AVL based bus priority at traffic signals: a review of architectures and case study
Recent developments in technologies such as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and advanced control systems have stimulated new interest in bus priority facilities using traffic signals. The use of AVL systems has generated opportunities for implementing flexible bus-specific priority strategies according to performance. The extent of the opportunities available depends very much on the architecture of a bus priority system, including the location(s) of intelligence determining the priority level and its implementation, and the method of priority request to the traffic signal. These aspects are important from the point of view of bus priority performance, communication requirements and the cost of the system. This paper draws together and compares the various architectures currently being used for AVL-based bus priority, providing an overall review to supplement other papers which are usually concerned with individual systems. The paper reviews current bus priority systems used across Europe under five different architecture categories. The present bus priority architecture in London is then analysed in more detail as a case study. The paper concludes with a discussion of issues for this application, given the continuing advances in locations and communication technologies, and issues for the future
Nova light curves from the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) - II. The extended catalogue
We present the results from observing nine Galactic novae in eruption with the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) between 2004 and 2009. While many of these novae reached peak magnitudes that were either at or approaching the detection limits of SMEI, we were still able to produce light curves that in many cases contained more data at and around the initial rise, peak, and decline than those found in other variable star catalogs. For each nova, we obtained a peak time, maximum magnitude, and for several an estimate of the decline time (t2). Interestingly, although of lower quality than those found in Hounsell et al. (2010a), two of the light curves may indicate the presence of a pre-maximum halt. In addition the high cadence of the SMEI instrument has allowed the detection of low amplitude variations in at least one of the nova light curves
Psychology students’ perception of and engagement with feedback as a function of year of study
Undergraduate students’ perception of feedback and level of engagement with the feedback they receive have gained increasing attention in the educational literature recently to identify areas which require educators’ attention. However, research in this area has generally been based on limited self-selecting samples, and has not considered how students’ relationship with feedback may alter depending on their year of study. To address this, a survey measuring students’ views and practices regarding feedback was completed at a higher education institution by 447 first-, second- and third-year psychology students, representing 77% of the cohort. Findings revealed that third years responded more negatively in both areas than their first- and second-year counterparts, whose ratings on these aspects themselves were far from optimal. These findings highlight the need for early interventions to improve students’ perception of and engagement with feedback in the earlier years, and to prevent the recorded deterioration later on in the degree course
Investigating the Applicability of Upstream Detection Strategy at Pedestrian Signalised Crossings
In the UK, the Puffin crossing has provision to extend pedestrian green time for those who take longer to cross. However, even at such a pedestrian friendly facility, the traffic signal control is usually designed to minimise vehicle delay while providing the crossing facility. This situation is rather contrary to the current policies to encourage walking. It is this inequity that has prompted the need to re-examine the traffic control of signalised crossings to provide more benefit to both pedestrians and vehicles. In this context, this paper explores the possibility of implementing an Upstream Detection strategy at a Puffin crossing to provide a user friendly crossing. The study has been carried out by simulating a mid-block Puffin crossing for various detector distances and a number of combinations of pedestrian and traffic flows. This paper presents the simulation results and recommends the situations at which Upstream Detection would be suitable.</p
Graduate attributes: implications for higher education practice and policy: Introduction
The higher education landscape is shifting under neo-liberal forces that are increasingly aligning the goals of business, government and education. This shift is engendering debate around the world about the role of higher education institutions in producing employable graduates to feed national prosperity in the emerging knowledge economy. As this evolution continues, we need to consider how we enhance generic graduate capabilities as well as the disciplinary expertise of our undergraduate students. Our graduates should possess the knowledge, skills and values to enable them to cope with dynamic employment opportunities, but they must also understand, through the benefits and constraints of their disciplinary perspectives, who they are and how they might contribute positively to the heterogeneity they will encounter in their local, regional and global communities
Four years of Type Ia Supernovae Observed by TESS: Early Time Light Curve Shapes and Constraints on Companion Interaction Models
We present 307 Type Ia supernova (SN) light curves from the first four years
of the TESS mission. We use this sample to characterize the shapes of the early
time light curves, measure the rise times from first light to peak, and search
for companion star interactions. Using simulations, we show that light curves
must have noise 10% of the peak to avoid biases in the early time light
curve shape, restricting our quantitative analysis to 74 light curves. We find
that the mean power law index of the early time light curves is
1.83 0.57 and the mean rise time to peak is 15.7 3.5 days. We also
estimate the underlying population distribution and find a Gaussian component
with mean , width 0.34, and a tail extending to values less
than 1.0. We use model comparison techniques to test for the presence of
companion interactions. In contrast to recent results in the literature, we
find that the data can rarely distinguish between models with and without
companion interactions, and caution is needed when claiming detections of early
time flux excesses. Nevertheless, we find three high-quality SN light curves
that tentatively prefer the addition of a companion interaction model, but the
statistical evidence is not robust. We also find two SNe that disfavor the
addition of a companion interaction model to a curved power law model. Taking
the 74 SNe together, we calculate 3 upper limits on the presence of
companion signatures to control for orientation effects that can hide
companions in individual light curves. Our results rule out common progenitor
systems with companions having Roche lobe radii 31 R (99.9%
confidence level) and disfavor companions having Roche lobe radii 10
R (95% confidence level). Lastly, we discuss the implications of our
results for the intrinsic fraction of single degenerate progenitor systems.Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures, resubmitted to ApJ. Figure sets for all 307

Prostate cancer treated with brachytherapy; an exploratory study of dose-dependent biomarkers and quality of life
BACKGROUND: Low-dose-rate permanent prostate brachytherapy (PPB) is an attractive treatment option for patients with localised prostate cancer with excellent outcomes. As standard CT-based post-implant dosimetry often correlates poorly with late treatment-related toxicity, this exploratory (proof of concept) study was conducted to investigate correlations between radiation − induced DNA damage biomarker levels, and acute and late bowel, urinary, and sexual toxicity. METHODS: Twelve patients treated with (125)I PPB monotherapy (145Gy) for prostate cancer were included in this prospective study. Post-implant CT based dosimetry assessed the minimum dose encompassing 90% (D(90%)) of the whole prostate volume (global), sub-regions of the prostate (12 sectors) and the near maximum doses (D(0.1cc), D(2cc)) for the rectum and bladder. Six blood samples were collected from each patient; pre-treatment, 1 h (h), 4 h, 24 h post-implant, at 4 weeks (w) and at 3 months (m). DNA double strand breaks were investigated by staining the blood samples with immunofluorescence antibodies to γH2AX and 53BP1 proteins (γH2AX/53BP1). Patient self-scored quality of life from the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) were obtained at baseline, 1 m, 3 m, 6 m, 9 m, 1 year (y), 2y and 3y post-treatment. Spearman’s correlation coefficients were used to evaluate correlations between temporal changes in γH2AX/53BP1, dose and toxicity. RESULTS: The minimum follow up was 2 years. Population mean prostate D(90%) was 144.6 ± 12.1 Gy and rectal near maximum dose D(0.1cc) = 153.0 ± 30.8 Gy and D(2cc) = 62.7 ± 12.1 Gy and for the bladder D(0.1cc) = 123.1 ± 27.0 Gy and D(2cc) = 70.9 ± 11.9 Gy. Changes in EPIC scores from baseline showed high positive correlation between acute toxicity and late toxicity for both urinary and bowel symptoms. Increased production of γH2AX/53BP1 at 24 h relative to baseline positively correlated with late bowel symptoms. Overall, no correlations were observed between dose metrics (prostate global or sector doses) and γH2AX/53BP1 foci counts. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that a prompt increase in γH2AX/53BP1foci at 24 h post-implant relative to baseline may be a useful measure to assess elevated risk of late RT − related toxicities for PPB patients. A subsequent investigation recruiting a larger cohort of patients is warranted to verify our findings.
