Mode decomposition and unitarity in quantum cosmology, Talk given at the Second Meeting on Constrained Dynamics and Quantum gravity, Santa Margherita Ligure, September 17-21, 1996
Contrary to common belief, there are perspectives for generalizing the notion
of positive and negative frequency in minisuperspace quantum cosmology, even
when the wave equation does not admit symmetries. We outline a strategy in
doing so when the potential is positive. Also, an underlying unitarity
structure shows up. Starting in the framework of the Klein-Gordon type
quantization, I am led to a result that relies on global features on the model,
and that is possibly related to structures encountered in the refined algebraic

Symmetrical and asymmetrical separations about a yawed cone
Three dimensional flow separations about a circular cone were investigated in the Mach number range 0.6 - 1.8. The cone was tested in the Ames 1.8 by 1.8 m wind tunnel at Reynolds numbers based on the cone length from 4,500,000 to 13,500,000 under nominally zero heat transfer conditions. Results indicate that: (1) the lee-side separated flow develops from initially symmetrically disposed and near-conical separation lines at angle of incidence/cone semiangle equal to approximately 1, with the free shear layers eventually rolling up into tightly coiled vortices at all Mach numbers; (2) the onset of asymmetry of the lee-side separated flow about the mean pitch plane is sensitive to Mach number, Reynolds number, and the nose bluntness; and (3) as the Mach number is increased beyond 1.8, the critical angle of incidence for the onset of asymmetry increases until at about M = 2.75 there is no longer any significant side force development
Interaction of Hawking radiation with static sources in deSitter and Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetimes
We study and look for similarities between the response rates and of a static scalar source
with constant proper acceleration interacting with a massless,
conformally coupled Klein-Gordon field in (i) deSitter spacetime, in the
Euclidean vacuum, which describes a thermal flux of radiation emanating from
the deSitter cosmological horizon, and in (ii) Schwarzschild-deSitter
spacetime, in the Gibbons-Hawking vacuum, which describes thermal fluxes of
radiation emanating from both the hole and the cosmological horizons,
respectively, where is the cosmological constant and is the black
hole mass. After performing the field quantization in each of the above
spacetimes, we obtain the response rates at the tree level in terms of an
infinite sum of zero-energy field modes possessing all possible angular
momentum quantum numbers. In the case of deSitter spacetime, this formula is
worked out and a closed, analytical form is obtained. In the case of
Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetime such a closed formula could not be obtained,
and a numerical analysis is performed. We conclude, in particular, that and do not coincide in
general, but tend to each other when or . Our
results are also contrasted and shown to agree (in the proper limits) with

SO(4) Invariant States in Quantum Cosmology
The phenomenon of linearisation instability is identified in models of
quantum cosmology that are perturbations of mini-superspace models. In
particular, constraints that are second order in the perturbations must be
imposed on wave functions calculated in such models. It is shown explicitly
that in the case of a model which is a perturbation of the mini-superspace
which has spatial sections these constraints imply that any wave
functions calculated in this model must be SO(4) invariant. (This replaces the

On the response of detectors in classical electromagnetic backgrounds
I study the response of a detector that is coupled non-linearly to a
quantized complex scalar field in different types of classical electromagnetic
backgrounds. Assuming that the quantum field is in the vacuum state, I show
that, when in {\it inertial} motion, the detector responds {\it only} when the
electromagnetic background produces particles. However, I find that the
response of the detector is {\it not} proportional to the number of particles

AMPTE/CCE‐SCATHA simultaneous observations of substorm‐associated magnetic fluctuations
This study examines substorm-associated magnetic field fluctuations observed by the AMPTE/CCE and SCATHA satellites in the near-Earth tail. Three tail reconfiguration events are selected, one event on August 28, 1986, and two consecutive events on August 30, 1986. The fractal analysis was applied to magnetic field measurements of each satellite. The result indicates that (1) the amplitude of the fluctuation of the north-south magnetic component is larger, though not overwhelmingly, than the amplitudes of the other two components and (2) the magnetic fluctuations do have a characteristic timescale, which is several times the proton gyroperiod. In the examined events the satellite separation was less than 10 times the proton gyroradius. Nevertheless, the comparison between the AMPTE/CCE and SCATHA observations indicates that (3) there was a noticeable time delay between the onsets of the magnetic fluctuations at the two satellite positions, which is too long to ascribe to the propagation of a fast magnetosonic wave, and (4) the coherence of the magnetic fluctuations was low in the August 28, 1986, event and the fluctuations had different characteristic timescales in the first event of August 30, 1986, whereas some similarities can be found for the second event of August 30, 1986. Result 1 indicates that perturbation electric currents associated with the magnetic fluctuations tend to flow parallel to the tail current sheet and are presumably related to the reduction of the tail current intensity. Results 2 and 3 suggest that the excitation of the magnetic fluctuations and therefore the trigger of the tail current disruption is a kinetic process in which ions play an important role. It is inferred from results 3 and 4 that the characteristic spatial scale of the associated instability is of the order of the proton gyroradius or even shorter, and therefore the tail current disruption is described as a system of chaotic filamentary electric currents. However, result 4 suggests that the nature of the tail current disruption can vary from event to event
Tree-level Scattering Amplitude in de Sitter Space
In previous papers [1,2], it was proved that a covariant quantization of the
minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space is achieved through addition
of the negative norm states. This causal approach which eliminates the infrared
divergence, was generalized further to the calculation of the graviton
propagator in de Sitter space [3] and one-loop effective action for scalar
field in a general curved space-time [4]. This method gives a natural
renormalization of the above problems. Pursuing this approach, in the present
paper the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the scalar field, with one
graviton exchange, has been calculated in de Sitter space. It is shown that the
infrared divergence disappears and the theory automatically reaches a
renormalized solution of the problem.Comment: 6 page
improving performance of feature extraction in sfm algorithms for 3d sparse point cloud
Abstract. The use of Structure-from-Motion algorithms is a common practice to obtain a rapid photogrammetric reconstruction. However, the performance of these algorithms is limited by the fact that in some conditions the resulting point clouds present low density. This is the case when processing materials from historical archives, such as photographs and videos, which generates only sparse point clouds due to the lack of necessary information in the photogrammetric reconstruction. This paper explores ways to improve the performance of open source SfM algorithms in order to guarantee the presence of strategic feature points in the resulting point cloud, even if sparse. To reach this objective, a photogrammetric workflow is proposed to process historical images. The first part of the workflow presents a method that allows the manual selection of feature points during the photogrammetric process. The second part evaluates the metric quality of the reconstruction on the basis of a comparison with a point cloud that has a different density from the sparse point cloud. The workflow was applied to two different case studies. Transformations of wall paintings of the Karanlık church in Cappadocia were analysed thanks to the comparison of 3D model resulting from archive photographs and a recent survey. Then a comparison was performed between the state of the Komise building in Japan, before and after restoration. The findings show that the method applied allows the metric scale and evaluation of the model also in bad condition and when only low-density point clouds are available. Moreover, this tool should be of great use for both art and architecture historians and geomatics experts, to study the evolution of Cultural Heritage
Agentes infecciosos em ateromas coronarianos: um possível papel na patogênese da ruptura da placa e infarto agudo do miocárdio
In this review we report our recent findings of histopathological features of plaque instability and the association with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) infection, studying thrombosed coronary artery segments (CAS) of patients who died due to acute myocardial infarction. Vulnerable plaques are known to be associated with fat atheromas and inflammation of the plaque. Here we demonstrated that vulnerability is also related with focal positive vessel remodeling that maintains relatively well preserved lumen even in the presence of large atheromatous plaques. This phenomena may explain why the cinecoronariography may not detect large and dangerous vulnerable plaques. Greater amount of these bacteria in vulnerable plaques is associated with adventitial inflammation and positive vessel remodeling: the mean numbers of lymphocytes were significantly higher in adventitia than in the plaque, good direct correlation was obtained between numbers of CD20 B cells and numbers of CP infected cells in adventitia, and between % area of MP-DNA in the plaque and cross sectional area of the vessel, suggesting a cause-effect relationship. Mycoplasma is a bacterium that needs cholesterol for proliferation and may increase virulence of other infectious agents. In conclusion, co-infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae may represent an important co-factor for plaque instability, leading to coronary plaque thrombosis and acute myocardial infarction, since larger amount of these bacteria strongly correlated with histological signs of more vulnerability of the plaque. The search of CMV and Helicobacter pilori in these tissues resulted negative.Nesta revisão relatamos recentes achados nossos sobre aspectos histológicos de instabilidade da placa e a associação com Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) e Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP), estudando segmentos de artéria coronária trombosados de pacientes que faleceram por infarto agudo do miocárdio. Placas vulneráveis são conhecidas como sendo placas gordurosas e com inflamação. Aqui demonstramos que a vulnerabilidade está também relacionada com remodelamento positivo do vaso o qual pode preservar a luz do vaso mesmo na presença de uma placa de ateroma grande. Grande quantidade dessas bactérias em placas vulneráveis está associada a inflamação da adventícia e remodelamento positivo do vaso: o número médio de linfócitos foi significativamente maior na adventícia do que na placa, e boas correlações diretas foram obtidas entre os números médios de células B CD20 e os números de células infectadas por CP na adventícia, e entre as % de áreas positivas para MP na placa e as áreas em secção transversal dos respectivos vasos, sugerindo uma relação de causa - efeito entre esses agentes infecciosos e vulnerabilidade da placa. Micoplasma é uma bactéria que necessita colesterol para a proliferação e pode aumentar a virulência de outros agentes infecciosos. Em conclusão, co-infecção por Mycoplasma pneumoniae e Chlamydia pneumoniae pode representar um importante co-fator de instabilidade da placa, levando a trombose da placa coronariana e infarto agudo do miocárdio, pois a maior quantidade dessas bactérias mostrou forte correlação com sinais histológicos de maior vulnerabilidade da placa. A pesquisa nesses tecidos de CMV e Helicobacter pilori foi negativa
Interaction of Hawking radiation with static sources outside a Schwarzschild black hole
We show that the response rate of (i) a static source interacting with
Hawking radiation of massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime (with the
Unruh vacuum) and that of (ii) a uniformly accelerated source with the same
proper acceleration in Minkowski spacetime (with the Minkowski vacuum) are
equal. We show that this equality will not hold if the Unruh vacuum is replaced
by the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. It is verified that the source responds to the
Hawking radiation near the horizon as if it were at rest in a thermal bath in
Minkowski spacetime with the same temperature. It is also verified that the
response rate in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum approaches that in Minkowski
spacetime with the same temperature far away from the black hole. Finally, we
