    In this paper we analyze the normal forms of a general quadratic Hamiltonian system defined on the dual of the Lie algebra o(K)\mathfrak{o}(K) of real KK - skew - symmetric matrices, where KK is an arbitrary 3×33\times 3 real symmetric matrix. A consequence of the main results is that any first-order autonomous three-dimensional differential equation possessing two independent quadratic constants of motion which admits a positive/negative definite linear combination, is affinely equivalent to the classical "relaxed" free rigid body dynamics with linear controls.Comment: 12 page

    Continuous and discrete Clebsch variational principles

    The Clebsch method provides a unifying approach for deriving variational principles for continuous and discrete dynamical systems where elements of a vector space are used to control dynamics on the cotangent bundle of a Lie group \emph{via} a velocity map. This paper proves a reduction theorem which states that the canonical variables on the Lie group can be eliminated, if and only if the velocity map is a Lie algebra action, thereby producing the Euler-Poincar\'e (EP) equation for the vector space variables. In this case, the map from the canonical variables on the Lie group to the vector space is the standard momentum map defined using the diamond operator. We apply the Clebsch method in examples of the rotating rigid body and the incompressible Euler equations. Along the way, we explain how singular solutions of the EP equation for the diffeomorphism group (EPDiff) arise as momentum maps in the Clebsch approach. In the case of finite dimensional Lie groups, the Clebsch variational principle is discretised to produce a variational integrator for the dynamical system. We obtain a discrete map from which the variables on the cotangent bundle of a Lie group may be eliminated to produce a discrete EP equation for elements of the vector space. We give an integrator for the rotating rigid body as an example. We also briefly discuss how to discretise infinite-dimensional Clebsch systems, so as to produce conservative numerical methods for fluid dynamics

    Ground state of two unlike charged colloids: An analogy with ionic bonding

    In this letter, we study the ground state of two spherical macroions of identical radius, but asymmetric bare charge ((Q_{A}>Q_{B})). Electroneutrality of the system is insured by the presence of the surrounding divalent counterions. Using Molecular Dynamics simulations within the framework of the primitive model, we show that the ground state of such a system consists of an overcharged and an undercharged colloid. For a given macroion separation the stability of these ionized-like states is a function of the difference ((\sqrt{N_{A}}-\sqrt{N_{B}})) of neutralizing counterions (N_{A}) and (N_{B}). Furthermore the degree of ionization, or equivalently, the degree of overcharging, is also governed by the distance separation of the macroions.     DALI and the persistence of protein shape

    DALI is a popular resource for comparing protein structures. The software is based on distance-matrix alignment. The associated web server provides tools to navigate, integrate and organize some data pushed out by genomics and structural genomics. The server has been running continuously for the past 25 years. Structural biologists routinely use DALI to compare a new structure against previously known protein structures. If significant similarities are discovered, it may indicate a distant homology, that is, that the structures are of shared origin. This may be significant in determining the molecular mechanisms, as these may remain very similar from a distant predecessor to the present day, for example, from the last common ancestor of humans and bacteria. Meta-analysis of independent reference-based evaluations of alignment accuracy and fold discrimination shows DALI at top rank in six out of 12 studies.     Spatiotemporal patterns and agro-ecological risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama Rot) in dogs in the UK

    Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease

    A GG-strand is a map g(t,s): R×R→Gg(t,{s}):\,\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}\to G for a Lie group GG that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of GG-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the GG-strand version of the rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin chain. Here, SO(3)KSO(3)_K-strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as an Euler-Poincar\'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the SO(3)KSO(3)_K-strand is mapped into a completely integrable generalization of the classical chiral model for the SO(3)-strand. Analogous results are obtained for the Sp(2)Sp(2)-strand. The Sp(2)Sp(2)-strand is the GG-strand version of the Sp(2)Sp(2) Bloch-Iserles ordinary differential equation, whose solutions exhibit dynamical sorting. Numerical solutions show nonlinear interactions of coherent wave-like solutions in both cases.     Onsager-Manning-Oosawa condensation phenomenon and the effect of salt

    Making use of results pertaining to Painleve III type equations, we revisit the celebrated Onsager-Manning-Oosawa condensation phenomenon for charged stiff linear polymers, in the mean-field approximation with salt. We obtain analytically the associated critical line charge density, and show that it is severely affected by finite salt effects, whereas previous results focused on the no salt limit. In addition, we obtain explicit expressions for the condensate thickness and the electric potential. The case of asymmetric electrolytes is also briefly addressed.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.     The 1981 outburst of the old nova GK Persei

    Old nova GK Per was observed in 1981 with the IUE, during its rise, maximum, and subsequent return to minimum. In outburst, GK Per is luminous but much redder than dwarf novae or standard model accretion disks. The observed spectrum can be explained qualitatively with the Ghosh and Lamb (1979) model for the interaction of an accretion disk with the magnetic field of the accreting white dwarf. The N V and He2 are enhanced relative to other emission lines during outburst. This can be understood with photoionization by very soft X-rays having a luminosity comparable to that of the hard X-rays
