The duality diagram in data analysis: Examples of modern applications

Today's data-heavy research environment requires the integration of different sources of information into structured data sets that can not be analyzed as simple matrices. We introduce an old technique, known in the European data analyses circles as the Duality Diagram Approach, put to new uses through the use of a variety of metrics and ways of combining different diagrams together. This issue of the Annals of Applied Statistics contains contemporary examples of how this approach provides solutions to hard problems in data integration. We present here the genesis of the technique and how it can be seen as a precursor of the modern kernel based approaches.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/10-AOAS408 the Annals of Applied Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aoas/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Singularities of the biextension metric for families of abelian varieties

    Get PDF
In this paper we study the singularities of the invariant metric of the Poincar\'e bundle over a family of abelian varieties and their duals over a base of arbitrary dimension. As an application of this study we prove the effectiveness of the height jump divisors for families of pointed abelian varieties. The effectiveness of the height jump divisor was conjectured by Hain in the more general case of variations of polarized Hodge structures of weight −1-1.Comment: 54 pages, accepted for publication in Forum Math. EnsembleSVM: A Library for Ensemble Learning Using Support Vector Machines

EnsembleSVM is a free software package containing efficient routines to perform ensemble learning with support vector machine (SVM) base models. It currently offers ensemble methods based on binary SVM models. Our implementation avoids duplicate storage and evaluation of support vectors which are shared between constituent models. Experimental results show that using ensemble approaches can drastically reduce training complexity while maintaining high predictive accuracy. The EnsembleSVM software package is freely available online at http://esat.kuleuven.be/stadius/ensemblesvm.Comment: 5 pages, 1 tabl

The implicit relational assessment procedure: emerging reliability and validity data

    Get PDF
The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) is a measure of ‘implicit cognition' developed on the basis of a contemporary behavioural analysis of language and cognition. The IRAP has now been applied to a range of foci over five years of published research. A frequently-cited caveat in publications to date is the need for further research to gauge the reliability and validity of the IRAP as an implicit measure. This review paper will provide a critical synthesis of available evidence for reliability and validity. The review applies a multifaceted test-theory approach to validity, and reliability is assessed through meta-analysis of published data. The discussion critically considers reviewed IRAP evidence with reference to the extant literature on alternative implicit measures, limitations of studies to date, and consideration of broader conceptual issues

Trace-element and stable-isotope composition of the Cyprideis torosa (Crustacea, Ostracoda) shell

Shells of Cyprideis, a widespread euryhaline ostracod, have commonly been used in geochemical investigations involving determinations of trace elements (especially magnesium and strontium) and isotopes (of oxygen, carbon and strontium). In this paper, we evaluate geochemical signatures in Cyprideis based on new and previously published data. Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca determinations of fossil shells that calcified in marine-type water have potential to reconstruct palaeotemperature and past water composition using empirical relationships derived from living ostracods recovered from in vitro cultures or natural settings. For shells that calcified in non-marine waters of contrasting composition, partitioning of trace metals from water into ostracod shells may differ, meaning that relationships developed for marine waters do not apply. However, variations in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca in Cyprideis in continental settings may still provide valuable palaeohydrological information. Determinations of oxygen isotopes in Cyprideis shells are consistent with positive offsets from equilibrium, in common with other ostracod taxa: carbon-isotope values reflect the fact that Cyprideis is a detritivore. Oxygen-isotope analyses of Cyprideis shells from continental settings provide important palaeohydrological information. Strontium-isotope analyses of Cyprideis shells provide valuable records of mixing of marine and continental water in marginal-marine settings. Geochemical analyses of different morphotypes of Cyprideis lend support to suggestions that ecophenotypic variations are controlled by factors other than, or additional to, salinity

Slow dynamics in a turbulent von K\'arm\'an swirling flow

    Get PDF
We present an experimental study of a turbulent von K\'arm\'an flow produced in a cylindrical container using two propellers. The mean flow is stationary up to Re=104Re = 10^4, where a bifurcation takes place. The new regime breaks some symmetries of the problem, and is time-dependent. The axisymmetry is broken by the presence of equatorial vortices with a precession movement, being the velocity of the vortices proportional to the Reynolds number. The reflection symmetry through the equatorial plane is broken, and the shear layer of the mean flow appears displaced from the equator. These two facts appear simultaneously. In the exact counterrotating case, a bistable regime appears between both mirrored solutions and spontaneous reversals of the azimuthal velocity are registered. This evolution can be explained using a three-well potential model with additive noise. A regime of forced periodic response is observed when a very weak input signal is applied.Comment: Improved model, additional results and figures, accepted in PR
