase/rutile ratio in the titanium dioxide thin films was estimated using Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, it is reported the dependence of the bandgap of the TiO2 thin films as a function of the anatase/rutile ratio. The band gap of the TiO2 thin films was determined from diffuse reflectance measurements

Dificultades de los estudiantes en la interpretación de las soluciones de ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias que modelan un problema

En este trabajo se analizan algunas de las dificultades que surgen en el momento de interpretar las soluciones de una ecuación Diferencial Ordinaria (EDO) cuando se expresan en forma gráfica y algebraica. La investigación se llevó a cabo con estudiantes de ingeniería que estaban al final de un primer curso de EDO, los cuales realizaron varias actividades en un ambiente dinámico incluyendo algunas relacionadas con la interpretación de las soluciones representadas en forma algebraica y gráfica de una EDO que modela el comportamiento de una población. Se encontró que, aun cuando los estudiantes dominaban algunas herramientas algebraicas para resolver una EDO, no las utilizaban para interpretar el comportamiento de las soluciones dentro del registro gráfico. Además, al trabajar con el campo de direcciones para obtener información sobre las soluciones de la EDO su uso fue sólo local, esto es, centraron su atención en regiones relativamente pequeñas del campo de direcciones.In this work we analyzed some of the difficulties that arise when the student interpret the solutions of Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) when they are expressed in graphical and algebraic form. The investigation was carried out with Engineering students who were at the end of a first course of ODE, who realized some activities in a graphical dynamic environment that included the interpretation of the solutions represented in algebraic and graphic form of a ODE that models the behavior of a population. One the one hand, even though the students dominated some algebraic tools to solve a ODE, they did not use them to interpret the behavior of the solutions within the graphical registry. On the other hand, when they working with the field of directions to obtain data on the solutions of the ODE its use was only local, that is to say, focused its attention on relatively small regions of the field of directions

Relaçâo entre os conhecimentos inicias da linguagem escrita e a aprendizagem da leitura no final do 1º ano de escolaridade

Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada ao ISPA - Instituto UniversitárioO objectivo desta investigação foi verificar se existe uma relação entre os conhecimentos iniciais sobre linguagem escrita à entrada do ensino formal e os resultados alcançados nas várias componentes da leitura no final do 1º ano de escolaridade. Os participantes do estudo foram 19 crianças que frequentaram pela primeira vez o 1º ano de escolaridade. Este estudo inclui dois momentos de avaliação: no inicio do ano lectivo foram aplicados seis instrumentos para avaliar os conhecimentos iniciais sobre a linguagem escrita (Conhecimento do Nome e Som das Letras, Escrita Inventada, Teste de Linguagem Técnica e Linguagem Escrita, Subteste de Reflexão Morfo-Sintáctica e a Bateria de Provas de Consciência Fonológica) e no final do ano lectivo foi aplicada a prova de leitura que avalia três componentes da leitura (Leitura oral, Selecção ortográfica e Leitura compreensiva). Observou-se neste estudo que o Conhecimento do Nome e Som das Letras, a Escrita Inventada, a Consciência Sintáctica e a Consciência fonológica determinam diferentes relações com as componentes da leitura.ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present investigation is to determine whether there is a link between the initial knowledge about written language at the entry into formal education and achievements in the various components of reading at the end of 1st grade. Study participants were 19 children who attended for the first time a school year. This study includes two time points: at the beginning of the school year, six instruments were applied to assess the initial knowledge about written language (Letter name and latter sound knowledge; Invented Writing; Language Test Technique and Written Language; Morpho-Syntactic Subtest; Battery of Tests of Phonological Awareness) and the end of the school year was applied to the reading test that assesses three components of reading (Oral Reading; Spelling Words Selection; Reading Comprehension). We observed in this study that the Letter name and latter sound knowledge, Writing Invented, Syntactic Awareness and Phonological Awareness determine different relationships with the literacy component

Se ha comprobado empíricamente, que existen agregados monetarios que presentan velocidades ingreso de circulación relativamente más estables que la de M1, y se ha propuesto su utilización como nueva variable objetivo de la política monetaria. Sin embargo, no se conocen aún las relaciones de sustitución que existen entre el dinero y los diversos activos financieros, que dadas sus características de rendimiento y liquidez se han convertido en sustitutos cercanos de este activo.El propósito de este estudio es, por consiguiente, intentar establecer estas relaciones, estimando funciones de demanda por M1 y los activos financieros que constituyen en la actualidad alternativas atractivas de diversificación.
