    Development of an Aquatic Exercise Training Protocol for the Asthmatic Population

    The purpose of this article is to propose creation of a consistent, measureable 12-week aquatic exercise progression for individuals diagnosed with asthma. An aquatic exercise option not requiring swim skills may offer real value, but no previous literature explicitly describes a standardized non-swimming aquatic exercise progression. Participants were diagnosed, medically managed asthmatics in a rural community. Guidelines set forth by AEA and ACSM were used in the development of the exercise program and progression. By the end of the 12 weeks, instructors were challenging participants with multi-level travel sets and complex timed sequences meeting programmatic goals for exercise intensity progression. In conclusion, this 12-week aquatic exercise protocol could effectively be prescribed by aquatic exercise specialists to increase physical activity in an asthmatic population. The design may be used in research studies as a consistent and measurable treatment protocol

    Communication: Vibrational and vibronic coherences in the two dimensional spectroscopy of coupled electron-nuclear motion

    We theoretically investigate the photon-echo spectroscopy of coupled electron-nuclear quantum dynamics. Two situations are treated. In the first case, the Born-Oppenheimer (adiabatic) approximation holds. It is then possible to interpret the two-dimensional (2D) spectra in terms of vibrational motion taking place in different electronic states. In particular, pure vibrational coherences which are related to oscillations in the time-dependent third-order polarization can be identified. This concept fails in the second case, where strong non-adiabatic coupling leads to the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer-approximation. Then, the 2D-spectra reveal a complicated vibronic structure and vibrational coherences cannot be disentangled from the electronic motion

    This article reviews post-1974 scholarly literature on women’s leadership in academic libraries, with the emphasis on the United States. The purpose of this synthesis is to highlight research areas and themes that have significantly expanded the profession’s knowledge about gender and its impact at the top administrative level. The article starts with a brief overview of theories of gender and leadership before tracing scholarship on the gendered career patterns singled out in Schiller’s work (1974). The article then focuses on additional issues related to gender and library administration, including leadership styles, perceptions of differences between male and female leaders, and the lack of diversity among academic library women directors

    The Impact of an Aquatic Exercise Protocol on Physiologic Measures Within an Asthmatic Population

    Individuals suffering from asthma typically have subnormal exercise tolerance and poor physical fitness. The purpose of this case series study was to examine the impact of a new aquatic exercise protocol on physiological variables in a group of asthmatics. Participants were medically diagnosed and managed asthmatics in a rural community. A total of 8 males and 12 females were accepted into the study with 7 males and 9 females completing the 12-week study. Physiological measures were taken pre- and posttreatment with paired t-tests used for analyses. Increases in VO2max (pre-treatment mean (M) = 31.244 SD = 9.772; post-treatment M = 33.431, SD = 10.387; partial ç²= .257, p \u3c 0.038); lean body muscle mass (pre-treatment M = 119.606, SD = 28.210; post-treatment M = 122.012, SD = 30.475; partial ç²= .237, p \u3c 0.047); and blood glucose (pre-treatment M = 83.937, SD = 7.584; post-treatment M = 89.812, SD = 7.799; partial ç²= .603, p \u3c 0.000), were seen from pre- to posttreatment. The protocol was well tolerated and enjoyed by the participants suggesting it is useful in the asthmatic population. Our results predicted a need for larger sample size in future research ranging from 8 to 218 participants depending upon the dependent measure

    MALDI-TOF MS for the identification of cultivable organic-degrading bacteria in contaminated groundwater near unconventional natural gas extraction sites

    Groundwater quality and quantity is of extreme importance as it is a source of drinking water in the United States. One major concern has emerged due to the possible contamination of groundwater from unconventional oil and natural gas extraction activities. Recent studies have been performed to understand if these activities are causing groundwater contamination, particularly with respect to exogenous hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds. The impact of contaminants on microbial ecology is an area to be explored as alternatives for water treatment are necessary. In this work, we identified cultivable organic-degrading bacteria in groundwater in close proximity to unconventional natural gas extraction. Pseudomonas stutzeri and Acinetobacter haemolyticus were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), which proved to be a simple, fast, and reliable method. Additionally, the potential use of the identified bacteria in water and/or wastewater bioremediation was studied by determining the ability of these microorganisms to degrade toluene and chloroform.     Laser-Spectroscopic Investigation of OH-Radical Concentrations in the Exhaust Plane of Jet Engines

    Hydroxyl radical (OH) emissions are relevant for oxidation reactions in the post flame chemistry of exhaust gases emitted from jet engines. No direct measurements of OH concentrations are available to date due to the low abundance and the short lifetime of this radical species. The first application of a combined technique based on Raman scattering and laser_induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrometry is presented here for measurements in the exhaust gases of a commercial jet engine operated in a test rig. From the measurements, upper limits for OH concentrations in the exit plane were determined in the range of 90 ppbv for take off and 80 ppbv for ap_idle. The values are significantly below the predictions of model calculations based on HONO and HNO3 in_flight concentration measurements presented recently.     Isospin dependence of relative yields of K+K^+ and K0K^0 mesons at 1.528 AGeV

    Results on K+K^+ and K0K^0 meson production in 4496^{96}_{44}Ru + 4496^{96}_{44}Ru and 4096^{96}_{40}Zr + 4096^{96}_{40}Zr collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.528AA GeV, measured with the FOPI detector at GSI-Darmstadt, are investigated as a possible probe of isospin effects in high density nuclear matter. The measured double ratio (K+/K0K^+/K^0)Ru_{Ru}/(K+/K0K^+/K^0)Zr_{Zr} is compared to the predictions of a thermal model and a Relativistic Mean Field transport model using two different collision scenarios and under different assumptions on the stiffness of the symmetry energy. We find a good agreement with the thermal model prediction and the assumption of a soft symmetry energy for infinite nuclear matter while more realistic transport simulations of the collisions show a similar agreement with the data but also exhibit a reduced sensitivity to the symmetry term.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in Phys.     Isospin-tracing: A probe of non-equilibrium in central heavy-ion collisions

    Four different combinations of 4496^{96}_{44}Ru and 4096^{96}_{40}Zr nuclei, both as projectile and target, were investigated at the same bombarding energy of 400AA MeV using a 4π4 \pi detector. The degree of isospin mixing between projectile and target nucleons is mapped across a large portion of the phase space using two different isospin-tracer observables, the number of measured protons and the t/3He{\rm t}/^{3}{\rm He} yield ratio. The experimental results show that the global equilibrium is not reached even in the most central collisions. Quantitative measures of stopping and mixing are extracted from the data. They are found to exhibit a quite strong sensitivity to the in-medium (n,n) cross section used in microscopic transport calculations.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 figures (ps files), submitted to Phys.
