    The moving-load problem in soil dynamics-the vertical displacement approximation

    The moving point load problem in soil dynamics is analyzed in the vertical particle displacement approximation. Prior to its motion, the load is stationary. From the instant at which it is set into motion it moves, with constant speed, along a straight path on the (horizontal) planar surface of a semi-infinite elastic medium. The modified Cagniard method for solving transient wave problems is used to determine closed-form expressions for the vertical component of the particle displacement from the elastodynamic wave equation of which only the vertical component is taken into account. The relevant approximation is standard in soil dynamics. Both the cases of "subsonic" and "supersonic" surface load speeds are considered. Methods to include losses in the model are briefly discussed. The study has been initiated with a view to the application of the results to the analysis of the ground motion generated by high-speed trains traveling on a poorly consolidated soil

    Processing prescriptively incorrect comparative particles: Evidence from sentence-matching and eye-tracking

    Speakers of a language sometimes use particular constructions which violate prescriptive grammar rules. Despite their prescriptive ungrammaticality, they can occur rather frequently. One such example is the comparative construction in Dutch and similarly in German, where the equative particle is used in comparative constructions instead of the prescriptively correct comparative particle (Dutch beter als Jan and German besser wie Jan ‘lit. better as John’). From a theoretical linguist’s point of view, these so-called grammatical norm violations are perfectly grammatical, even though they are not part of the language’s prescriptive grammar. In a series of three experiments using sentence-matching and eye-tracking methodology, we investigated whether grammatical norm violations are processed as truly grammatical, as truly ungrammatical, or whether they fall in between these two. We hypothesized that the latter would be the case. We analyzed our data using linear mixed effects models in order to capture possible individual differences. The results of the sentence-matching experiments, which were conducted in both Dutch and German, showed that the grammatical norm violation patterns with ungrammatical sentences in both languages. Our hypothesis was therefore not borne out. However, using the more sensitive eye-tracking method on Dutch speakers only, we found that the ungrammatical alternative leads to higher reading times than the grammatical norm violation. We also found significant individual variation regarding this very effect. We furthermore replicated the processing difference between the grammatical norm violation and the prescriptively correct variant. In summary, we conclude that while the results of the more sensitive eye-tracking experiment suggest that grammatical norm violations are not processed on a par with ungrammatical sentences, the results of all three experiments clearly show that grammatical norm violations cannot be considered grammatical, either

    Masculine generic pronouns as a gender cue in generic statements

    An eye-tracking experiment was conducted with speakers of Dutch (N = 84, 36 male), a language that falls between grammatical and natural-gender languages. We tested whether a masculine generic pronoun causes a male bias when used in generic statements—that is, in the absence of a specific referent. We tested two types of generic statements by varying conceptual number, hypothesizing that the pronoun zijn “his” was more likely to cause a male bias with a conceptually singular than a conceptually plural ante-cedent (e.g., Someone (conceptually singular)/Everyone (conceptually plural) with perfect pitch can tune his instrument quickly). We found male participants to exhibit a male bias but with the conceptually singular antecedent only. Female participants showed no signs of a male bias. The results show that the generically intended masculine pronoun zijn “his” leads to a male bias in conceptually singular generic contexts but that this further depends on participant gender

    Improving evidence on women’s groups: a proposed typology and common reporting indicators

    Women’s groups are a widely implemented and researched development intervention, particularly in South Asia and Africa. Groups encompass many models and aim to address a range of objectives. However, there is no consistent approach to describing their varied implementation models, which hinders the accurate interpretation of evidence and construct validity. Drawing from three recent evidence reviews and research experience with groups, we propose a typology and common reporting indicators to describe women’s groups. As large-scale investments in women’s groups grow, these tools can support the interpretation and transferability of evidence across models and settings

    Parameter identification in a semilinear hyperbolic system

    We consider the identification of a nonlinear friction law in a one-dimensional damped wave equation from additional boundary measurements. Well-posedness of the governing semilinear hyperbolic system is established via semigroup theory and contraction arguments. We then investigte the inverse problem of recovering the unknown nonlinear damping law from additional boundary measurements of the pressure drop along the pipe. This coefficient inverse problem is shown to be ill-posed and a variational regularization method is considered for its stable solution. We prove existence of minimizers for the Tikhonov functional and discuss the convergence of the regularized solutions under an approximate source condition. The meaning of this condition and some arguments for its validity are discussed in detail and numerical results are presented for illustration of the theoretical findings

    External Validation of Model-Based Dosing Guidelines for Vancomycin, Gentamicin, and Tobramycin in Critically Ill Neonates and Children: A Pragmatic Two-Center Study

    Background: The Dutch Pediatric Formulary (DPF) increasingly bases its guidelines on model-based dosing simulations from pharmacokinetic studies. This resulted in nationwide dose changes for vancomycin, gentamicin, and tobramycin in 2015. Objective: We aimed to evaluate target attainment of these altered, model-based doses in critically ill neonates and children. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric ICU (PICU) patients receiving vancomycin, gentamicin, or tobramycin between January 2015 and March 2017 in two university hospitals. The first therapeutic drug monitoring concentration for each patient was collected, as was clinical and dosing information. Vancomycin and tobramycin target trough concentrations were 10–15 and ≀ 1 mg/L, respectively. Target gentamicin trough and peak concentrations were < 1 and 8–12 mg/L, respectively. Results: In total, 482 patients were included (vancomycin [PICU] n = 62, [NICU] n = 102; gentamicin [NICU] n = 97; tobramycin [NICU] n = 221). Overall, median trough concentrations were within the target range for all cohorts but showed large interindividual variability, causing nontarget attainment. Trough concentrations were outside the target range in 66.1%, 60.8%, 14.7%, and 23.1% of patients in these four cohorts, respectively. Gentamicin peak concentrations were outside the range in 69% of NICU patients (term neonates 87.1%, preterm infants 57.1%). Higher creatinine concentrations were associated with higher vancomycin and tobramycin trough concentrations. Conclusion: This study illustrates the need to validate model-based dosing advice in the real-world setting as both sub- and supratherapeutic concentrations of vancomycin, gentamicin, and tobramycin were very prevalent. Our data underline the necessity for further individualization by addressing the high interindividual variability to improve target attainment

    The Risk of QTc-Interval Prolongation in Breast Cancer Patients Treated with Tamoxifen in Combination with Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

    Purpose: Antidepressants like the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) are often used concomitantly with tamoxifen (e.g. for treatment of depression). This may lead to an additional prolongation of the QTc-interval, with an increased risk of cardiac side effects. Therefore we investigated whether there is a drug-drug interaction between tamoxifen and SRIs resulting in a prolonged QTc-interval. Methods: Electrocardiograms (ECGs) of 100 patients were collected at steady state tamoxifen treatment, with or without concomitant SRI co-medication. QTc-interval was manually measured and calculated using the Fridericia formula. Primary outcome was difference in QTc-interval between tamoxifen monotherapy and tamoxifen concomitantly with an SRI. Results: The mean QTc-interval was 12.4 ms longer when tamoxifen was given concomitantly with an SRI (95% CI:1.8–23.1 ms; P = 0.023). Prolongation of the QTc-interval was particularly pronounced for paroxetine (17.2 ms; 95%CI:1.4–33.0 ms; P = 0.04), escitalopram (12.5 ms; 95%CI:4.4–20.6 ms; P 500 ms. Conclusions: Concomitant use of tamoxifen and SRIs resulted in a significantly higher mean QTc-interval, which was especially the case for paroxetine, escitalopram and citalopram.
