Characteristics of electron injection at the oxide electrode/polyethylenimine ethoxylated/Alq₃ interface
Inverted organic light-emitting diodes (inverted OLEDs) require electron injection to an organic semiconductor from a transparent oxide electrode. Polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) has attracted considerable attention as an electron injection material. An injection mechanism has been suggested; however, the barrier height of electron injection has not been determined. In this paper, we present the experimental values for the electron injection barrier height at the transparent oxide electrode/PEIE/organic semiconductor interface. Electron-only devices, consisting of indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/PEIE/tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Alq₃)/Al, are fabricated. The temperature dependence of the current–voltage curves is measured corresponding to the electron injection of the ITO/PEIE/Alq3 interface. The current–voltage curves are found to be independent of the measurement temperature, which is explained by the tunneling model. The tunneling injection barriers height are calculated, and the experimental injection barrier height will be important for the development of inverted OLED devices.This is the Accepted Manuscript version of an article accepted for publication in Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. Validation of radiographic response evaluation criteria of preoperative chemotherapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas: Japanese Orthopaedic Association Committee on Musculoskeletal Tumors Cooperative Study
AbstractBackgroundThe radiographic evaluation of the response to preoperative chemotherapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas is based mostly on the change in primary tumor size before and after chemotherapy, as is done for many solid cancers. Its prognostic correlation, however, has hardly been validated.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective validation study of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) radiographic response evaluation criteria of preoperative chemotherapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas as a JOA Committee on Musculoskeletal Tumors cooperative study. A total of 125 consecutive patients with high-grade bone (n = 77) and soft tissue (n = 48) sarcomas treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and definitive surgery in 25 tertiary referral hospitals were selected for the study. We investigated the correlation between the tumor size-based radiographic response evaluation criteria of preoperative chemotherapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas provided by the JOA Committee on Musculoskeletal Tumors (hereafter called the JOA criteria) and the patients’ overall survival using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test.ResultsThe JOA criteria correlated relatively well with survival for malignant bone tumors (mostly comprising osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma) but not for soft tissue sarcomas, suggesting that the tumor size-based radiographic evaluation criteria for the response to preoperative chemotherapy in patients with soft tissue sarcomas is invalid.ConclusionsThe JOA criteria, based on the change in primary tumor size, is valid for malignant bone tumors but invalid for soft tissue sarcomas. Other new evaluation modalities of the response to preoperative chemotherapy using innovative functional imaging techniques are needed for soft tissue sarcomas
Cationized liposomal keto-mycolic acids isolated from Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin induce antitumor immunity in a syngeneic murine bladder cancer model
Intravesical therapy using Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the most established cancer immunotherapy for bladder cancer. However, its underlying mechanisms are unknown. Mycolic acid (MA), the most abundant lipid of the BCG cell wall, is suspected to be one of the essential active components of this immunogenicity. Here, we developed cationic liposomes incorporating three subclasses (α, keto, and methoxy) of MA purified separately from BCG, using the dendron-bearing lipid D22. The cationic liposomes using D22 were efficiently taken up by the murine bladder cancer cell line MB49 in vitro, but the non-cationic liposomes were not. Lip-kMA, a cationic liposome containing keto-MA, presented strong antitumor activity in two murine syngeneic graft models using the murine bladder cancer cell lines MB49 and MBT-2 in comparison to both Lip-aMA and Lip-mMA, which contained α-MA and methoxy-MA, respectively. Interestingly, Lip-kMA(D12), which was made of D12 instead of D22, did not exhibit antitumor activity in the murine syngeneic graft model using MB49 cells, although it was successfully taken up by MB49 cells in vitro. Histologically, compared to the number of infiltrating CD4 lymphocytes, the number of CD8 lymphocytes was higher in the tumors treated with Lip-kMA. Antitumor effects of Lip-kMA were not observed in nude mice, whereas weak but significant effects were observed in beige mice with natural killer activity deficiency. Thus, a cationized liposome containing keto-MA derived from BCG induced in vivo antitumor immunity. These findings will provide new insights into lipid immunogenicity and the underlying mechanisms of BCG immunotherapy
First underground results with NEWAGE-0.3a direction-sensitive dark matter detector
A direction-sensitive dark matter search experiment at Kamioka underground
laboratory with the NEWAGE-0.3a detector was performed. The NEWAGE- 0.3a
detector is a gaseous micro-time-projection chamber filled with CF4 gas at 152
Torr. The fiducial volume and target mass are 20*25*31 cm3 and 0.0115 kg,
respectively. With an exposure of 0.524 kgdays, improved spin-dependent weakly
interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton cross section limits by a
direction-sensitive method were achieved including a new record of 5400 pb for
150 GeV/c2 WIMPs. We studied the remaining background and found that ambient
gamma-rays contributed about one-fifth of the remaining background and
radioactive contaminants inside the gas chamber contributed the rest.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Physics Letters
Atrasentan and renal events in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (SONAR): a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial
Background: Short-term treatment for people with type 2 diabetes using a low dose of the selective endothelin A receptor antagonist atrasentan reduces albuminuria without causing significant sodium retention. We report the long-term effects of treatment with atrasentan on major renal outcomes. Methods: We did this double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial at 689 sites in 41 countries. We enrolled adults aged 18–85 years with type 2 diabetes, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)25–75 mL/min per 1·73 m 2 of body surface area, and a urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR)of 300–5000 mg/g who had received maximum labelled or tolerated renin–angiotensin system inhibition for at least 4 weeks. Participants were given atrasentan 0·75 mg orally daily during an enrichment period before random group assignment. Those with a UACR decrease of at least 30% with no substantial fluid retention during the enrichment period (responders)were included in the double-blind treatment period. Responders were randomly assigned to receive either atrasentan 0·75 mg orally daily or placebo. All patients and investigators were masked to treatment assignment. The primary endpoint was a composite of doubling of serum creatinine (sustained for ≥30 days)or end-stage kidney disease (eGFR <15 mL/min per 1·73 m 2 sustained for ≥90 days, chronic dialysis for ≥90 days, kidney transplantation, or death from kidney failure)in the intention-to-treat population of all responders. Safety was assessed in all patients who received at least one dose of their assigned study treatment. The study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01858532. Findings: Between May 17, 2013, and July 13, 2017, 11 087 patients were screened; 5117 entered the enrichment period, and 4711 completed the enrichment period. Of these, 2648 patients were responders and were randomly assigned to the atrasentan group (n=1325)or placebo group (n=1323). Median follow-up was 2·2 years (IQR 1·4–2·9). 79 (6·0%)of 1325 patients in the atrasentan group and 105 (7·9%)of 1323 in the placebo group had a primary composite renal endpoint event (hazard ratio [HR]0·65 [95% CI 0·49–0·88]; p=0·0047). Fluid retention and anaemia adverse events, which have been previously attributed to endothelin receptor antagonists, were more frequent in the atrasentan group than in the placebo group. Hospital admission for heart failure occurred in 47 (3·5%)of 1325 patients in the atrasentan group and 34 (2·6%)of 1323 patients in the placebo group (HR 1·33 [95% CI 0·85–2·07]; p=0·208). 58 (4·4%)patients in the atrasentan group and 52 (3·9%)in the placebo group died (HR 1·09 [95% CI 0·75–1·59]; p=0·65). Interpretation: Atrasentan reduced the risk of renal events in patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease who were selected to optimise efficacy and safety. These data support a potential role for selective endothelin receptor antagonists in protecting renal function in patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk of developing end-stage kidney disease.
