Simulated spaceflight effects on mating and pregnancy of rats
The mating of rats was studied to determine the effects of: simulated reentry stresses at known stages of pregnancy, and full flight simulation, consisting of sequential launch stresses, group housing, mating opportunity, diet, simulated reentry, and postreentry isolation of male and female rats. Uterine contents, adrenal mass and abdominal fat as a proportion of body mass, duration of pregnancy, and number and sex of offspring were studied. It is found that: (1) parturition following full flight simulation was delayed relative to that of controls; (2) litter size was reduced and resorptions increased compared with previous matings in the same group of animals; and (3) abdominal fat was highly elevated in animals that were fed the Soviet paste diet. It is suggested that the combined effects of diet, stress, spacecraft environment, and weightlessness decreased the probability of mating or of viable pregnancies in the Cosmos 1129 flight and control animals
Phases of the excitonic condensate in two-layer graphene
Two graphene monolayers that are oppositely charged and placed close to each
other are considered. Taking into account valley and spin degeneracy of
electrons we analyze the symmetry of the excitonic insulator states in such a
system and build a phase diagram that takes into account the effect of the
symmetry breaking due to the external in-plane magnetic field and the carrier

Properties of Intercalated 2H-NbSe2, 4Hb-TaS2 and 1T-TaS2
The layered compounds 2H-NbSe, 24Hb-TaS, 2and 1T-TaS2 have been intercalated with organic molecules; and the resulting crystal structure, heat capacity, conductivity, and superconductivity have been studied. The coordination in the disulfide layers was found to be unchanged in the product phase. Resistance minima appear and the superconducting transition temperature is reduced in the NbSe2 complex. Conversely, superconductivity is induced in the 4Hb-TaS2 complex. Corresponding evidence of a large change of the density of states, negative for 2H-NbSe2 and positive for 4Hb-TaS2, was also observed upon intercalation. The transport properties of all the intercalation complexes show a pronounced dependence upon the coordination of the transition metal
Effects of disorder in location and size of fence barriers on molecular motion in cell membranes
The effect of disorder in the energetic heights and in the physical locations
of fence barriers encountered by transmembrane molecules such as proteins and
lipids in their motion in cell membranes is studied theoretically. The
investigation takes as its starting point a recent analysis of a periodic
system with constant distances between barriers and constant values of barrier
heights, and employs effective medium theory to treat the disorder. The
calculations make possible, in principle, the extraction of confinement
parameters such as mean compartment sizes and mean intercompartmental
transition rates from experimentally reported published observations. The
analysis should be helpful both as an unusual application of effective medium
theory and as an investigation of observed molecular movements in cell

Two-Channel Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Processes
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes, consisting of two coupled
parallel lattice chains with particles interacting with hard-core exclusion and
moving along the channels and between them, are considered. In the limit of
strong coupling between the channels, the particle currents, density profiles
and a phase diagram are calculated exactly by mapping the system into an
effective one-channel totally asymmetric exclusion model. For intermediate
couplings, a simple approximate theory, that describes the particle dynamics in
vertical clusters of two corresponding parallel sites exactly and neglects the
correlations between different vertical clusters, is developed. It is found
that, similarly to the case of one-channel totally asymmetric simple exclusion
processes, there are three stationary state phases, although the phase
boundaries and stationary properties strongly depend on inter-channel coupling.
An extensive computer Monte Carlo simulations fully support the theoretical

Molecular motion in cell membranes: analytic study of fence-hindered random walks
A theoretical calculation is presented to describe the confined motion of
transmembrane molecules in cell membranes. The study is analytic, based on
Master equations for the probability of the molecules moving as random walkers,
and leads to explicit usable solutions including expressions for the molecular
mean square displacement and effective diffusion constants. One outcome is a
detailed understanding of the dependence of the time variation of the mean
square displacement on the initial placement of the molecule within the
confined region. How to use the calculations is illustrated by extracting
(confinement) compartment sizes from experimentally reported published
observations from single particle tracking experiments on the diffusion of
gold-tagged G-protein coupled mu-opioid receptors in the normal rat kidney cell
membrane, and by further comparing the analytical results to observations on
the diffusion of phospholipids, also in normal rat kidney cells.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Refining the associations of the Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalogs
The Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) First Source Catalog (1FGL) was released
in February 2010 and the Fermi-LAT 2-Year Source Catalog (2FGL) appeared in
April 2012, based on data from 24 months of operation. Since their releases,
many follow up observations of unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGSs) were
performed and new procedures to associate gamma-ray sources with potential
counterparts at other wavelengths were developed. Here we review and
characterize all the associations as published in the 1FGL and 2FGL catalog on
the basis of multifrequency archival observations. In particular we located 177
spectra for the low-energy counterparts that were not listed in the previous
Fermi catalogs, and in addition we present new spectroscopic observations of 8
gamma-ray blazar candidates. Based on our investigations, we introduce a new
counterpart category of "candidate associations" and propose a refined
classification for the candidate low-energy counterparts of the Fermi sources.
We compare the 1FGL-assigned counterparts with those listed in the 2FGL to
determine which unassociated sources became associated in later releases of the
Fermi catalogs. We also search for potential counterparts to all the remaining
unassociated Fermi sources. Finally, we prepare a refined and merged list of
all the associations of the 1FGL plus 2FGL catalogs that includes 2219 unique
Fermi objects. This is the most comprehensive and systematic study of all the
associations collected for the gamma-ray sources available to date. We conclude
that 80% of the Fermi sources have at least one known plausible gamma-ray

Optical archival spectra of blazar candidates of uncertain type in the 3 Fermi Large Area Telescope Catalog
Despite the fact that blazars constitute the rarest class among active
galactic nuclei (AGNs) they are the largest known population of associated
-ray sources. Many of the -ray objects listed in the
Fermi-Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as blazar
candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), either because they show multifrequency
behaviour similar to blazars but lacking optical spectra in the literature, or
because the quality of such spectra is too low to confirm their nature. Here we
select, out of 585 BCUs in the 3FGL, 42 BCUs which we identify as probable
blazars by their WISE infrared colors and which also have optical spectra that
are available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and/or Six-Degree Field
Galaxy Survey Database (6dFGS). We confirm the blazar nature of all of the
sources. We furthermore conclude that 28 of them are BL Lacs, 8 are radio-loud
quasars with flat radio spectrum and 6 are BL Lac whose emission is dominated
by their host galaxy
