    Darwin Meets Einstein: LISA Data Analysis Using Genetic Algorithms

    This work presents the first application of the method of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to data analysis for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In the low frequency regime of the LISA band there are expected to be tens of thousands galactic binary systems that will be emitting gravitational waves detectable by LISA. The challenge of parameter extraction of such a large number of sources in the LISA data stream requires a search method that can efficiently explore the large parameter spaces involved. As signals of many of these sources will overlap, a global search method is desired. GAs represent such a global search method for parameter extraction of multiple overlapping sources in the LISA data stream. We find that GAs are able to correctly extract source parameters for overlapping sources. Several optimizations of a basic GA are presented with results derived from applications of the GA searches to simulated LISA data.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure

    Instrumental neutron activation analysis of postclassic and historic-period pottery from Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico [abstract]

    Abstract only availableThe study involved utilizing Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) on 96 pottery samples from the post-classic Mayan (ca. 1000-1500 C.E.) and historic eras excavated from the Soconusco region of Southern Chiapas, Mexico. This was done in order to understand and map the long-distance trade networks of Mesoamerica via the unique chemical characteristics of pottery. The samples were irradiated according to MURR procedures and measured at specific intervals on a gamma-ray spectrometer to yield the relative concentration of elemental composition. The data obtained from the use of INAA has allowed for the creation of compositional groups according to the chemical signatures of the pottery. These groups were then compared with other compositional reference groups from throughout Mesoamerica accumulated within the MURR archives. The results indicate a complex and diverse trade relationship with post-classic pottery dominated by samples produced either locally or in the surrounding Chiapas, and historic pottery being imported across Mexico from Colonial New Spawn sites such as Puebla, Mexico City and perhaps as yet un-identified production centers. It is hoped that an increase in further comparative data will help in the locating of these additional pottery production centers. From these results, this study seeks to add greater depth to the discussion of inter-regional trade systems across Mesoamerica in both the post-classic and historic periods and enhance the conclusions drawn from those discussions

    Behavioral, Molecular, and Morphological Evidence for a Hybrid Zone between Chrysochus auratus and C. cobaltinus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

    In this article, we describe a hybrid zone between the chrysomelid beetles, Chrysochus auratus (F.), andC. cobaltinus LeConte, which have historically been considered as having allopatric distributions. By combining field studies with surveys of museum specimens, we documented that in western North America there are two regions in which these beetles are sympatric, and four additional regions in which populations of the two species are Washington, we found an ≈25 km wide area of sympatry in which the two species freely interbreed. Morphological and allozyme differences between the species allowed us to demonstrate that individuals with intermediate coloration in this area are indeed hybrids; all 22 putative hybrids we assayed for allozyme variation were heterozygous at each of three species-specific loci. Museum specimens revealed that the two species have been hybridizing in this region at least since 1952. Within the hybrid zone, ≈10-15% of the beetles is apparently F1 hybrids. At one focal site, 22.9% of all matings involved heterospecific pairs and 20.8% of all matings involved at least one hybrid individual. Although we found no molecular evidence of introgression between the two species, morphometric results and preliminary ecological data suggest possible past introgression or weak ongoing introgression. We discuss the implications of our findings for the specific status of these two species. This system appears well suited to provide answers to long-standing questions concerning the evolution of premating barriers between hybridizing species. In addition, hybridization between these two beetle species with differing host ranges will allow us to test the hypothesis that ecologically significant traits such as diet breadth can be gained via introgression

    Model sensitivity of the Weddell and Ross seas, Antarctica, to vertical mixing and freshwater forcing

    We examine the sensitivity of the Weddell and Ross seas to vertical mixing and surface freshwater forcing using an ocean–sea ice model. The high latitude Southern Ocean is very weakly stratified, with a winter salinity difference across the pycnocline of only ?0.2 PSU. We find that insufficient vertical mixing, freshwater supply from the Antarctic Ice Sheet, or initial sea ice causes a high salinity bias in the mixed layer which erodes the stratification and causes excessive deep convection. This leads to vertical homogenisation of the Weddell and Ross seas, opening of polynyas in the sea ice and unrealistic spin-up of the subpolar gyres and Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The model freshwater budget shows that a ?30% error in any component can destratify the ocean in about a decade. We find that freshwater forcing in the model should be sufficient along the Antarctic coastline to balance a salinity bias caused by dense coastal water that is unable to sink to the deep ocean. We also show that a low initial sea ice area introduces a salinity bias in the marginal ice zone. We demonstrate that vertical mixing, freshwater forcing and initial sea ice conditions need to be constrained simultaneously to reproduce the Southern Ocean hydrography, circulation and sea ice in a model. As an example, insufficient vertical mixing will cause excessive convection in the Weddell and Ross seas even in the presence of large surface freshwater forcing and initial sea ice cover

    Integrating psychosocial care into neuro-oncology: challenges and strategies

    Approximately 256,000 cases of malignant brain and nervous system cancer were diagnosed worldwide during 2012 and 189,000 deaths, with this burden falling more heavily in the developed world. Problematically, research describing the psychosocial needs of people with brain tumors and their carers and the development and evaluation of intervention models has lagged behind that of more common cancers. This may relate, at least in part, to poor survival outcomes and high morbidity associated with this illness, and stigma about this disease. The evidence base for the benefits of psychosocial care in oncology has supported the production of clinical practice guidelines across the globe over the past decade, with a recent mandate to integrate the psychosocial domain and measurement of distress into routine care. Clinical care guidelines for people with brain tumors have emerged, with a building focus on psychosocial and survivorship care. However, researchers will need to work intensively with health care providers to ensure future practice is evidence-based and able to be implemented across both acute and community settings and likely within existing resources

    BackgroundTebe, a T cell receptor fused to an anti-CD3 effector, can redirect T cells to target gp100+ cells and in Ph3, demonstrated overall survival (OS) benefit as monotherapy in metastatic uveal melanoma. In Ph2, any tumor shrinkage (44% of patients) was a better predictor of OS than response rate. In Ph1, Tebe had monotherapy activity in mCM, also a gp100+ tumor, with 1-year OS ~74% in PD-1 naïve mCM. A Ph1 dose escalation of tebe with durva (anti-PD-L1) and/or treme (anti-CTLA4) was conducted in pre-treated mCM [NCT02535078], with nearly all patients having prior PD1-treatment, and where recently reported therapies have 1-yr OS of ~55%.MethodsHeavily pre-treated HLA-A2+ mCM patients received weekly IV tebe alone (Arm 4) or with increasing doses of durva and/or treme (Arm 1–3) administered IV monthly starting day 15 of each cycle. Primary objective was to identify RP2D of combination therapy. Secondary objectives included adverse events (AE) and efficacy.Results112 pts received ≥1 tebe dose. Median age was 59, 77% were ECOG 0, and 37% were BRAFm (of which 71% received prior BRAFi/MEKi). 91% of pts were 2L+, while 74% were 3L+. 103 (92%) received prior PD-1 inhibitor, of which 87% also received prior ipilimumab. 43 pts received tebe + durva (Arm 1), 13 received tebe + treme (Arm 2), 29 received triplet therapy (Arm 3), and 27 received tebe alone (Arm 4). Maximum target doses of tebe (68 mcg) + durva (20 mg/kg) and treme (1 mg/kg) were tolerated. MTD was not formally identified for any arm. Two DLTs occurred: prolonged grade 3 rash (Arm 1) and grade 2 diarrhea leading to treatment delay (Arm 2). Related AEs that were Grade ≥3 or led to discontinuations were: 44%/0% (Arm 1), 23%/0% (Arm2), 38%/7% (Arm3), 26%/4% (Arm 4). There were no treatment-related deaths.In prior PD-1 pts, tumor shrinkage occurred in 36% and 1-yr OS was 68%. Of 51 evaluable PD-1 resistant pts (best response CR/PR/SD to prior PD1), tumor shrinkage occurred in 28% and 1-yr OS was 73% (figure 1). In 35 evaluable PD-1 refractory pts (prior best response PD), tumor shrinkage occurred in 49% and 1-yr OS was 61%.     Active surveillance to update county scale distribution of four tick species of medical and veterinary importance in Oklahoma

    The incidence of tick-borne disease continues to increase in humans and companion animals in the United States, yet distribution maps for several tick vectors in Oklahoma, including Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor albipictus, Ixodes scapularis, and Amblyomma maculatum, are not available or are outdated. To address this issue, county-scale tick records from peer-reviewed literature and passive collections were reviewed for Oklahoma. Additionally, dry ice traps, tick drags, and harvested deer were utilized to actively collect adult ticks throughout the state. Through these methods, D. variabilis, D. albipictus, I. scapularis, and A. maculatum were identified in 88% (68/77), 45.4% (35/77), 66.2% (51/77), and 64.9% (50/77) of the counties in Oklahoma, respectively. Baseline maps were developed for the distribution of D. variabilis and D. albipictus and distribution maps were updated for I. scapularis and A. maculatum. This data confirms that these four species of ticks continue to be widespread within Oklahoma with a western expansion of the range of I. scapularis within the state. These results assist efforts to better understand the epidemiology of the different diseases caused by pathogens transmitted by these tick species within the Great Plains region.Peer reviewedVeterinary PathobiologyEntomology and Plant Patholog

    County scale distribution of Amblyomma americanum (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Oklahoma: Addressing local deficits in tick maps based on passive reporting

    Geographic distribution records for the lone star tick [Amblyomma americanum (L.)] in the peer-reviewed literature are incomplete for Oklahoma, preventing accurate disease risk assessments. To address this issue and document the presence of A. americanum in available habitats throughout the state, county-scale tick records published in U.S. Department of Agriculture-Cooperative Economic Insect Reports and specimens maintained at the K.C. Emerson Entomology Museum, Oklahoma State University, were reviewed. In addition, dry ice traps and tick drags were used to collect adult and nymphal A. americanum from throughout the state. Review of published USDA reports and the local museum collection documented A. americanum in 49 total counties (35 and 35, respectively). Active surveillance efforts confirmed the presence of this tick in 50 counties from which this species had not been previously reported to be established, documenting A. americanum is established in 68 of the 77 (88.3%) counties in Oklahoma. Taken together, these data verify that A. americanum ticks are much more widespread in Oklahoma than reflected in the literature, a phenomenon likely repeated throughout the geographic range of this tick in the eastern half of North America.Peer reviewedEntomology and Plant PathologyVeterinary Pathobiolog
