Measurement of impact pressure and bruising of apple fruit using pressure-sensitive film technique

    Get PDF
Impact pressure and bruising of apple fruit were measured by means of a pressure-sensitive film technique, in order to develop methods for assessing and predicting bruising of apples resulting from impact loads during the course of transport and handling. Results of impact tests with apples indicate that when the fruits are dropped from different heights onto different impacting surfaces, the bruise area and volume could be assessed and predicted by regression models based on the impact force obtained from the pressure-sensitive film (FPSF). The coefficients of determination (R2) for bruise area and bruise volume were found to be 0.91 and 0.95, respectively

Background This report describes the first miniport method using  subcutaneous endoscopically assisted ligation (SEAL) for the treatment of girls with inguinal hernia. To validate its safety and efficacy, the  authors evaluated their early experiences. Methods Between April 2014 and December 2014, 19 SEALs using miniport were performed on 14 patients at the Fukaya Red-Cross Hospital, Saitama, Japan. Their mean age was 6 years (range, 11–128 months). This technique was performed using two ports (a 5mm port placed using the open technique and an additional 2mm miniport). A 5mm laparoscope was inserted via the umbilicus. The miniport was introduced percutaneously in the inguinal region under laparoscopic guidance and manipulated around the medial or lateral   hemicircumference of the internal ring extraperitoneally to place a purse-string around the internal ring. The hernia sac and patent processus vaginalis were closed at the level of the internal inguinal ring   extraperitoneally with circuit suturing using the 2mm miniport. Only the umbilical fascia was closed with an absorbable suture. No skin sutures were applied. We collected data regarding operative time, complications, and recurrence. Results The mean operative time was 20 ±6 min (unilateral, n =9) or 42± 8 min (bilateral, n= 5). The mean follow-up period was 12.8 ± 2.5 (range, 9–19) months. No intraoperative complications associated with theprocedure occurred and no hernial recurrences have been identified so far. Conclusion SEAL using miniport proved to be a successful operative procedure compared with other  laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure procedures and produced excellent cosmetic results. SEAL using miniport for the treatment of girls with inguinal hernias appears to be safe, effective, and reliable. Keywords: inguinal hernia, miniport, SEA

Effect of a Large Dose of Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on Hepatic Peroxisome in Cynomolgus Monkeys (Macaca Fascicularis)

To elucidate the effect of a large dose of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) agonist, on hepatic peroxisomes, we orally administered 1,000 mg/kg/day, once daily, to 3 male and 4 female cynomolgus monkeys for 28 days consecutively. Light-microscopic and electron microscopic examinations of the liver were carried out in conjunction with measurement of the hepatic fatty acid β-oxidation system (FAOS), carnitine acetyltransferase (CAT) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) activities, which are peroxisomal and/or mitochondrial enzyme activities. Electron microscopically, enlargement of the mitochondria was observed with lamellar orientation of the cristae along the major axis. Although the number of peroxisomes showed a tendency to increase when compared with those in a biopsied specimen before treatment, no abnormality in morphology was observed. A slight increase in CPT activity was noted at termination. No changes were noted in hepatic FAOS or CAT activity. In conclusion, although repeated oral treatment of cynomolgus monkeys with a large dose of DEHP induced a subtle increase in the numbers of peroxisomes with slight enlargements of the mitochondria, this low-sensitivity response to peroxisome proliferators in cynomolgus monkeys was considered to be closer to the response in humans than that in rodents

Prognostic Significance of Vitamin D Receptor Polymorphisms in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

BACKGROUND:In patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms and haplotypes are reported to be associated with survival. We hypothesized that a similar association would be observed in patients with head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC). METHODS:In a post-hoc analysis of our previous prospective cohort study, VDR polymorphisms including Cdx2 G/A (rs11568820), FokI C/T (rs10735810), BsmI A/G (rs1544410), ApaI G/T (rs7976091), and TaqI T/C (rs731236) were genotyped by sequencing in 204 consecutive patients with HNSCC who underwent tumor resection. Progression-free survival was compared between VDR polymorphisms using Kaplan-Meier survival curves with log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models adjusting for age, gender, smoking status, primary tumor sites, postoperative stages, existence of residual tumor, and postoperative treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. RESULTS:During a median follow-up of 1,047 days, tumor progression and death occurred in 76 (37.3%) and 27 (13.2%) patients, respectively. The FokI T/T genotype was associated with poor progression-free survival: median survival for T/T was 265 days compared with 1,127 days for C/C or C/T (log-rank test: P = 0.0004; adjusted hazard ratio, 3.03; 95% confidence interval, 1.62 to 5.67; P = 0.001). In contrast, the other polymorphisms (Cdx2, BsmI, ApaI, TaqI) showed no significant association with progression-free survival. The A-T-G (Cdx2-FokI-ApaI) haplotype demonstrated a significant association with a higher progression rate (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION:These results suggest that VDR polymorphisms and haplotypes may be associated with prognosis in patients with HNSCC, although the sample size is not large enough to draw definitive conclusions
