    Digestion of Sand-Laden Manure Slurry in an Upflow Anaerobic Solids Removal (UASR) Digester

    Studies on the Performance of a Laboratory Scale Up flow Anaerobic Solids Removal (UASR) Digester Were Carried Out using Sand-Laden Cow Manure Slurries Having Total Solids (TS) Concentration as 50 and 100 G/l. Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) Was Maintained as 32.4 Days, Which Resulted in the Volatile Solids (VS) Loading Rates of 1 and 1.64 G/l D. the UASR System Was Designed to Remove Sand from the Manure Slurry, While Anaerobically Digesting Biodegradable Solids Inside a Single Reactor. to Enhance the Contact of Microorganisms and Substrate, the Liquor from the Top of the Digester Was Recirculated through the Bed of Settled Solids at its Bottom. Volatile Solids Reduction through This Process Was Observed to Be 62% and 68% in the Case of Feed Slurries Having TS Concentration as 50 and 100 G/l (Referred in the Text as 5% and 10% Feed Slurries), Respectively. the Methane Production Rates Were Observed to Be 0.22 and 0.38 L/l D, While Methane Yield Was 0.21 and 0.27 L CH4/g vs. Loaded, for 5% and 10% Feed Slurries, respectively. This Indicates that the Increase in the vs. Loading Had a Positive Impact on Methane Production Rate and Methane Yield. It Would Be of Interest to Study the Performance of a UASR Digester at Higher Solids Loadings and with Longer Solids Retention Times. Nonetheless, the Presented Study Showed that Sand-Laden Manure Slurries Can Be Successfully Digested in a UASR Digester Producing Methane Energy Equivalent to 4 KW H Per M3 of Digester Volume Per Day. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V

    The Impact of Conservation on the Status of the World\u27s Vertebrates

    Using data for 25,780 species categorized on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, we present an assessment of the status of the world\u27s vertebrates. One-fifth of species are classified as Threatened, and we show that this figure is increasing: On average, 52 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians move one category closer to extinction each year. However, this overall pattern conceals the impact of conservation successes, and we show that the rate of deterioration would have been at least one-fifth again as much in the absence of these. Nonetheless, current conservation efforts remain insufficient to offset the main drivers of biodiversity loss in these groups: agricultural expansion, logging, overexploitation, and invasive alien species

    Multimodality Treatment for Early-Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Bridging Therapy for Liver Transplantation

    Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of a multimodality approach consisting of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as bridging therapy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and to evaluate the histopathological response in explant specimens. Materials and Methods: Between April 2001 and November 2011, 36 patients with 50 HCC nodules (1.4-5.0 cm, median 2.8 cm) on the waiting list for liver transplantation were treated by TACE and RFA. The drop-out rate during the follow-up period was recorded. The local efficacy was evaluated by histopathological examination of the explanted livers. Results: During a median follow-up time of 29 (4.0-95.3) months the cumulative drop-out rate for the patients on the waiting list was 0, 2.8, 5.5, 11.0, 13.9 and 16.7% at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months, respectively. 16 patients (with 26 HCC lesions) out of 36(44.4%) were transplanted by the end of study with a median waiting list time of 13.7 (2.5-37.8) months. The histopathological examination of the explanted specimens revealed a complete necrosis in 20 of 26 HCCs (76.9%), whereas 6 (23.1%) nodules showed viable residual tumor tissue. All transplanted patients are alive at a median time of 29.9 months. Imaging correlation showed 100% specificity and 66.7% sensitivity for the depiction of residual or recurrent tumor. Conclusion: We conclude that TACE.combined with RFA could provide an effective treatment to decrease the drop-out rate from the OLT waiting list for HCC patients. Furthermore, this combination therapy results in high rates of complete tumor necrosis as evaluated in the histopathological analysis of the explanted livers.     Large spin systematics in CFT

    20 pages; v2: version published in JHEPUsing conformal field theory (CFT) arguments we derive an infinite number of constraints on the large spin expansion of the anomalous dimensions and structure constants of higher spin operators. These arguments rely only on analiticity, unitarity, crossing-symmetry and the structure of the conformal partial wave expansion. We obtain results for both, perturbative CFT to all order in the perturbation parameter, as well as non-perturbatively. For the case of conformal gauge theories this provides a proof of the reciprocity principle to all orders in perturbation theory and provides a new "reciprocity" principle for structure constants. We argue that these results extend also to non-conformal theories.Peer reviewe

    Group-Based Parent Training Interventions for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: a Literature Review

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders should have access to interventions to help them understand and support their child. This literature review examines the existing evidence for group-based parent training interventions that support parents of children with autism. From the literature, core intervention processes and outcomes are identified and include parenting and parent behaviour, parent health, child behaviour and peer and social support. Results show a positive trend for intervention effectiveness, but findings are limited by low-quality studies and heterogeneity of intervention content, outcomes and outcome measurement. Future research should focus on specifying effective intervention ingredients and modes of delivery, consistent and reliable outcome measurement, and improving methodological rigour to build a more robust evidence base

    Monopolin subunit Csm1 associates with MIND complex to establish monopolar attachment of sister kinetochores at meiosis I

    Sexually reproducing organisms halve their cellular ploidy during gametogenesis by undergoing a specialized form of cell division known as meiosis. During meiosis, a single round of DNA replication is followed by two rounds of nuclear divisions (referred to as meiosis I and II). While sister kinetochores bind to microtubules emanating from opposite spindle poles during mitosis, they bind to microtubules originating from the same spindle pole during meiosis I. This phenomenon is referred to as mono-orientation and is essential for setting up the reductional mode of chromosome segregation during meiosis I. In budding yeast, mono-orientation depends on a four component protein complex referred to as monopolin which consists of two nucleolar proteins Csm1 and Lrs4, meiosis-specific protein Mam1 of unknown function and casein kinase Hrr25. Monopolin complex binds to kinetochores during meiosis I and prevents bipolar attachments. Although monopolin associates with kinetochores during meiosis I, its binding site(s) on the kinetochore is not known and its mechanism of action has not been established. By carrying out an imaging-based screen we have found that the MIND complex, a component of the central kinetochore, is required for monopolin association with kinetochores during meiosis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that interaction of monopolin subunit Csm1 with the N-terminal domain of MIND complex subunit Dsn1, is essential for both the association of monopolin with kinetochores and for monopolar attachment of sister kinetochores during meiosis I. As such this provides the first functional evidence for a monopolin-binding site at the kinetochore

    Can Doubly Strange Dibaryon Resonances be Discovered at RHIC?

    The baryon-baryon continuum invariant mass spectrum generated from relativistic nucleus + nucleus collision data may reveal the existence of doubly-strange dibaryons not stable against strong decay if they lie within a few MeV of threshold. Furthermore, since the dominant component of these states is a superposition of two color-octet clusters which can be produced intermediately in a color-deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP), an enhanced production of dibaryon resonances could be a signal of QGP formation. A total of eight, doubly-strange dibaryon states are considered for experimental search using the STAR detector (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) at the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These states may decay to Lambda-Lambda and/or proton-Cascade-minus, depending on the resonance energy. STAR's large acceptance, precision tracking and vertex reconstruction capabilities, and large data volume capacity, make it an ideal instrument to use for such a search. Detector performance and analysis sensitivity are studied as a function of resonance production rate and width for one particular dibaryon which can directly strong decay to proton-Cascade-minus but not Lambda-Lambda. Results indicate that such resonances may be discovered using STAR if the resonance production rates are comparable to coalescence model predictions for dibaryon bound states.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, revised versio

    The Suppressor of AAC2 Lethality SAL1 Modulates Sensitivity of Heterologously Expressed Artemia ADP/ATP Carrier to Bongkrekate in Yeast

    The ADP/ATP carrier protein (AAC) expressed in Artemia franciscana is refractory to bongkrekate. We generated two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae where AAC1 and AAC3 were inactivated and the AAC2 isoform was replaced with Artemia AAC containing a hemagglutinin tag (ArAAC-HA). In one of the strains the suppressor of ΔAAC2 lethality, SAL1, was also inactivated but a plasmid coding for yeast AAC2 was included, because the ArAACΔsal1Δ strain was lethal. In both strains ArAAC-HA was expressed and correctly localized to the mitochondria. Peptide sequencing of ArAAC expressed in Artemia and that expressed in the modified yeasts revealed identical amino acid sequences. The isolated mitochondria from both modified strains developed 85% of the membrane potential attained by mitochondria of control strains, and addition of ADP yielded bongkrekate-sensitive depolarizations implying acquired sensitivity of ArAAC-mediated adenine nucleotide exchange to this poison, independent from SAL1. However, growth of ArAAC-expressing yeasts in glycerol-containing media was arrested by bongkrekate only in the presence of SAL1. We conclude that the mitochondrial environment of yeasts relying on respiratory growth conferred sensitivity of ArAAC to bongkrekate in a SAL1-dependent manner. © 2013 Wysocka-Kapcinska et al

    Heterogeneous clinical spectrum of DNAJC12-deficient hyperphenylalaninemia:From attention deficit to severe dystonia and intellectual disability

    BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive mutations in DNAJC12, encoding a cochaperone of HSP70 with hitherto unknown function, were recently described to lead to hyperphenylalaninemia, central monoamine neurotransmitter (dopamine and serotonin) deficiency, dystonia and intellectual disability in six subjects affected by homozygous variants. OBJECTIVE: Patients exhibiting hyperphenylalaninemia in whom deficiencies in hepatic phenylalanine hydroxylase and tetrahydrobiopterin cofactor metabolism had been excluded were subsequently analysed for DNAJC12 variants. METHODS: To analyse DNAJC12, genomic DNA from peripheral blood (Sanger sequencing), as well as quantitative messenger RNA (Real Time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR)) and protein expression (Western blot) from primary skin fibroblasts were performed. RESULTS: We describe five additional patients from three unrelated families with homozygosity/compound heterozygosity in DNAJC12 with three novel variants: c.85delC/p.Gln29Lysfs*38, c.596G>T/p.*199Leuext*42 and c.214C>T/p.(Arg72*). In contrast to previously reported DNAJC12-deficient patients, all five cases showed a very mild neurological phenotype. In two subjects, cerebrospinal fluid and primary skin fibroblasts were analysed showing similarly low 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid and homovanillic acid concentrations but more reduced expressions of mRNA and DNAJC12 compared with previously described patients. All patients responded to tetrahydrobiopterin challenge by lowering blood phenylalanine levels. CONCLUSIONS: DNAJC12 deficiency appears to result in a more heterogeneous neurological phenotype than originally described. While early identification and institution of treatment with tetrahydrobiopterin and neurotransmitter precursors is crucial to ensure optimal neurological outcome in DNAJC12-deficient patients with a severe phenotype, optimal treatment for patients with a milder phenotype remains to be defined
