Dewey Hodges’s Research in Structural Dynamics, Aeroelasticity, and Composites: A Personal Perspective
The contributions of Dewey Hodges within the specialized areas of structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, and composites are highlighted in this paper. Dewey Hodges has published 215 journal papers and 170 conference papers covering a wide range of topics in aerospace structures. His research and academic career span nearly five decades and it is difficult, if not impossible, to give a detailed commentary on his colossal achievement in the confines of a single paper. It is widely acknowledged that Dewey Hodges’s research record is no less than incredible. He has not only given an exceptional account of himself but has also demonstrated his extraordinary versatility in research. The author of this paper has known him both personally and professionally for nearly three decades and, with great humility, he acknowledges the enormous benefit he has received from his association with him. Given the huge volume of work Dewey Hodges has produced and the enormity of the task of commenting on it, the author has understandably been highly selective in choosing which contributions to discuss

Easterly wave disturbances over Northeast Brazil: an observational analysis
This paper aims to identify the circulation associated with Easterly Wave Disturbances (EWDs) that propagate toward the Eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB) and their impact on the rainfall over ENEB during 2006 and 2007 rainy seasons (April–July). The EWDs identification and trajectory are analyzed using an automatic tracking technique (TracKH). The EWDs circulation patterns and their main features were obtained using the composite technique. To evaluate the TracKH efficiency, a validation was done by comparing the EWDs number tracked against observed cases obtained from an observational analysis. The mean characteristics of EWDs are 5.5-day period, propagation speed of ~9.5 m·s−1, and a 4500 km wavelength. A synoptic analysis shows that between days −2 d and 0 d, the low level winds presented cyclonic relative vorticity and convergence anomalies both in 2006 and 2007. The EWDs signals are strongest at low levels. The EWDs propagation is associated with relative humidity and precipitation positive anomalies and OLR and omega negative anomalies. The EWDs tracks are seen over all ENEB and their lysis occurs between the ENEB and marginally inside the continent. The tracking captured 71% of EWDs in all periods, indicating that an objective analysis is a promising method for EWDs detection
Legal and political barriers and enablers to the deployment of marine renewable energy
Ocean energy is a promising source of clean renewable energy, with clear development targets set by the European Commission. However, the ocean energy sector faces non-technological challenges and opportunities that are frequently overlooked in deployment plans. The present study aimed to provide a critical evaluation of the ocean energy sector’s legal, institutional, and political frameworks with an identification and analysis of both barriers and enabling features for the deployment of ocean energy. In the first stage, a literature review on the current political and regulatory frameworks of a set of European countries was carried out, setting the basis for the main challenges and enabling factors faced by the sector. Secondly, a critical analysis of the main non-technological barriers and enablers was performed, which was supported by questionnaires sent to regulators, technology developers, and test-site managers. This questionnaire allowed us to collect and integrate the views, perceptions, and personal experiences of the main stakeholders of the ocean energy sector in the analysis. The most relevant insights were collected to guide future policy instruments, supports, and consenting measures in a more informed and effective manner and to help accelerate the development of the sector
Alternatives to mental health admissions for children and adolescents experiencing mental health crises: A systematic review of the literature
Background: Many children and young people (CYP) presenting with mental health crises are admitted to hospital due to concerns around illness severity and risk. Whilst inpatient admissions have an important role for such children, there are a number of burdens associated with them, and safe avoidance of admissions is favourable. We systematically reviewed the literature for studies of interventions reported as alternatives to a hospital admission in CYP presenting with mental health crises, in any inpatient setting. Methods: Three databases (PsychInfo, PubMed and Web of Science) were searched for peer-reviewed papers in October 2020, with an updated search in May 2021. Results: We identified 19 papers of interventions delivered in the emergency department, the home, outside of home but outside of clinics and in hospital clinics. The quality of most included studies was low, with less than half being randomised controlled trials and only half of these at low risk of bias. The best quality studies and greatest evidence for efficacy came from in-home interventions, in particular multisystemic therapy, which improved psychological outcomes, and though a large number of CYP still ended up being admitted, there appeared to be decreased length of stay. Conclusions: Overall, we could not recommend a particular intervention as an alternative to inpatient admission; however, our review describes benefits across a range of types of interventions that might be considered in multi-modal treatments. We also provide recommendations for future research, in particular the evaluation of new interventions as they emerge
Physical limits of inference
I show that physical devices that perform observation, prediction, or
recollection share an underlying mathematical structure. I call devices with
that structure "inference devices". I present a set of existence and
impossibility results concerning inference devices. These results hold
independent of the precise physical laws governing our universe. In a limited
sense, the impossibility results establish that Laplace was wrong to claim that
even in a classical, non-chaotic universe the future can be unerringly
predicted, given sufficient knowledge of the present. Alternatively, these
impossibility results can be viewed as a non-quantum mechanical "uncertainty
principle". Next I explore the close connections between the mathematics of
inference devices and of Turing Machines. In particular, the impossibility
results for inference devices are similar to the Halting theorem for TM's.
Furthermore, one can define an analog of Universal TM's (UTM's) for inference
devices. I call those analogs "strong inference devices". I use strong
inference devices to define the "inference complexity" of an inference task,
which is the analog of the Kolmogorov complexity of computing a string. However
no universe can contain more than one strong inference device. So whereas the
Kolmogorov complexity of a string is arbitrary up to specification of the UTM,
there is no such arbitrariness in the inference complexity of an inference
task. I end by discussing the philosophical implications of these results,

Presumptive self-diagnosis of malaria and other febrile illnesses in Sierra Leone
Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of self-diagnosis of malaria and other febrile illnesses in Bo, Sierra Leone. Methods: All households in two neighboring sections of Bo were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey. Results: A total of 882 households (an 85% participation rate) that were home to 5410 individuals participated in the study. Of the 910 individuals reported to have had what the household considered to be malaria in the past month, only 41% were diagnosed by a healthcare professional or a laboratory test. Of the 1402 individuals reported to have had any type of febrile illness within the past six months, only 34% had sought a clinical or laboratory diagnosis. Self-diagnosis of influenza, yellow fever, typhoid, and pneumonia was also common. Conclusion: Self-diagnosis and presumptive treatment with antimalarial drugs and other antibiotic medications that are readily available without a prescription may compromise health outcomes for febrile adults and children.Key words: Malaria, fevers, self-care, health services accessibility, community pharmacy services, West Afric

How well does the HadGEM2-ES coupled model represent the Southern Hemisphere storm tracks?
This study presents an assessment of the ability of the Hadley Centre Global Environment Model version 2—Earth system configuration (HadGEM2-ES)—in simulating the mid-latitude storm tracks over the Southern Hemisphere (SH). The storm tracks are primarily assessed using cyclone tracking using data from a 4 member ensemble of 27-year simulations of HadGEM2-ES over the historical period, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis. Both winter and summer periods are considered and contrasted. Results show that the storm track (ST) climatology of HadGEM2-ES presents similar patterns to those of the reanalysis. However, the model tends to represent the austral winter ST position with an equatorward bias and a zonal bias in the spiral towards the pole. The main differences were found during the austral winter, with large track density biases over the Indian Ocean indicating a poor representation of the ST in this specific region. This was found to be related to two factors. First, the large negative genesis biases over South America, Antarctic Peninsula and the Antarctic coast. Second, the model resolution and the representation of the Andes Mountains in South America. The link between STs and the large-scale circulation is examined and shows at upper levels an equatorward jet position bias of the subtropical jet and a negative bias in the eddy-driven, associated with a large cold bias over the extratropical and polar regions. The analysis of the large-scale circulation shows that the split jet during winter has problems in the model linked to these biases, including geopotential anomaly and sea surface temperature biases. Consequently, in general the track densities over the Southern oceans are underestimated in the austral winter. During summer, the results show the STs move poleward and there is a single eddy-driven jet, which is represented relatively well compared with the winter situation. These factors tend to reduce the differences seen in the cyclone track distribution biases. Although the model has biases in the ST behaviour in the SH it is still considered that these do not preclude this model being used for perturbation and future projection studies

Climatology of easterly wave disturbances over the tropical South Atlantic
A 21-yr climatology of Easterly Waves Disturbances (EWDs) over the Tropical South Atlantic (TSA) has been examined using data from the European Centers for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) interim reanalysis (ERAI) and satellite data. This includes the frequency distribution of EWDs and their interannual variability. The large-scale environment associated with EWDs has been investigated for the coastal region of Northeast Brazil (NEB) for the rainy (April-August) season using a composite analysis. To better understand the life cycle of EWDs, an automated tracking scheme has been used to track vorticity centers associated with the EWDs in the ERAI data. EWDs were first identified in ERAI, resulting in 518 observed cases. These were found to show notable interannual variability with around 16-40 episodes by year and with average lifetime of 4-6 days. Of the identified EWDs, 97% reached the coast of NEB, of which 64% were convective in nature and 14% moved across the NEB region and reached the Amazon. The annual occurrence of EWDs seems to be lower (higher) during El Niño (La Niña). The monthly occurrence of EWDs shows higher activity in the rainy season. EWDs originate in association with five types of system: cold fronts, convective clusters from the west coast of Africa, Intertropical Convergence Zone and Tropical Upper Tropospheric Cyclonic Vortices. The composite analysis presents strong relative vorticity (RV) and divergence anomalies at low levels, as well as in the vertical profiles of relative humidity and vertical velocity (omega). The precipitation composites show that the EWDs propagate between the TSA and NEB and contribute at least 60% of the total rainfall over the east coast of NEB throughout the rainy season
Deep Sequencing of Target Linkage Assay-Identified Regions in Familial Breast Cancer: Methods, Analysis Pipeline and Troubleshooting
Background: The classical candidate-gene approach has failed to identify novel breast cancer susceptibility genes. Nowadays, massive parallel sequencing technology allows the development of studies unaffordable a few years ago. However, analysis protocols are not yet sufficiently developed to extract all information from the huge amount of data obtained. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study, we performed high throughput sequencing in two regions located on chromosomes 3 and 6, recently identified by linkage studies by our group as candidate regions for harbouring breast cancer susceptibility genes. In order to enrich for the coding regions of all described genes located in both candidate regions, a hybrid-selection method on tiling microarrays was performed. Does a SLAP lesion affect shoulder muscle recruitment as measured by EMG activity during a rugby tackle?
Background: The study objective was to assess the influence of a SLAP lesion on onset of EMG activity in shoulder muscles during a front on rugby football tackle within professional rugby players.
Methods: Mixed cross-sectional study evaluating between and within group differences in EMG onset times. Testing was carried out within the physiotherapy department of a university sports medicine clinic. The test group consisted of 7 players with clinically diagnosed SLAP lesions, later verified on arthroscopy. The reference group consisted of 15 uninjured and full time professional rugby players from within the same playing squad. Controlled tackles were performed against a tackle dummy. Onset of EMG activity was assessed from surface EMG of Pectorialis Major, Biceps Brachii, Latissimus Dorsi, Serratus Anterior and Infraspinatus muscles relative to time of impact. Analysis of differences in activation timing between muscles and limbs (injured versus non-injured side and non injured side versus matched reference group).
Results: Serratus Anterior was activated prior to all other muscles in all (P = 0.001-0.03) subjects. In the SLAP
injured shoulder Biceps was activated later than in the non-injured side. Onset times of all muscles of the noninjured shoulder in the injured player were consistently earlier compared with the reference group. Whereas, within
the injured shoulder, all muscle activation timings were later than in the reference group.
Conclusions: This study shows that in shoulders with a SLAP lesion there is a trend towards delay in activation time of Biceps and other muscles with the exception of an associated earlier onset of activation of Serratus anterior, possibly due to a coping strategy to protect glenohumeral stability and thoraco-scapular stability.
