Fortschritt zwischen Illusion und Störfall: Zur Antiquiertheit des Fortschrittsbegriffs in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher Transformation

Der Beitrag thematisiert aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven die Herkunft und Bedeutung des modernen Fortschrittsbegriffs sowie dessen Verengung auf seine rein technisch-ökonomische Seite. Dabei wird einerseits die historisch gewachsene Ambivalenz des Fortschrittsbegriffs nachgezeichnet, andererseits aber auch der Frage nachgegangen, ob eine solch semantische Engführung, die dauerhaft Glück und Zufriedenheit durch Wachstum, die Ökonomisierung aller Lebensbereiche und die Produktion von immer mehr materiellem Wohlstand hervorzubringen verspricht, sich am Ende nicht als Schimäre erweist. Übersehen werden im hellen Schein des Leuchtfeuers Fortschritt nämlich ganz offensichtlich zwei entscheidende Faktoren: zum einen die Tatsache, dass der Mensch sich in der Befriedigung seiner Leidenschaften durch Konsum nicht von den Bedingungen seines Zustandekommens in der Wettbewerbsgesellschaft abkoppeln kann; zum anderen das Faktum, dass der Glaube an den technisch-ökonomischen Fortschritt genau jenem System entspringt, das diesen Glauben als Bedingung seiner eigenen Existenz hervorgebracht hat: dem kapitalistisch-marktwirtschaftlichen Wirtschaftssystem und seiner Produktions- und Konsumweise, samt eingebauter Wachstumslogik.The essay focusses the origin and meaning of the modern term of progress as well as the limitation on its technical-economic dimension from different points of view. On the one hand it reconsiders the historically grown ambivalence in the understanding of progress; on the other hand it questions, if its semantic limitation, which promises sustainable happiness and satisfaction through growth, the economization of all areas of life and the production of everlasting material wealth, crystallizes as a chimera. As a matter of fact, this perspective ignores two crucial factors in its understanding of progress: firstly the fact, that humans, while satisfying their passions through consumption, cannot uncouple from the conditions of their formation within the competitive society; furthermore the fact, that the believe in technical-economic progress originates from the system, that produced this believe for its own existence: the capitalistic market economy and its mode of production and consumption, including its logic of economic growth. Corona und die Politik multipler Resonanzen

Die Corona-Krise hat, ganz anders als die ökologische Krise, umfangreiche, elementare und vom Bürger weitgehend akzeptierte politische, medizinische und mediale Maßnahmen und Reaktionen in Gang gebracht. Das ist erstaunlich, entspringen doch beide Krisen ein und derselben Ursache: einer konsumorientierten Lebensweise, die spätestens seit der Industrialisierung immer mehr zur zweiten Natur des Menschen geworden ist. Das wirft Fragen auf. Etwa die danach, warum vor allem politische und mediale Resonanzen auf die Krisen im Lichte ihrer Gleichursprünglichkeit so unterschiedlich ausfallen. Ob dies womöglich als Ausdruck der Tatsache zu deuten ist, dass zentrale gesellschaftliche Funktionssysteme den von ihnen selbst geschaffenen Leviathan Wachstum im Horizont einer immer radikaler vergesellschafteten Natur nicht mehr zu bändigen in der Lage sind. Und auch die danach, welche Fallstricke lauern, wollten sie dies überhaupt noch bewerkstelligen. Wenn, so die zentrale These, die ökologische Krise die Welt weitaus stärker bedroht als das Corona-Virus, dann sehen sich alle gesellschaftlichen Funktionssysteme künftig vermutlich mit Fragen sehr grundsätzlicher Art konfrontiert - und es wäre dann nicht nur die Perspektive auf das menschliche Naturverhältnis, sondern auch der Begriffsapparat zu wechseln. Different to the ecological crisis, the corona-crisis has induced extensive political, medical, and mass-media measures that are widely accepted by the general public. This is astonishing, because both crises arise from one and the same cause: a way of life, that is focused on consumption and that became a second nature of man since the beginning of industrialization. That raises questions. For example, why, political and media responses to the crises are so different considering their shared origin; or if this could be interpreted as an expression of the fact, that central social systems are no longer able to tame the leviathan „growth“ they have created themselves. Especially, in the context of an increasingly socialized nature. If the ecological crisis poses far more of a threat than the corona virus, then social systems will be confronted with fundamental questions in the future - and then it will probably not only be necessary to change the perspective on the human relationship to nature, but also to change the conceptual apparatus.  (editorial reviewed

Appropriateness of oral anticoagulants for long-term treatment of atrial fibrillation in older people: results of an evidence-based review and international consensus validation process (OAC-FORTA 2016)

Background: Age appropriateness of anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation is uncertain. Objective: To review oral anticoagulants for the treatment of atrial fibrillation in older (age >65 years) people and to classify appropriate and inappropriate drugs based on efficacy, safety and tolerability using the Fit-fOR-The-Aged (FORTA) classification. Methods: We performed a structured comprehensive review of controlled clinical trials and summaries of individual product characteristics to assess study and total patient numbers, quality of major outcome data and data of geriatric relevance. The resulting evidence was discussed in a round table with an interdisciplinary panel of ten European experts. Decisions on age appropriateness were made using a Delphi process. Results: For the eight drugs included, 380 citations were identified. The primary outcome results were reported in 32 clinical trials with explicit and relevant data on older people. Though over 24,000 patients aged >75/80 years were studied for warfarin, data on geriatric syndromes were rare (two studies reporting on frailty/falls/mental status) and missing for all other compounds. Apixaban was rated FORTA-A (highly beneficial). Other non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (including low/high-intensity dabigatran and high-intensity edoxaban) and warfarin were assigned to FORTA-B (beneficial). Phenprocoumon, acenocoumarol and fluindione were rated FORTA-C (questionable), mainly reflecting the absence of data. Conclusions: All non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants and warfarin were classified as beneficial or very beneficial in older persons (FORTA-A or -B), underlining the overall positive assessment of the risk/benefit ratio for these drugs. For other vitamin-K antagonists regionally used in Europe, the lack of evidence should challenge current practice

Protection from cytomegalovirus after transplantation is correlated with immediate early 1–specific CD8 T cells

T cells are crucial for the control of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in infected individuals. Although CMV-specific T cells can be quantified by various methods, clear correlates of protection from CMV disease have not been defined. However, responses to the pp65 protein are believed to play an important role. Here, the proportions of interferon γ–producing T cells following ex vivo activation with pools of overlapping peptides representing the pp65 and immediate early (IE)-1 proteins were determined at multiple time points and related to the development of CMV disease in 27 heart and lung transplant recipients. Frequencies of IE-1–specific CD8 T cells above 0.2 and 0.4% at day 0 and 2 wk, respectively, or 0.4% at any time during the first months discriminated patients who did not develop CMV disease from patients at risk, 50–60% of whom developed CMV disease. No similar distinction between risk groups was possible based on pp65-specific CD8 or CD4 T cell responses. Remarkably, CMV disease developed exclusively in patients with a dominant pp65-specific CD8 T cell response. In conclusion, high frequencies of IE-1 but not pp65-specific CD8 T cells correlate with protection from CMV disease. Die Verwobenheit von Sozialisation und Selektion. Eine kritische Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Sozialisation, Bildung und Erziehung

In dem Beitrag wird die Verwobenheit von Sozialisations- und Selektionsprozessen begriffsanalytisch nachgezeichnet. Herausgearbeitet wird, wie sich die Begriffe Sozialisation, Bildung und Erziehung aufeinander beziehen, welche normativen Konnotationen mit den Begriffen verbunden sind und wie sich ihr Bedeutungshorizont verändert. Dabei zeigt sich, wie Sozialisationsprozesse durch Selektionsprozesse überlagert werden und wie diese Überlagerung zu einer Engführung der Sozialisations-, Erziehungs- und Bildungsforschung führt. It becomes evident that the terms socialization and education become a normative bias in so far as they are interpreted in reference to their selective function in modern educational systems.
