Imaging anomalous nematic order and strain in optimally doped BaFe(As,P)
We present the strain and temperature dependence of an anomalous nematic
phase in optimally doped BaFe(As,P). Polarized ultrafast optical
measurements reveal broken 4-fold rotational symmetry in a temperature range
above in which bulk probes do not detect a phase transition. Using
ultrafast microscopy, we find that the magnitude and sign of this nematicity
vary on a m length scale, and the temperature at which it
onsets ranges from 40 K near a domain boundary to 60 K deep within a domain.
Scanning Laue microdiffraction maps of local strain at room temperature
indicate that the nematic order appears most strongly in regions of weak,
isotropic strain. These results indicate that nematic order arises in a genuine
phase transition rather than by enhancement of local anisotropy by a strong
nematic susceptibility. We interpret our results in the context of a proposed
surface nematic phase

Metamorphosis of plasma turbulence-shear flow dynamics through a transcritical bifurcation
The structural properties of an economical model for a confined plasma
turbulence governor are investigated through bifurcation and stability
analyses. A close relationship is demonstrated between the underlying
bifurcation framework of the model and typical behavior associated with low- to
high-confinement transitions such as shear flow stabilization of turbulence and
oscillatory collective action. In particular, the analysis evinces two types of
discontinuous transition that are qualitatively distinct. One involves
classical hysteresis, governed by viscous dissipation. The other is
intrinsically oscillatory and non-hysteretic, and thus provides a model for the
so-called dithering transitions that are frequently observed. This
metamorphosis, or transformation, of the system dynamics is an important late
side-effect of symmetry-breaking, which manifests as an unusual non-symmetric

Development and Validation of the RAFFLE: A Measure of Reasons and Facilitators for Loot Box Engagement
Qualitative studies have identified a diverse array of motivations for purchasing items within video games through chance-based mechanisms (i.e., âloot boxesâ). Given that some individualsâparticularly those at risk of disordered gaming and/or gamblingâare prone to over-involvement with loot box purchasing, it is important to have a reliable, valid means of measuring the role of different motivations in driving purchasing behaviour. Building on prior qualitative research, this paper reports the development and validation of the âRAFFLEâ scale, to measure the Reasons and Facilitators for Loot box Engagement. A 23-item, seven-factor scale was developed through cognitive interviews (n = 25) followed by two surveys of UK-based gamers who purchase loot boxes; analysed via exploratory (n = 503) and confirmatory (n = 1495) factor analysis, respectively. Subscales encompassed âenhancementâ; âprogressionâ; âsocial pressureâ; âdistraction/compulsionâ; âaltruismâ; âfear of missing outâ; and âresaleâ. The scale showed good criterion and construct validity (correlating well with measures of loot box engagement; the risky loot box index (r = 0.63) and monthly self-reported spend (r = 0.38)), and good internal validity (Cronbachâs alpha = 0.84). Parallels with, and divergence from, motivations for related activities of gaming and gambling, and alignment with broader theoretical models of motivation, are discussed

Integrin α6ÎČ4E variant is associated with actin and CD9 structures and modifies the biophysical properties of cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions
Integrin alpha 6 beta 4 is an essential, dynamic adhesion receptor for laminin 332 found on epithelial cells, required for formation of strong cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion and induced migration, and coordinated by regions of the beta 4C cytoplasmic domain. beta 4E, a unique splice variant of beta 4 expressed in normal tissue, contains a cytoplasmic domain of 231 amino acids with a unique sequence of 114 amino acids instead of beta 4C's canonical 1089 amino acids. We determined the distribution of alpha 6 beta 4E within normal human glandular epithelium and its regulation and effect on cellular biophysical properties. Canonical alpha 6 beta 4C expressed in all basal cells, as expected, while alpha 6 beta 4E expressed within a subset of luminal cells. alpha 6 beta 4E expression was induced by three-dimensional culture conditions, activated Src, was reversible, and was stabilized by bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor. alpha 6 beta 4C expressed in all cells during induced migration, whereas alpha 6 beta 4E was restricted to a subset of cells with increased kinetics of cell-cell and cell-ECM resistance properties. Interestingly, alpha 6 beta 4E presented in "ringlike" patterns measuring similar to 1.75 x 0.72 microns and containing actin and CD9 at cell-ECM locations. In contrast, alpha 6 beta 4C expressed only within hemidesmosome-like structures containing BP180. Sex-biased parental care and sexual size dimorphism in a provisioning arthropod
The diverse selection pressures driving the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have long been debated. While the balance between fecundity selection and sexual selection has received much attention, explanations based on sex-specific ecology have proven harder to test. In ectotherms, females are typically larger than males, and this is frequently thought to be because size constrains female fecundity more than it constrains male mating success. However, SSD could additionally reflect maternal care strategies. Under this hypothesis, females are relatively larger where reproduction requires greater maximum maternal effort â for example where mothers transport heavy provisions to nests.
To test this hypothesis we focussed on digger wasps (Hymenoptera: Ammophilini), a relatively homogeneous group in which only females provision offspring. In some species, a single large prey item, up to 10 times the motherâs weight, must be carried to each burrow on foot; other species provide many small prey, each flown individually to the nest.
We found more pronounced female-biased SSD in species where females carry single, heavy prey. More generally, SSD was negatively correlated with numbers of prey provided per offspring. Females provisioning multiple small items had longer wings and thoraxes, probably because smaller prey are carried in flight.
Despite much theorising, few empirical studies have tested how sex-biased parental care can affect SSD. Our study reveals that such costs can be associated with the evolution of dimorphism, and this should be investigated in other clades where parental care costs differ between sexes and species
Quasar accretion disk sizes from continuum reverberation mapping in the DES standard-star fields
Measurements of the physical properties of accretion disks in active galactic
nuclei are important for better understanding the growth and evolution of
supermassive black holes. We present the accretion disk sizes of 22 quasars
from continuum reverberation mapping with data from the Dark Energy Survey
(DES) standard star fields and the supernova C fields. We construct continuum
lightcurves with the \textit{griz} photometry that span five seasons of DES
observations. These data sample the time variability of the quasars with a
cadence as short as one day, which corresponds to a rest frame cadence that is
a factor of a few higher than most previous work. We derive time lags between
bands with both JAVELIN and the interpolated cross-correlation function method,
and fit for accretion disk sizes using the JAVELIN Thin Disk model. These new
measurements include disks around black holes with masses as small as
, which have equivalent sizes at 2500\AA \, as small as
light days in the rest frame. We find that most objects have
accretion disk sizes consistent with the prediction of the standard thin disk
model when we take disk variability into account. We have also simulated the
expected yield of accretion disk measurements under various observational
scenarios for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Deep Drilling Fields. We find
that the number of disk measurements would increase significantly if the
default cadence is changed from three days to two days or one day.Comment: 33 pages, 24 figure
