The efficacy of problem-solving treatments after deliberate self-harm: meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials with respect to depression, hopelessness and improvement in problems
Background. Brief problem-solving therapy is regarded as a pragmatic treatment for deliberate self-harm (DSH) patients. A recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating this approach indicated a trend towards reduced repetition of DSH but the pooled odds ratio was not statistically significant. We have now examined other important outcomes using this procedure, namely depression, hopelessness and improvement in problems.
Method. Six trials in which problem-solving therapy was compared with control treatment were identified from an extensive literature review of RCTs of treatments for DSH patients. Data concerning depression, hopelessness and improvement in problems were extracted. Where relevant statistical data (e.g. standard deviations) were missing these were imputed using various statistical methods. Results were pooled using meta-analytical procedures.
Results. At follow-up, patients who were offered problem-solving therapy had significantly greater improvement in scores for depression (standardized mean difference =[minus sign]0·36; 95% CI [minus sign]0·61 to [minus sign]0·11) and hopelessness (weighted mean difference =[minus sign]3·2; 95% CI [minus sign]4·0 to [minus sign]2·41), and significantly more reported improvement in their problems (odds ratio = 2·31; 95% CI 1·29 to 4·13), than patients who were in the control treatment groups.
Conclusions. Problem-solving therapy for DSH patients appears to produce better results than control treatment with regard to improvement in depression, hopelessness and problems. It is desirable that this finding is confirmed in a large trial, which will also allow adequate testing of the impact of this treatment on repetition of DSH
Lipopolysaccharide and toll-like receptor 4 in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts
Surgical attenuation of a congenital portosystemic shunt (CPSS) results in increased portal vein perfusion, liver growth and clinical improvement. Portal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is implicated in liver regeneration via toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 mediated cytokine activation. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with LPS in dogs with CPSS. Plasma LPS concentrations were measured in the peripheral and portal blood using a limulus amoebocyte lysate (LAL) assay.
LPS concentration was significantly greater in the portal blood compared to peripheral blood in dogs with CPSS (P = 0.046) and control dogs (P = 0.002). LPS concentrations in the peripheral (P = 0.012) and portal (P = 0.005) blood of dogs with CPSS were significantly greater than those of control dogs. The relative mRNA expression of cytokines and TLRs was measured in liver biopsies from dogs with CPSS using quantitative PCR. TLR4 expression significantly increased following partial CPSS attenuation (P = 0.020). TLR4 expression was significantly greater in dogs that tolerated complete CPSS attenuation (P = 0.011) and those with good portal blood flow on pre-attenuation (P = 0.004) and post-attenuation (P = 0.015) portovenography. Serum interleukin (IL)-6 concentration was measured using a canine specific ELISA and significantly increased 24 h following CPSS attenuation (P < 0.001). Portal LPS was increased in dogs with CPSS, consistent with decreased hepatic clearance. TLR4 mRNA expression was significantly associated with portal blood flow and increased following surgery. These findings support the concept that portal LPS delivery is important in the hepatic response to surgical attenuation. In this paper we tackle the crisis of political trust and public engagement with politics by investigating new methods and tools to watch and take part in televised political debates. The paper presents relevant research at the intersection of citizenship, technologies and government/democracy, and describes the motivation, requirements and design of Democratic Replay, an online interactive video replay platform that offers a persistent, customisable digital space for: (a) members of the public to express their views as they watch online videos of political events; and (b) enabling for a richer collective understanding of what goes on in these complex media events
Making the most of community energies:Three perspectives on grassroots innovation
Grassroots innovations for sustainability are attracting increasing policy attention. Drawing upon a wide range of empirical research into community energy in the UK, and taking recent support from national government as a case study, we apply three distinct analytical perspectives: strategic niche management; niche policy advocacy; and critical niches. Whilst the first and second perspectives appear to explain policy influence in grassroots innovation adequately, each also shuts out more transformational possibilities. We therefore argue that, if grassroots innovation is to realise its full potential, then we need to also pursue a third, critical niches perspective, and open up debate about more socially transformative pathways to sustainability
G_2 Domain Walls in M-theory
M-theory is considered in its low-energy limit on a G_2 manifold with
non-vanishing flux. Using the Killing spinor equations for linear flux, an
explicit set of first-order bosonic equations for supersymmetric solutions is
found. These solutions describe a warped product of a domain wall in
four-dimensional space-time and a deformed G_2 manifold. It is shown how these
domain walls arise from the perspective of the associated four-dimensional N=1
effective supergravity theories. We also discuss the inclusion of membrane and

The stellar metallicity distribution of disc galaxies and bulges in cosmological simulations
By means of high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky
Way-like disc galaxies, we conduct an analysis of the associated stellar
metallicity distribution functions (MDFs). After undertaking a kinematic
decomposition of each simulation into spheroid and disc sub-components, we
compare the predicted MDFs to those observed in the solar neighbourhood and the
Galactic bulge. The effects of the star formation density threshold are visible
in the star formation histories, which show a modulation in their behaviour
driven by the threshold. The derived MDFs show median metallicities lower by
0.2-0.3 dex than the MDF observed locally in the disc and in the Galactic
bulge. Possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy include the use of low
stellar yields and/or centrally-concentrated star formation. The dispersions
are larger than the one of the observed MDF; this could be due to simulated
discs being kinematically hotter relative to the Milky Way. The fraction of low
metallicity stars is largely overestimated, visible from the more negatively
skewed MDF with respect to the observational sample. For our fiducial Milky Way
analog, we study the metallicity distribution of the stars born "in situ"
relative to those formed via accretion (from disrupted satellites), and
demonstrate that this low-metallicity tail to the MDF is populated primarily by
accreted stars. Enhanced supernova and stellar radiation energy feedback to the
surrounding interstellar media of these pre-disrupted satellites is suggested

Bundles over Nearly-Kahler Homogeneous Spaces in Heterotic String Theory
We construct heterotic vacua based on six-dimensional nearly-Kahler
homogeneous manifolds and non-trivial vector bundles thereon. Our examples are
based on three specific group coset spaces. It is shown how to construct line
bundles over these spaces, compute their properties and build up vector bundles
consistent with supersymmetry and anomaly cancelation. It turns out that the
most interesting coset is . This space supports a large number of
vector bundles which lead to consistent heterotic vacua, some of them with

Intractable policy failure: the case of bovine TB and badgers
The failure to eliminate bovine TB from the English and Welsh cattle herd represents a long-term intractable policy failure. Cattle-to-cattle transmission of the disease has been underemphasised in the debate compared with transmission from badgers despite a contested evidence base. Archival evidence shows that mythical constructions of the badger have shaped the policy debate. Relevant evidence was incomplete and contested; alternative framings of the policy problem were polarised and difficult to reconcile; and this rendered normal techniques of stakeholder management through co-option and mediation of little assistance
M-theory Compactifications on Manifolds with G2 Structure
In this paper we study M-theory compactifications on manifolds of G2
structure. By computing the gravitino mass term in four dimensions we derive
the general form for the superpotential which appears in such compactifications
and show that beside the normal flux term there is a term which appears only
for non-minimal G2 structure. We further apply these results to
compactifications on manifolds with weak G2 holonomy and make a couple of
statements regarding the deformation space of such manifolds. Finally we show
that the superpotential derived from fermionic terms leads to the potential
that can be derived from the explicit compactification, thus strengthening the
conjectures we make about the space of deformations of manifolds with weak G2

Supersymmetric AdS(4) compactifications of IIA supergravity
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for N=1 compactifications of
(massive) IIA supergravity to AdS(4) in the language of SU(3) structures. We
find new solutions characterized by constant dilaton and nonzero fluxes for all
form fields. All fluxes are given in terms of the geometrical data of the
internal compact space. The latter is constrained to belong to a special class
