Improved integration of multithreading into the STGM
variant of the Spineless Tagless G-Machine (STGM) which contains explicit
support for multithreading is introduced in [1]. The main design decisions are
the separation of demand for evaluation from case selection and the
introduction of an abstract notion of thread boundaries and thread
synchronisation. This report proposes an alternative solution which does not
separate demand from selection. Instead, case selections are extended by
additional alternatives which handle the appearance of long latency
operations. The overhead, necessary to control multithreading, is reduced and
sequentially evaluated parts of a program are more efficient
Optimal algorithms for global optimization in case of unknown Lipschitz constant
We consider a family of function classes which
allow functions with several minima and which
demand only Lipschitz continuity for smoothness.
We present an algorithm almost optimal for each of
these classes
A framework for multi-tier type evolution and data migration
This paper describes a framework that supports the simultaneous evolution of
objectoriented data models and relational schemas with respect to a tool-
supported object-relational mapping. Thereby the proposed framework accounts
for non-trivial data migration induced by type evolution from the outset. The
support for data migration is offered on the level of transparent data access.
The framework consists of the following integrated parts: an automatic model
change detection mechanism, a generator for schema evolution code and a
generator for data migration APIs. The framework has been concepted in the
IMIS project. IMIS is an information system for environmental radioactivity
measurements. Though the indicated domain especially demands a solution like
the one discussed in the paper, the achievements are of general purpose for
multi-tier system architectures with object-relational mapping
Detection of Counterfeit by the Usage of Product Inherent Features
AbstractOne aspect of the economical dimension of sustainable business development is the protection of high value products from counterfeiting. This holds especially true for consumer goods since the sustainable manufacturing process gains a more and more important role, e.g. in the creation of a brand image. In this paper we propose a method for detecting counterfeit by capture of inherent features indissolubly linked with the product induced by the production process itself. Since a counterfeiter gains margin by the use of inferior production processes and material the differences between genuine product and counterfeit can be captured in an automated fashion. The proposed method not only renders the application of artificial security tags obsolete which helps reducing the material usage but also gives enhanced protection against counterfeiting as the inherent characteristics cannot be removed from the article
probeBase—an online resource for rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes: new features 2007
probeBase is a curated database of annotated rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes and supporting information. Rapid access to probe, microarray and reference data is achieved by powerful search tools and via different lists that are based on selected categories such as functional or taxonomic properties of the target organism(s) or the hybridization format (fluorescence in situ hybridization or microarray) in which the probes were applied. Additional information on probe coverage and specificity is available through direct submissions of probe sequences from probeBase to RDP-II and Greengenes, two major rRNA sequence databases. A freely editable user comments field for each probe entry allows any user to add, modify or remove information or to report errors in real-time. probeBase entries increased from 700 to more than 1200 during the past three years. Several options for submission of single probes or entire probe sets, even prior to publication of newly developed probes, should further contribute to keeping probeBase an up-to-date and useful resource. probeBase is freely accessible at . Draft Genome Sequences of Chlamydiales Bacterium STE3 and Neochlamydia sp. Strain AcF84, Endosymbionts of Acanthamoeba spp.
Chlamydiales bacterium STE3 and Neochlamydia sp. strain AcF84 are obligate intracellular symbionts of Acanthamoeba spp. isolated from the biofilm of a littoral cave wall and gills from striped tiger leaf fish, respectively. We report the draft genome sequences of these two environmental chlamydiae affiliated with the family Parachlamydiaceae
Global optimization with unknown Lipschitz constant
We study the global optimization problem, i.e., for a real-valued and bounded function f we are interested in a point x of the domain whose function value f(x) is close to the infimum inf f. We consider the case that f is d-variate, Lipschitz, and, in a certain sense, does not increase too slowly in a neighborhood of the global minimizer(s). We give two contributions: We show that for an optimal method adaptiveness is necessary and that randomization (Monte Carlo) yields no further advantage. We present a method that is universal in the following sense: This algorithm has the optimal rate of
convergence even if neither the Lipschitz constant nor any other function parameter is known.
