    Demonstration of coherent emission from high-β\beta photonic crystal nanolasers at room temperature

    We report on lasing at room temperature and at telecommunications wavelength from photonic crystal nanocavities based on InAsP/InP quantum dots. Such laser cavities with a small modal volume and high quality factor display a high spontaneous emission coupling factor beta. Lasing is confirmed by measuring the second order autocorrelation function. A smooth transition from chaotic to coherent emission is observed, and coherent emission is obtained at 8 times the threshold power

    Trame écologique agropastorale du Massif central : de l’approche cartographique globale par grands types de milieux à une approche cartographique affinée des végétations agropastorales.

    Les milieux ouverts herbacés représentent sur l’ensemble du Massif central une composante majeure et une richesse en terme de biodiversité. Ces milieux sont hérités d’une longue pratique agropastorale à laquelle ils doivent leur maintien. L’évolution récente et rapide de cette pratique, se traduit par une perte massive de diversité végétale. L’objet de cette étude est de mettre au point une méthode d’inventaire et de suivi de ces milieux à l’aide d’images optiques THR et de données Lidar, applicable à de larges superficies. Cette recherche est portée par la fédération des parcs naturels du Massif central (IPAMAC). Trois territoires expérimentaux (zones de 3000 ha) et représentatifs de la diversité du Massif central ont été définis : les Monts du Forez (secteur cristallin), le Massif du Sancy et du Cézallier (secteur volcanique) et le Causse noir (secteur calcaire). Dans chacun de ces territoires, une cartographie de terrain des végétations a été menée par les conservatoires botaniques sur des zones-tests de 300 ha environ. Cette cartographie rassemble des informations phytosociologiques, physionomiques, environnementales et sur les pratiques agropastorales, afin de prendre en compte les nombreux facteurs impactant l’information spectrale. Le choix des données image répond aux objectifs suivants : explorer les potentialités de la très haute résolution pour restituer le plus finement possible la diversité du tapis végétal et, suivre le développement phénologique des végétations à des dates différentes de la saison végétative.     Probing electron-phonon interaction through two-photon interference in resonantly driven semiconductor quantum dots

    We investigate the temperature dependence of photon coherence properties through two-photon interference (TPI) measurements from a single quantum dot (QD) under resonant excitation. We show that the loss of indistinguishability is related only to the electron-phonon coupling and is not affected by spectral diffusion. Through these measurements and a complementary microscopic theory, we identify two independent separate decoherence processes, both of which are associated with phonons. Below 10 K, we find that the relaxation of the vibrational lattice is the dominant contribution to the loss of TPI visibility. This process is non-Markovian in nature and corresponds to real phonon transitions resulting in a broad phonon sideband in the QD emission spectra. Above 10 K, virtual phonon transitions to higher lying excited states in the QD become the dominant dephasing mechanism, this leads to a broadening of the zero phonon line, and a corresponding rapid decay in the visibility. The microscopic theory we develop provides analytic expressions for the dephasing rates for both virtual phonon scattering and non-Markovian lattice relaxation

    Severe paraneoplastic hypoglycemia in a patient with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor with an exon 9 mutation: a case report

    BACKGROUND: Non-islet cell tumor induced hypoglycemia (NICTH) is a very rare phenomenon, but even more so in gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It tends to present in large or metastatic tumors, and can appear at any time in the progression of the disease. We present herein a case of NICTH in a GIST tumor and report an exon 9 mutation associated to it. CASE PRESENTATION: A thirty nine year-old man with a recurrent, metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor presented to the hospital with nausea, dizziness, loss of consciousness, and profound hypoglycemia (20 mg/dL). There was no evidence of factitious hypoglycemia. He was stabilized with a continuous glucose infusion and following selective vascular embolization, the patient underwent debulking of a multicentric 40 cm × 25 cm × 10 cm gastrointestinal stromal tumor. After resection, the patient became euglycemic and returned to his normal activities. Tumor analysis confirmed excessive production of insulin-like growth factor II m-RNA and the precursor protein, "big" insulin-like growth factor II. Mutational analysis also identified a rare, 6 bp tandem repeat insert (gcctat) at position 1530 in exon 9 of KIT. CONCLUSION: Optimal management of gastrointestinal stromal tumor-induced hypoglycemia requires a multidisciplinary approach, and surgical debulking is the treatment of choice to obtain immediate symptom relief. Imatinib or combinations of glucocorticoids and growth hormone are alternative palliative strategies for symptomatic hypoglycemia. In addition, mutations in exon 9 of the tyrosine kinase receptor KIT occur in 11–20% of GIST and are often associated with poor patient outcomes. The association of this KIT mutation with non-islet cell tumor induced hypoglycemia has yet to be established

    Use of radiolabelled choline as a pharmacodynamic marker for the signal transduction inhibitor geldanamycin

    There is an urgent need to develop non-invasive pharmacodynamic endpoints for the evaluation of new molecular therapeutics that inhibit signal transduction. We hypothesised that, when labelled appropriately, changes in choline kinetics could be used to assess geldanamycin pharmacodynamics, which involves inhibition of the HSP90 molecular chaperone→Raf1→Mitogenic Extracellular Kinase→Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1 and 2 signal transduction pathway. Towards identifying a potential pharmacodynamic marker response, we have studied radiolabelled choline metabolism in HT29 human colon carcinoma cells following treatment with geldanamycin. We studied the effects of geldanamycin, on net cellular accumulation of (methyl-14C)choline and (methyl-14C)phosphocholine production. In parallel experiments, the effects of geldanamycin on extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 phosphorylation and cell viability were also assessed. Additional validation studies were carried out with the mitogenic extracellular kinase inhibitor U0126 as a positive control; a cyclin-dependent kinase-2 inhibitor roscovitine and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002 as negative controls. Hemicholinium-3, an inhibitor of choline transport and choline kinase activity was included as an additional control. In exponentially growing HT29 cells, geldanamycin inhibited extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 phosphorylation in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. These changes were associated with a reduction in (methyl-14C)choline uptake, (methyl-14C) phosphocholine production and cell viability. Brief exposure to U0126, suppressed phosphocholine production to the same extent as Hemicholinium-3. In contrast to geldanamycin and U0126, which act upstream of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2, roscovitine and LY294002 failed to suppress phosphocholine production. Our results suggest that when labelled with carbon-11 isotope, (methyl-11C)choline may be a useful pharmacodynamic marker for the non-invasive evaluation of geldanamycin analogues
