Hunting Nature
In Hunting Nature, Thomas P. Hodge explores Ivan Turgenev's relationship to nature through his conception, description, and practice of huntingâthe most unquenchable passion of his life. Informed by an ecocritical perspective, Hodge takes an approach that is equal parts interpretive and documentarian, grounding his observations thoroughly in Russian cultural and linguistic context and a wide range of Turgenev's fiction, poetry, correspondence, and other writings. Included within the book are some of Turgenev's important writings on natureânever previously translated into English. Turgenev, who is traditionally identified as a chronicler of Russia's ideological struggles, is presented in Hunting Nature as an expert naturalist whose intimate knowledge of flora and fauna deeply informed his view of philosophy, politics, and the role of literature in society. Ultimately, Hodge argues that we stand to learn a great deal about Turgenev's thought and complex literary technique when we read him in both cultural and environmental contexts. Hodge details how Turgenev remains mindful of the way textual detail is wedded to the organic worldâthe priroda that he observed, and ached for, more keenly than perhaps any other Russian writer

Evaluating Lifeworld as an emancipatory methodology
Disability research is conducted within a highly politicised âhotbedâ of competing paradigms and principles. New researchers, who want to work within the social model, are soon faced with complex and challenging methodological and philosophical dilemmas. The social model advocates research agendas that are focused on the emancipation and empowerment of disabled people but, in reality, these are rarely achieved. To be successful researchers need to engage with innovative and creative methodologies and to share their experiences of these within environments that welcome challenge and debate. This paper focuses on Lifeworld and assesses its value as a tool for emancipatory research. Using examples from a study with parents, whose children were in the process of being labelled as having autism, the paper illustrates how the principles that âunderpinâ the methodology offered a supportive framework for a novice researcher

Family Diabetes Matters: A View from the Other Side
BACKGROUND: Typically, chronic disease self-management happens in a family context, and for African American adults living with diabetes, family seems to matter in self-management processes. Many qualitative studies describe family diabetes interactions from the perspective of adults living with diabetes, but we have not heard from family members.
OBJECTIVE: To explore patient and family perspectives on family interactions around diabetes.
DESIGN: Qualitative study using focus group methodology. PARTICIPANTS & APPROACH: We conducted eight audiotaped focus groups among African Americans (four with patients with diabetes and four with family members not diagnosed with diabetes), with a focus on topics of family communication, conflict, and support. The digital files were transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using qualitative data analysis software. Directed content analysis and grounded theory approaches guided the interpretation of code summaries.
RESULTS: Focus groups included 67 participants (81Â % female, mean age 64Â years). Family members primarily included spouses, siblings, and adult children/grandchildren. For patients with diabetes, central issues included shifting family roles to accommodate diabetes and conflicts stemming from family advice-giving. Family members described discomfort with the perceived need to police or "stand over" the diabetic family member, not wanting to "throw diabetes in their [relative's] face," perceiving their communications as unhelpful, and confusion about their role in diabetes care. These concepts generated an emergent theme of "family diabetes silence."
CONCLUSION: Diabetes silence, role adjustments, and conflict appear to be important aspects to address in family-centered diabetes self-management interventions. Contextual data gathered through formative research can inform such family-centered intervention development
Hodge Theory on Metric Spaces
Hodge theory is a beautiful synthesis of geometry, topology, and analysis,
which has been developed in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. On the other
hand, spaces of images, which are important in the mathematical foundations of
vision and pattern recognition, do not fit this framework. This motivates us to
develop a version of Hodge theory on metric spaces with a probability measure.
We believe that this constitutes a step towards understanding the geometry of
vision.

Strongly correlating liquids and their isomorphs
This paper summarizes the properties of strongly correlating liquids, i.e.,
liquids with strong correlations between virial and potential energy
equilibrium fluctuations at constant volume. We proceed to focus on the
experimental predictions for strongly correlating glass-forming liquids. These
predictions include i) density scaling, ii) isochronal superposition, iii) that
there is a single function from which all frequency-dependent viscoelastic
response functions may be calculated, iv) that strongly correlating liquids are
approximately single-parameter liquids with close to unity Prigogine-Defay
ratio, and v) that the fictive temperature initially decreases for an isobaric
temperature up jump. The "isomorph filter", which allows one to test for
universality of theories for the non-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the
relaxation time, is also briefly discussed

which admit weak local rules. As a corollary, we show that they are all based

Desmopressin for prevention of bleeding for thrombocytopenic, critically ill patients undergoing invasive procedures: A randomised, doubleâblind, placeboâcontrolled feasibility trial
Thrombocytopenic patients have an increased risk of bleeding when undergoing invasive procedures. In a multicentre, phase II, blinded, randomised, controlled feasibility trial, critically ill patients with platelet count 100 Ă 109/L or less were randomised 1:1 to intravenous desmopressin (0.3 ”g/kg) or placebo before an invasive procedure. Fortyâthree participants (18.8% of those eligible) were recruited, with 41 eligible for analysis. Postâprocedure bleeding occurred in one of 22 (4.5%) in the placebo arm and zero of 19 in the desmopressin arm. Despite liberal inclusion criteria, there were significant feasibility challenges recruiting patients in the critical care setting prior to invasive procedures
