Empowering and assisting natural human mobility: The simbiosis walker
This paper presents the complete development of the Simbiosis Smart Walker. The device is equipped with a set of sensor subsystems to acquire user-machine interaction forces and the temporal evolution of user's feet during gait. The authors present an adaptive filtering technique used for the identification and separation of different components found on the human-machine interaction forces. This technique allowed isolating the components related with the navigational commands and developing a Fuzzy logic controller to guide the device. The Smart Walker was clinically validated at the Spinal Cord Injury Hospital of Toledo - Spain, presenting great acceptability by spinal chord injury patients and clinical staf
Deconvolution with correct sampling
A new method for improving the resolution of astronomical images is
presented. It is based on the principle that sampled data cannot be fully
deconvolved without violating the sampling theorem. Thus, the sampled image
should not be deconvolved by the total Point Spread Function, but by a narrower
function chosen so that the resolution of the deconvolved image is compatible
with the adopted sampling. Our deconvolution method gives results which are, in
at least some cases, superior to those of other commonly used techniques: in
particular, it does not produce ringing around point sources superimposed on a
smooth background. Moreover, it allows to perform accurate astrometry and
photometry of crowded fields. These improvements are a consequence of both the
correct treatment of sampling and the recognition that the most probable
astronomical image is not a flat one. The method is also well adapted to the
optimal combination of different images of the same object, as can be obtained,

Navigating implementation dilemmas in technology-forcing policies: a comparative analysis of accelerated smart meter diffusion in the Netherlands, UK, Norway, and Portugal (2000-2019)
This paper addresses the implementation of technology-forcing policies in open-ended diffusion processes that involve companies and regulators as well as consumers and civil society actors. Mobilising insights from the societal embedding of technology framework and policy steering theories, we investigate two implementation dilemmas that relate to an overarching tension between flexibility (to enable technological learning and stakeholder engagement) and coordinated push (to focus actors and drive deployment): a) early or late formulation of initial targets, and b) technocratic or emergent-adaptive implementation styles. We investigate these dilemmas with four comparative case studies of smart electricity meters between 2000 to 2019, which diffused rapidly in the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal, but decelerated in the UK. We relate these differences to policy choices, and identify two patterns for successful implementation of technology-forcing policies: a) start with early targets and a technocratic style, but make adjustments if there are substantial protests or technical problems, and b) start with an emergent-adaptive style and formulate and enforce targets later, once technical and social stabilisation has occurred
The Hubble Legacy Archive NICMOS Grism Data
The Hubble Legacy Archive (HLA) aims to create calibrated science data from
the Hubble Space Telescope archive and make them accessible via user-friendly
and Virtual Observatory (VO) compatible interfaces. It is a collaboration
between the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), the Canadian Astronomy
Data Centre (CADC) and the Space Telescope - European Coordinating Facility
(ST-ECF). Data produced by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) instruments with
slitless spectroscopy modes are among the most difficult to extract and
exploit. As part of the HLA project, the ST-ECF aims to provide calibrated
spectra for objects observed with these HST slitless modes. In this paper, we
present the HLA NICMOS G141 grism spectra. We describe in detail the
calibration, data reduction and spectrum extraction methods used to produce the
extracted spectra. The quality of the extracted spectra and associated direct
images is demonstrated through comparison with near-IR imaging catalogues and
existing near-IR spectroscopy. The output data products and their associated
metadata are publicly available through a web form at http://hla.stecf.org and
via VO interfaces. In total, 2470 spectra of 1923 unique targets are included

Genetic cartography of longevity in humans and mice: Current landscape and horizons.
Aging is a complex and highly variable process. Heritability of longevity among humans and other species is low, and this finding has given rise to the idea that it may be futile to search for DNA variants that modulate aging. We argue that the problem in mapping longevity genes is mainly one of low power and the genetic and environmental complexity of aging. In this review we highlight progress made in mapping genes and molecular networks associated with longevity, paying special attention to work in mice and humans. We summarize 40years of linkage studies using murine cohorts and 15years of studies in human populations that have exploited candidate gene and genome-wide association methods. A small but growing number of gene variants contribute to known longevity mechanisms, but a much larger set have unknown functions. We outline these and other challenges and suggest some possible solutions, including more intense collaboration between research communities that use model organisms and human cohorts. Once hundreds of gene variants have been linked to differences in longevity in mammals, it will become feasible to systematically explore gene-by-environmental interactions, dissect mechanisms with more assurance, and evaluate the roles of epistasis and epigenetics in aging. Quantum tunneling as a classical anomaly
Classical mechanics is a singular theory in that real-energy classical
particles can never enter classically forbidden regions. However, if one
regulates classical mechanics by allowing the energy E of a particle to be
complex, the particle exhibits quantum-like behavior: Complex-energy classical
particles can travel between classically allowed regions separated by potential
barriers. When Im(E) -> 0, the classical tunneling probabilities persist.
Hence, one can interpret quantum tunneling as an anomaly. A numerical
comparison of complex classical tunneling probabilities with quantum tunneling
probabilities leads to the conjecture that as ReE increases, complex classical
tunneling probabilities approach the corresponding quantum probabilities. Thus,
this work attempts to generalize the Bohr correspondence principle from
classically allowed to classically forbidden regions.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Observation of a low-lying neutron-unbound state in 19C
Proton removal reactions from a secondary 22N beam were utilized to populate
unbound states in neutron-rich carbon isotopes. Neutrons were measured with the
Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) in coincidence with carbon fragments. A resonance
with a decay energy of 76(14) keV was observed in the system 18C+n
corresponding to a state in 19C at an excitation energy of 653(95)keV. This
resonance could correspond to the first 5/2+ state which was recently
speculated to be unbound in order to describe 1n and 2n removal cross section

The first multi-wavelength campaign of AXP 4U 0142+61 from radio to hard X-rays
For the first time a quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign has been
performed on an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar from the radio to the hard X-ray band.
4U 0142+61 was an INTEGRAL target for 1 Ms in July 2005. During these
observations it was also observed in the X-ray band with Swift and RXTE, in the
optical and NIR with Gemini North and in the radio with the WSRT. In this paper
we present the source-energy distribution. The spectral results obtained in the
individual wave bands do not connect smoothly; apparently components of
different origin contribute to the total spectrum. Remarkable is that the
INTEGRAL hard X-ray spectrum (power-law index 0.79 +/- 0.10) is now measured up
to an energy of ~230 keV with no indication of a spectral break. Extrapolation
of the INTEGRAL power-law spectrum to lower energies passes orders of magnitude
underneath the NIR and optical fluxes, as well as the low ~30 microJy (2 sigma)
