    Multisensory integration in complex rhythmic motor tasks

    This publication-based thesis aimed to shed further light on the contributions of visual and auditory information to the execution of complex rhythmic motor tasks. To this end, a series of three empirical studies was designed. The first two studies were conducted in the experimental setting of long jumping – a task that does not only require high precision but also high velocity to leap as far as possible. Within the first study, we aimed to examine visual regulation during the long jump run-up using portable eye-tracking technology. Previous research on the topic of visual regulation in long jumping has identified a universal instance in participants’ gait behavior which introduces a rapid decrease in step variability. Since then, this parameter was considered synonymous with the (gait-based) onset of visual regulation. However, an investigation of actual visual behavior by means of direct measures was still pending to date. Hence, the first study was designed to identify a potential equivalent to the gait-based parameter within participants’ gaze behavior. Results revealed that the moment of the longest gaze on the take-off board coincided with the occurrence of the well-established gait parameter. Given that i) the gait-based visual regulation parameter has been associated with a reduction in footfall variability and ii) current research advocates the idea that fixations of longer duration facilitate motor actions, one might speculate that the longest gaze on the take-off board might as well serve the reduction of movement variability. While the parameter of visual regulation could be characterized in more detail within the first empirical investigation, the impact of other modalities has been neglected so far. However, current research is promoting the idea that, apart from visual information, auditory information might as well be crucial for the execution of motor tasks. ..

    Auditory perception dominates in motor rhythm reproduction

    It is commonly agreed that vision is more sensitive to spatial information, while audition is more sensitive to temporal information. When both visual and auditory information are available simultaneously, the modality appropriateness hypothesis predicts that, depending on the task, the most appropriate (i.e., reliable) modality dominates perception. While previous research mainly focused on discrepant information from different sensory inputs to scrutinize the modality appropriateness hypothesis, the current study aimed at investigating the modality appropriateness hypothesis when multimodal information was provided in a nondiscrepant and simultaneous manner. To this end, participants performed a temporal rhythm reproduction task for which the auditory modality is known to be the most appropriate. The experiment comprised an auditory (i.e., beeps), a visual (i.e., flashing dots), and an audiovisual condition (i.e., beeps and dots simultaneously). Moreover, constant as well as variable interstimulus intervals were implemented. Results revealed higher accuracy and lower variability in the auditory condition for both interstimulus interval types when compared to the visual condition. More importantly, there were no differences between the auditory and the audiovisual condition across both interstimulus interval types. This indicates that the auditory modality dominated multimodal perception in the task, whereas the visual modality was disregarded and hence did not add to reproduction performance

    The Effect of Visual Feedback on Lumbar Spinal Mobility in Subjects with Low Back Pain

    Purpose: This study was designed to determine if visual feedback via a laser pointer would enhance quality of lumbar mobility exercise in quadruped. A secondary aim of this study was to compare mobility assessed using the valid and reliable Modified-Modified Schober Test (MMST) to mobility measured indirectly using the laser pointer. Subjects: 69 Methods: Adult participants with no low back pain (LBP) in the previous year or back surgery were randomly assigned to one of three groups for two sessions: Control (blindfolded during both), Intervention A (blindfolded then visual feedback), or Intervention B (visual feedback then blindfolded). Baseline standing lumbar flexion was assessed, then each participant assumed quadruped over a longitudinally oriented 44-inch floor grid while wearing a laser pointer attached to a waist belt. Participants performed alternating quadruped lumbar flexion (QLF) and extension (QLE), with each session \u3e48hrs apart. Visual feedback was provided via laser pointer. All attempts were video recorded. Results: Training using a laser pointer did not have a significant impact on lumbar excursion in quadruped (p = .106, p = .681, respectively). Mobility scores remained consistent for the control (p = .823) and intervention groups (p = .124). A moderate-to-strong correlation (r = .638) was found between MMST values and the average QLF. Conclusions: Visual feedback training using a laser transit was ineffective at increasing lumbar mobility. MMST flexion values were moderately correlated with QLF performance, suggesting the laser light transit shows potential to be used as a means of quantifying lumbar flexion range of motion

    Undergraduate education in palliative medicine in Germany: a longitudinal perspective on curricular and infrastructural development

    Background: In 2009, palliative medicine became an integrated and compulsory part of undergraduate training in Germany by legislation. After a transitional period, all medical faculties were required to provide adequate teaching with an according examination and certification procedure. In parallel, we conducted bi-annual surveys on all medical faculties in Germany to examine for potential discrepancies between the implementation process and their intended consequences on teaching time and content. Methods: Four consecutive bi-annual surveys (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012) of all 36 medical faculties in Germany were performed, using purposively for this study developed questionnaires. Likert scales and closed questions were analyzed descriptively. Results: Medical Faculty response rate increased from 50 % in 2006 to 88.9 % in 2012. Teaching coordinators in palliative medicine primarily had an anesthesiology or internal medicine background. There was a noted increase over time of the involvement of specialized palliative care units (PCUs) as providing the setting for education. The number of faculties that were able to offer a complete 16 weeks of training in palliative medicine during the "final year" rose steadily. In addition, increased patient-centered teaching formats have been implemented over time. The faculties which offered innovative teaching formats with actors as patients (standardized patient interaction) increased, as did the total number of mandatory examinations. The number of faculties that provided compulsory teaching in a condensed manner within a single academic year increased sharply from 3 of 31 responding faculties in 2010 to 19 of 32 responding faculties in 2012. Conclusions: Until now, teaching conditions and structures in palliative medicine in Germany have proven to be extraordinarily heterogeneous. Although professorships ("Chairs") in palliative medicine proved to be particularly beneficial and supportive in curricular and structural development, only a minority of faculties provide leading academic positions in palliative medicine

    Short-term effects of air pollution: a panel study of blood markers in patients with chronic pulmonary disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Growing evidence indicates that ambient air pollution is associated with exacerbation of chronic diseases like chronic pulmonary disease. A prospective panel study was conducted to investigate short-term changes of blood markers of inflammation and coagulation in response to daily changes in air pollution in Erfurt, Germany. 12 clinical visits were scheduled and blood parameters were measured in 38 male patients with chronic pulmonary disease during winter 2001/2002. Additive mixed models with random patient intercept were applied, adjusting for trend, weekday, and meteorological parameters. Hourly data on ultrafine particles (UFP, 0.01-0.1 μm), accumulation mode particles (ACP, 0.1-1.0 μm), PM<sub>10 </sub>(particulate matter <10 μm in diameter), elemental (EC) and organic carbon (OC), gaseous pollutants (nitrogen monoxide [NO], nitrogen dioxide [NO<sub>2</sub>], carbon monoxide [CO], and sulphur dioxide [SO<sub>2</sub>]) were collected at a central monitoring site and meteorological data were received from an official network. For each person and visit the individual 24-hour average of pollutants immediately preceding the blood withdrawal (lag 0) up to day 5 (lag1-4) and 5-day running means were calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Increased levels of fibrinogen were observed for an increase in one interquartile range of UFP, PM<sub>10</sub>, EC, OC, CO, and NO revealing the strongest effect for lag 3. E-selectin increased in association with ACP and PM<sub>10 </sub>with a delay of one day. The ACP effect was also seen with the 5-day-mean. The pattern found for D-dimer was inconsistent. Prothrombin fragment 1+2 decreased with lag 4 consistently for all particulate pollutants. Von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF) showed a consistent decrease in association with almost all air pollutants with all lags except for lag 0. No associations were found for C-reactive protein, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, serum amyloid A and factor VII.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest that elevated concentrations of air pollution are associated with changes in some blood markers of inflammation and coagulation in patients with chronic pulmonary disease. The clinical implications of these findings need further investigation.</p

    Allogeneic Non-Adherent Bone Marrow Cells Facilitate Hematopoietic Recovery but Do Not Lead to Allogeneic Engraftment

    Background Non adherent bone marrow derived cells (NA-BMCs) have recently been described to give rise to multiple mesenchymal phenotypes and have an impact in tissue regeneration. Therefore, the effects of murine bone marrow derived NA-BMCs were investigated with regard to engraftment capacities in allogeneic and syngeneic stem cell transplantation using transgenic, human CD4+, murine CD4?/?, HLA-DR3+ mice. Methodology/Principal Findings Bone marrow cells were harvested from C57Bl/6 and Balb/c wild-type mice, expanded to NA-BMCs for 4 days and characterized by flow cytometry before transplantation in lethally irradiated recipient mice. Chimerism was detected using flow cytometry for MHC-I (H-2D[b], H-2K[d]), mu/huCD4, and huHLA-DR3). Culturing of bone marrow cells in a dexamethasone containing DMEM medium induced expansion of non adherent cells expressing CD11b, CD45, and CD90. Analysis of the CD45+ showed depletion of CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, and CD117+ cells. Expanded syngeneic and allogeneic NA-BMCs were transplanted into triple transgenic mice. Syngeneic NA-BMCs protected 83% of mice from death (n = 8, CD4+ donor chimerism of 5.8±2.4% [day 40], P<.001). Allogeneic NA-BMCs preserved 62.5% (n = 8) of mice from death without detectable hematopoietic donor chimerism. Transplantation of syngeneic bone marrow cells preserved 100%, transplantation of allogeneic bone marrow cells 33% of mice from death. Conclusions/Significance NA-BMCs triggered endogenous hematopoiesis and induced faster recovery compared to bone marrow controls. These findings may be of relevance in the refinement of strategies in the treatment of hematological malignancies

Pesquisa descritiva, de natureza qualitativa, da qual participaram dez companheiros de mulheres que vivenciam o climatério. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista, analisados segundo os preceitos da análise de conteúdo. O material foi agrupado em uma categoria de análise que versa sobre modificações ocorridas na vida da mulher em decorrência do climatério na percepção de seu companheiro. Estes identificam os sintomas clínicos relacionados ao climatério, destacando-se a perda da libido, irritabilidade e fogachos. Mencionam que o relacionamento conjugal se mantém, porém possuem pouca tolerância diante das repercussões advindas dos sintomas climatéricos de suas companheiras. Os profissionais de enfermagem devem direcionar intervenções no sentido de, também, orientar os homens acerca das alterações orgânicas e psíquicas decorrentes do climatério vivenciadas por suas mulheres para que possam compreender essa situação e aprender a lidar com ela.     Consistent cosmic shear in the face of systematics: a B-mode analysis of KiDS-450, DES-SV and CFHTLenS

    We analyse three public cosmic shear surveys; the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-450), the Dark Energy Survey (DES-SV) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). Adopting the “COSEBIs” statistic to cleanly and completely separate the lensing E-modes from the non-lensing B-modes, we detect B-modes in KiDS-450 and CFHTLenS at the level of ∼2.7σ. For DES-SV we detect B-modes at the level of 2.8σ in a non-tomographic analysis, increasing to a 5.5σB-mode detection in a tomographic analysis. In order to understand the origin of these detected B-modes we measure the B-mode signature of a range of different simulated systematics including PSF leakage, random but correlated PSF modelling errors, camera-based additive shear bias and photometric redshift selection bias. We show that any correlation between photometric-noise and the relative orientation of the galaxy to the point-spread-function leads to an ellipticity selection bias in tomographic analyses. This work therefore introduces a new systematic for future lensing surveys to consider. We find that the B-modes in DES-SV appear similar to a superposition of the B-mode signatures from all of the systematics simulated. The KiDS-450 and CFHTLenS B-mode measurements show features that are consistent with a repeating additive shear bias
