Neutral carbon in the Egg Nebula (AFGL 2688)
A search for sub-mm C I emission from seven stars that are surrounded by dense molecular gas shells led to the detection, in the case of the "Egg Nebula' (AFGL 2688), of an 0.9 K line implying a C I/CO value greater than 5. The material surrounding this star must be extremely carbon-rich, and it is suggested that the apparently greater extent of the C I emission region may be due to the effects of the galactic UV field on the shell's chemistry, as suggested by Huggins and Glassgold (1982)
Oxidized Amino Acids in Lens Protein with Age: Measurement of o-Tyrosine and Dityrosine in the Aging Human Lens
The concentrations of ortho-tyrosine (o-Tyr) and dityrosine (DT) were measured in noncataractous human lenses in order to assess the role of proteinoxidation reactions in the aging of lens proteins. The measurements were conducted by selected ion monitoring-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using deuterium-labeled internal standards, which provided both high sensitivity and specificity for the quantitation of o-Tyr and DT. Between ages 1 and 78 years, the o-Tyr concentration in lens proteins varied from 0.3 to 0.9 mmol of o-Tyr/mol of Phe (n = 19), while DT ranged from 1 to 3 mumol of DT/mol of Tyr (n = 30). There were no significant changes in levels of o-Tyr with lens age. There was a statistically significant, but only slight, increase in DT in lens proteins with age (approximately 33% increases between ages 1 and 78, r = 0.5, p \u3c 0.01). At the same time, totalprotein fluorescence, measured at DT wavelengths (Ex = 317 nm, Em = 407 nm), increased 11-fold between ages 1 and 78 and correlated strongly with age (r = 0.82, p \u3c 0.0001). Although the fluorescence maxima of lens proteins were similar to those of DT, DT accounted for less than 1% of the DT-like fluorescence in lens protein at all ages. These observations indicate that oxidation of Phe and Tyr plays a limited role in the normal aging of lens proteins in vivo
Advanced stratified charge rotary aircraft engine design study
A technology base of new developments which offered potential benefits to a general aviation engine was compiled and ranked. Using design approaches selected from the ranked list, conceptual design studies were performed of an advanced and a highly advanced engine sized to provide 186/250 shaft Kw/HP under cruise conditions at 7620/25,000 m/ft altitude. These are turbocharged, direct-injected stratified charge engines intended for commercial introduction in the early 1990's. The engine descriptive data includes tables, curves, and drawings depicting configuration, performance, weights and sizes, heat rejection, ignition and fuel injection system descriptions, maintenance requirements, and scaling data for varying power. An engine-airframe integration study of the resulting engines in advanced airframes was performed on a comparative basis with current production type engines. The results show airplane performance, costs, noise & installation factors. The rotary-engined airplanes display substantial improvements over the baseline, including 30 to 35% lower fuel usage
Multiple Molecular H2 Outflows in AFGL 618
We report high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and high spectral (9 km/s) resolution
spectro-imaging of the 2.12 micron H2 1-0 S(1) line in the proto-planetary
nebula AFGL 618 using BEAR at the CFHT. The observations reveal the presence of
multiple, high-velocity, molecular outflows that align with the remarkable
optical jets seen in HST images. The structure and kinematics of the outflows
show how jets interact with circumstellar gas and shape the environment in

Radio continuum properties of young planetary nebulae
We have selected a small sample of post-AGB stars in transition towards the
planetary nebula and present new Very Large Array multi-frequency high-angular
resolution radio observations of them. The multi-frequency data are used to
create and model the targets' radio continuum spectra, proving that these stars
started their evolution as very young planetary nebulae. In the optically thin
range, the slopes are compatible with the expected spectral index (-0.1). Two
targets (IRAS 18062+2410 and 17423-1755) seem to be optically thick even at
high frequency, as observed in a handful of other post-AGB stars in the
literature, while a third one (IRAS 20462+3416) shows a possible contribution
from cold dust. In IRAS 18062+2410, where we have three observations spanning a
period of four years, we detect an increase in its flux density, similar to
that observed in CRL 618.
High-angular resolution imaging shows bipolar structures that may be due to
circumstellar tori, although a different hypothesis (i.e., jets) could also
explain the observations. Further observations and monitoring of these sources
will enable us to test the current evolutionary models of planetary nebulae.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
On the geometry of four qubit invariants
The geometry of four-qubit entanglement is investigated. We replace some of
the polynomial invariants for four-qubits introduced recently by new ones of
direct geometrical meaning. It is shown that these invariants describe four
points, six lines and four planes in complex projective space . For
the generic entanglement class of stochastic local operations and classical
communication they take a very simple form related to the elementary symmetric
polynomials in four complex variables. Moreover, their magnitudes are
entanglement monotones that fit nicely into the geometric set of -qubit ones
related to Grassmannians of -planes found recently. We also show that in
terms of these invariants the hyperdeterminant of order 24 in the four-qubit
amplitudes takes a more instructive form than the previously published
expressions available in the literature. Finally in order to understand two,
three and four-qubit entanglement in geometric terms we propose a unified
setting based on furnished with a fixed quadric.Comment: 19 page
Formation of o-Tyrosine and Dityrosine in Proteins during Radiolytic and Metal-catalyzed Oxidation
To evaluate their usefulness as chemical indicators of cumulative oxidative damage to proteins, we studied the kinetics and extent of formation of ortho-tyrosine (0-Tyr), dityrosine (DT), and dityrosine-like fluorescence (Ex = 3 17 nm, E,,, = 407 nm) in the model proteins RNase and lysozyme exposed to radiolytic and metalcatalyzed (H20z/Cu2+) oxidation (MCO). Although there were protein-dependent differences, o-Tyr, DT, and fluorescence increased coordinately during oxidation of the proteins in both oxidation systems. The contribution of DT to total dityrosine-like fluorescence in oxidized proteins varied from 2-10070, depending on the protein, type of oxidation, and extent of oxidative damage. In proteins exposed to MCO, DT typically accounted for \u3e50% of the fluorescence at DT wavelengths. These studies indicate that o-Tyr and DT should be useful chemical markers of cumulative exposure of proteins to MCO in vitro and in vivo
Jets and the shaping of the giant bipolar envelope of the planetary nebula KjPn 8
A hydrodynamic model involving cooling gas in the stagnation region of a
collimated outflow is proposed for the formation of the giant parsec-scale
bipolar envelope that surrounds the planetary nebula KjPn 8. Analytical
calculations and numerical simulations are presented to evaluate the model. The
envelope is considered to consist mainly of environmental gas swept-up by
shocks driven by an episodic, collimated, bipolar outflow. In this model, which
we call the ``free stagnation knot'' mechanism, the swept-up ambient gas
located in the stagnation region of the bow-shock cools to produce a high
density knot. This knot moves along with the bow-shock. When the central
outflow ceases, pressurization of the interior of the envelope stops and its
expansion slows down. The stagnation knot, however, has sufficient momentum to
propagate freely further along the axis, producing a distinct nose at the end
of the lobe. The model is found to successfully reproduce the peculiar shape

Analytical Estimate of the Critical Velocity for Vortex Pair Creation in Trapped Bose Condensates
We use a modified Thomas-Fermi approximation to estimate analytically the
critical velocity for the formation of vortices in harmonically trapped BEC. We
compare this analytical estimate to numerical calculations and to recent
