    Peristaltic transport of Johnson–Segalman fluid in a curved channel with compliant walls

    The present investigation deals with the peristaltic flow of an incompressible Johnson–Segalman fluid in a curved channel. Effects of the channel wall properties are taken into account. The associated equations for peristaltic flow in a curved channel are modeled. Mathematical analysis is simplified under long wavelength and low Reynolds number assumptions. The solution expressions are established for small Weissenberg number. Effects of several embedded parameters on the flow quantities are discussed

    Role of CXR and HRCT in diagnosing COVID-19, a descriptive cross-sectional study, at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan

    ABSTRACT Objectives: Objectives of this study are to do the analysis of chest X-ray and High-resolution CT scan findings in patients who are clinical suspects of COVID-19 infection. The other objective is to classify the radiological findings in mild, moderate or severe diseases according to BSTI criteria for chest X-ray and CTSS for high-resolution CT scan. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A group of 50 patients who were clinically suspected cases of COVID-19 infection, presented to Corona flu filter clinic of Holy Family Hospital (HFH) or admitted to corona isolation wards were included. The time duration of the study was from 15 May 2020 to 15 June 2020. Patients labelled as clinically suspected cases were having positive contact with confirmed positive (based upon positive PCR) patients. Recent travel history from the area having an outbreak. They were having clinical signs/symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath, lethargy and loss of sense of smell or taste. CXR and HRCT was the investigation of choice for all the 50 patients.  I also did PCR to make a correlation with the other two tests. All radiological findings were analyzed based upon Fleischner society glossary of terms for thoracic imaging. Two radiologists then assessed CXRs findings based upon BSTI criteria. They marked those CXR findings as low, moderate and high probability for COVID-19 infection. HRCT findings were analyzed using CT-SS, and researchers labelled outcomes as mild, moderate and severe disease.  Results: Out of 50 patients, 33(66%) were males, and 17(34%) were females. Mean age was 51 with ages ranging from 30-72 years. Presenting complaints were fever in 42(84%) patients, cough in 37(74%), lethargy in 33(66%), shortness of breath in 41(82%) and loss of sense of smell and taste in 21(42%) patients. Out of these 50, 32(72%) were having positive PCR for COVID-19 infection. On CXR 5(10%) patients showed classic findings which were highly probable for COVID-19. 19(38%) patients showed intermediate results for COVID-19, 7(14%) patients had a low probability of COVID-19 infection on CXRS. Out of 50, 19(38%), patients showed normal CXR with no evidence of COVID-19 infection. We did HRCT of the same patients on the same day; it showed 21(42%)patients with mild disease,23(46%)patients with moderate disease and 6(12%)patients with the severe disease according to CTSI.HRCT of 3(6%)patients was ok with no evidence of illness in bilateral lungs.    Conclusion: The role of radiology is crucial in the diagnosis of this viral illness. CXR, with its ability to detect changes of COVID-19 in lungs, should be used as a first-line imaging modality in clinically suspected patients. Moreover, it should also be used for follow up of patients with COVID-19. HRCT is very sensitive in the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection in its milder forms. Due to lack of its widespread availability in countries with inadequate medical facilities, it was not the primary imaging tool/screening tool. Due to risk of infection to radiological staff as well as non-covid-19 patients due to surface contact, due to reduced infection control issues, due to increased burden of ionizing radiations in patients.     Medical Students’ Perception and preferences on Methods of Anatomy Teaching- A survey between public and private institutes of Karachi, Pakistan

    Anatomy is an essential and basic subject in the field of human sciences. The reforms and new teaching methodologies has been revolutionizing the world and helping the student in better understanding the anatomical landmarks and specific details in an interactive way. The present study evaluated the mode of anatomy teaching in public and private medical institutes of Karachi along with the opinion of students on the best teaching tool of anatomy. A total of 347 participants from private and public medical colleges of Karachi participated in the study. The data was collected by rotating questionnaires in the classrooms. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The mean age ± SD of our sample was 19.10 ± 0.77 years. In this study, majority of students from private sector institute were satisfied (58%) with the teaching methodology implemented for teaching Anatomy whereas, about (74%) participants from public sector institutes were not satisfied with the teaching methodology of teaching Anatomy. Students recommended that the use of Anatomy models may help in their better understanding of Anatomy. The present study indicates that public and private medical institutes were still using old multimedia based teaching methods of anatomy and the students were not very satisfied with the mode of teaching in their institutes. Amendments and reforms shall be implemented and efficacious teaching techniques should be applied taking into consideration the opinion of the students to bring out the best understaning in the field of Anatomy

    Prevalence of clinical spectrum of cutaneous adverse drug reactions in patients presenting at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan

    Introduction: Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (CADRs) are the most common adverse drug reactions reported in the literature. CADRs have resulted in disabling infirmities during hospitalization and complications following outdoor drug therapy. The pattern of CADRs and the responsible drugs usually changes with the introduction of newer drugs and evolving clinical practices. Moreover, several international studies showed variable prevalence, emphasizing the need for local data in light of different socioeconomic and demographic practices. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of adverse cutaneous drug reactions and identify the clinical spectrum and any potential risk factors.Methodology: The current study is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Pakistan. One hundred ninety-three patients who met the study inclusion criteria were included. Data were collected from patients on a proforma after taking informed consent. Quantitative data were presented as simple descriptive statistics giving mean and standard deviation, while qualitative variables were presented as frequency and percentages. Effect modifiers were controlled through stratification to highlight the effect of these on the outcome variable. The post-stratification chi-square test was applied and the p-value of ≤0.05 was statistically significant.Results: A total of 193 patients who had cutaneous adverse drug reactions were included in the study. The mean age in this study was 47.78±8.33 years. One hundred eight (56%) were male and 85 (44%) were female. Out of 193 patients, 135 (69.9%), 50 (25.9%), 24 (12.4%), 12 (6.2%), 20 (10.4%), 11 (5.7%) and six (3.1%) had maculopapular rash, acneiform eruptions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiform, urticaria, fixed drug eruptions and toxic epidermal necrolysis, respectively.Conclusion: CADRs are a common clinical presentation and awareness and knowledge about their diagnosis and prevention is important. It can be assumed that in our local setup, the clinical trends and medications causing ADRs are strikingly similar to those found in other countries. Physicians commonly come across these cases and they should be well aware of the clinical spectrum of skin reactions to enable early diagnosis and management

    The Problem-Based Learning Approach towards Developing Soft Skills: A Systematic Review

    In this paper, we review systematically the role of problem-based learning (PBL) in developing soft skills in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and other fields of studies. The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) includes the most recent empirical, review, and conceptual studies from TVET and other multiple fields of studies including medicine, humanities, and engineering between the years of 2001 and 2016 collected from four databases. A qualitative method was used to accomplish the systematic review. After the collection of articles, the selected studies were analyzed through thematic analysis. From this review, we concluded that PBL as an instructional approach has a significant role in the development of soft skills among students of various disciplines including TVET; empirical evidence is predominantly conclusive in identifying the acquisitions of various soft skills including communication skills, conflict resolution skills, leadership skills, and interpersonal skills, and finally, several factors might influence the relationship of PBL and soft skills such as duration and process of PBL instruction, role of facilitator, and awareness and training of learners. Moreover, there are fewer number of empirical studies on the role and effects of PBL approach to developing soft skills in TVET

    The Perceptions of Medical Students Regarding Professionalism, a qualitative study

    Introduction: The elements of humanity and understanding the social values is significantly important for the health care workers to ensure positive health outcomes and patient’s safety, as care and empathy during the treatments are provided innately according to the standards, preferences and values of the individual.  Aim: Our goal is to prepare finest quality physicians who will serve as role models for future medical practitioners. The aim of this study is to find out student’s perception regarding professionalism in order to design curricular contents and matching instructional strategies aiming at enhancement of professionalism, understanding, practice and behavioral change.  Method: The study has been conducted at a private medical college in Islamabad after taking ethical approval. In order to collect data, a qualitative cross-sectional study design had been used. Focus group interview was conducted on semi structured questions. Data was recorded, transcribed, themes were extracted and analyzed by manual thematic analysis.  Results: the study identified fundamental themes regarding professionalism. Students had fair knowledge regarding professionalism but lack deep understanding. It was suggested to practice role modelling in order to inculcate professionalism among medical students.  Conclusion: The findings of the study indicated that the professionalism is the core of medical education and necessary for adequate practice therefore, we cannot rely on hidden curriculum for development of professional identity. The study suggests dire requirement for incorporation of study of professionalism and it applications in medical curriculum. Key words: Perceptions, Professionalism, Medical students

    Effect of Different Preparations of Fluoride Gel on Salivary pH of Albino Rats

    Objective: To evaluate the effect of different preparations of fluoride gels on the salivary pH of albino rats. Material and Methods: This experimental study consisted of 40 Albino rats randomly divided into four equal groups. Group A was the control group and received no intervention. Experimental group B received a topical application of 0.2% sodium fluoride gel. Experimental group C received topical application of stannous fluoride gel 0.4%. Experimental group D received topical application of APF gel (1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride gel). The different preparations of the gels were applied once daily for 4 minutes on the occlusal surface of the right maxillary molars for 14 days. Salivary pH values were recorded immediately after the application of gels with the help of pH paper on day 1 and day 14. Results: There was a significant difference in the pH level of groups B, C and D after 14 days of fluoride application (p < 0.05). The non-parametric Kruskal Wallis test was applied for the comparison between the groups. Conclusion: This study concluded that all the fluoride gels after administration caused the acidic pH of saliva with the most acidic effect produced by APF gel

    Un estudio sobre el uso de combinaciones de palabras en estudiantes de administración

    Previous studies have reported lack of collocational competence and difficulties among English as a second language (ESL) learners. However, collocation is crucial in second language acquisition. This research examined the receptive and productive knowledge of collocations among the business students of COMSATS University Islamabad Vehari Campus who studied ESL. It also investigated the gap in the use of collocations at a receptive and productive level. The sample included 61 males and 39 females out of the total sample size of 100. Employing a quantitative approach, we gathered the data through a questionnaire and two collocations tests, and we analysed them via SPSS version 20. The overall result of the collocation test indicated that 66.4% of the respondents had the correct answer at the receptive level compared with only 33.7% at the productive level. Moreover, the statistical result presented a great gap in the ability to utilise collocations at the productive and receptive levels. This result also affirmed that despite their ability to understand the collocations, the students had difficulties in identifying proper English collocations confidently. Local and native language experiences might be one of the reasons that caught the students from being more confident in identifying the English collocations.Previos estudios han informado de la falta de competencia en la ubicación y las dificultades entre los estudiantes de inglés como segunda lengua (ESL). Sin embargo, las combinaciones de palabras son cruciales en la adquisición de un segundo idioma. Esta investigación examinó el conocimiento receptivo y productivo de las combinaciones de palabras entre los estudiantes de administración de la Universidad COMSATS de Islamabad (Campus de Vehari) que estudiaron ESL. También investigó la brecha en el uso de estas combinaciones a nivel receptivo y productivo. La muestra incluyó 61 hombres y 39 mujeres, de un total de 100. Empleando un enfoque cuantitativo, recopilamos los datos mediante un cuestionario y dos pruebas de colocaciones, y los analizamos por medio del programa SPSS versión 20. El resultado general de la prueba de colocación indicó que el 66,4 % de los encuestados tenía la respuesta correcta a nivel receptivo y solo el 33,7 % a nivel productivo. Además, el resultado estadístico presentó una gran brecha en la capacidad de utilizar combinaciones de palabras en los niveles productivo y receptivo.
