    Tool support for security-oriented virtual research collaborations

    Collaboration is at the heart of e-Science and e-Research more generally. Successful collaborations must address both the needs of the end user researchers and the providers that make resources available. Usability and security are two fundamental requirements that are demanded by many collaborations and both concerns must be considered from both the researcher and resource provider perspective. In this paper we outline tools and methods developed at the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) that provide users with seamless, secure access to distributed resources through security-oriented research environments, whilst also allowing resource providers to define and enforce their own local access and usage policies through intuitive user interfaces. We describe these tools and illustrate their application in the ESRC-funded Data Management through e-Social Science (DAMES) and the JISC-funded SeeGEO projects

    Supporting security-oriented, inter-disciplinary research: crossing the social, clinical and geospatial domains

    How many people have had a chronic disease for longer than 5-years in Scotland? How has this impacted upon their choices of employment? Are there any geographical clusters in Scotland where a high-incidence of patients with such long-term illness can be found? How does the life expectancy of such individuals compare with the national averages? Such questions are important to understand the health of nations and the best ways in which health care should be delivered and measured for their impact and success. In tackling such research questions, e-Infrastructures need to provide tailored, secure access to an extensible range of distributed resources including primary and secondary e-Health clinical data; social science data, and geospatial data sets amongst numerous others. In this paper we describe the security models underlying these e-Infrastructures and demonstrate their implementation in supporting secure, federated access to a variety of distributed and heterogeneous data sets exploiting the results of a variety of projects at the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) at the University of Glasgow

    A ‘criminal personas’ approach to countering criminal creativity

    This paper describes a pilot study of a ‘criminal personas’ approach to countering criminal creativity. The value of the personas approach has been assessed by comparing the identification of criminal opportunity, through ‘traditional’ brainstorming and then through ‘criminal personas’ brainstorming The method involved brainstorm sessions with Computer Forensics Practitioners and with Product Designers, where they were required to generate criminal scenarios, select the most serious criminal opportunities, and propose means of countering them. The findings indicated that there was merit in further research in the development and application of the ‘criminal personas’ approach. The generation of criminal opportunity ideas and proposal of counter criminal solutions were both greater when the brainstorm approach involved the group responding through their given criminal personas

    Clinical evaluation of two dark blood methods of late gadolinium quantification of ischemic scar

    BACKGROUND: Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging was validated for diagnosis and quantification of myocardial infarction (MI). Despite good contrast between scar and normal myocardium, contrast between blood pool and myocardial scar can be limited. Dark blood LGE sequences attempt to overcome this issue. PURPOSE: To evaluate T1 rho (T1 ρ)-prepared dark blood sequence and compare to blood nulled (BN) phase sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR) and standard myocardium nulled (MN) PSIR for detection and quantification of scar. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Thirty patients with prior MI. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Patients underwent identical 1.5 T MRI protocols. Following routine LGE imaging, a slice with scar, remote myocardium, and blood pool was selected. PSIR LGE was repeated with inversion time set to MN, to BN, and T1 ρ FIDDLE (flow-independent dark-blood delayed enhancement) in random order. ASSESSMENT: Three observers. Qualitative assessment of confidence scores in scar detection and degree of transmurality. Quantitative assessment of myocardial scar mass (grams), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) measurements between scar, blood pool, and myocardium. STATISTICAL TESTS: Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni correction, coefficient of variation, and the Cohen Îș statistic. RESULTS: CNRscar-blood was significantly increased for both BN (27.1 ± 10.4) and T1 ρ (30.2 ± 15.1) compared with MN (15.3 ± 8.4 P < 0.001 for both sequences). There was no significant difference in CNRscar-myo between BN (55.9 ± 17.3) and MN (51.1 ± 17.8 P = 0.512); both had significantly higher CNRscar-myo compared with the T1 ρ (42.6 ± 16.9 P = 0.007 and P = 0.014, respectively). No significant difference in scar size between LGE methods: MN (2.28 ± 1.58 g) BN (2.16 ± 1.57 g) and T1 ρ (2.29 ± 2.5 g). Confidence scores were significantly higher for BN (3.87 ± 0.346) compared with MN (3.1 ± 0.76 P < 0.001) and T1 ρ (3.20 ± 0.71 P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION: PSIR with inversion time (TI) set for blood nulling and the T1 ρ LGE sequence demonstrated significantly higher scar to blood CNR compared with routine MN. PSIR with TI set for blood nulling demonstrated significantly higher reader confidence scores compared with routine MN and T1 ρ LGE, suggesting routine adoption of a BN PSIR approach might be appropriate for LGE imaging.     Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect and Berry Phase in Positively Charged Fullerene I. Basic Considerations

    We study the Jahn-Teller effect of positive fullerene ions 2^2C60+_{60}^{+} and 1^1C602+_{60}^{2+}. The aim is to discover if this case, in analogy with the negative ion, possesses a Berry phase or not, and what are the consequences on dynamical Jahn-Teller quantization. Working in the linear and spherical approximation, we find no Berry phase in 1^1C602+_{60}^{2+}, and presence/absence of Berry phase for coupling of one L=2L=2 hole to an L=4L=4/L=2L=2 vibration. We study in particular the special equal-coupling case (g2=g4g_2=g_4), which is reduced to the motion of a particle on a 5-dimensional sphere. In the icosahedral molecule, the final outcome assesses the presence/absence of a Berry phase of π\pi for the huh_u hole coupled to GgG_g/HhH_h vibrations.     Scale-free static and dynamical correlations in melts of monodisperse and Flory-distributed homopolymers: A review of recent bond-fluctuation model studies

    It has been assumed until very recently that all long-range correlations are screened in three-dimensional melts of linear homopolymers on distances beyond the correlation length Ο\xi characterizing the decay of the density fluctuations. Summarizing simulation results obtained by means of a variant of the bond-fluctuation model with finite monomer excluded volume interactions and topology violating local and global Monte Carlo moves, we show that due to an interplay of the chain connectivity and the incompressibility constraint, both static and dynamical correlations arise on distances r≫Οr \gg \xi. These correlations are scale-free and, surprisingly, do not depend explicitly on the compressibility of the solution. Both monodisperse and (essentially) Flory-distributed equilibrium polymers are considered.Comment: 60 pages, 49 figure

    Learners’ use of communication strategies in text-based and video-based synchronous computer-mediated communication environments: opportunities for language learning

    This study investigates the different learning opportunities enabled by text-based and video-based synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) from an interactionist perspective. Six Chinese-speaking learners of English and six English-speaking learners of Chinese were paired up as tandem (reciprocal) learning dyads. Each dyad participated in four kinds of interactions, namely, English text-based SCMC, Chinese text-based SCMC, English video-based SCMC and Chinese video-based SCMC. Their use of communication strategies (CSs) were analyzed along with an after-task questionnaire and with stimulated reflection to explore systematically and comprehensively the differences between text-based and video-based SCMC. In addition to the main role of qualitative analysis, the quantitative analysis was undertaken to provide an overview of the relative frequencies of the occurrence of the different strategies and to understand their distribution in the different conditions. A MANOVA was applied to understand to what extent the differences are likely to have occurred by chance. The results showed that learners used CSs differently in text-based and video-based SCMC and indicated different learning opportunities provided by these two modes of SCMC. While text-based SCMC appears to have greater potential for learning target-like language forms, video-based SCMC seems particularly effective for fluency development as well as pronunciation improvement

    Induction and migration of cryptic/defective Salmonella enterica prophages as a consequence of infection with lytic phages is an additional factor in stability of a coevolutionary vector

    The influence of infection of natural isolates of Salmonella enterica with lytic (nonlysogenic) phages on the expression of resident cryptic or defective prophages in host bacteria was studied. The induction of defective/cryptic phages after infection with nonlysogenic phages and packaging of bacterial chromosomal fragments in capsids of defective phages is demonstrated. This may lead to migration and wide distribution of both the genomes of defective phages per se and various fragments of the bacterial chromosome (including pathogenic islands) in new bacterial strains with concomitant change of their properties, the acquired new features of pathogenicity among them.This work was supported by EC PhageVet-P (contract no.     Solar flare prediction using advanced feature extraction, machine learning and feature selection

    YesNovel machine-learning and feature-selection algorithms have been developed to study: (i) the flare prediction capability of magnetic feature (MF) properties generated by the recently developed Solar Monitor Active Region Tracker (SMART); (ii) SMART's MF properties that are most significantly related to flare occurrence. Spatio-temporal association algorithms are developed to associate MFs with flares from April 1996 to December 2010 in order to differentiate flaring and non-flaring MFs and enable the application of machine learning and feature selection algorithms. A machine-learning algorithm is applied to the associated datasets to determine the flare prediction capability of all 21 SMART MF properties. The prediction performance is assessed using standard forecast verification measures and compared with the prediction measures of one of the industry's standard technologies for flare prediction that is also based on machine learning - Automated Solar Activity Prediction (ASAP). The comparison shows that the combination of SMART MFs with machine learning has the potential to achieve more accurate flare prediction than ASAP. Feature selection algorithms are then applied to determine the MF properties that are most related to flare occurrence. It is found that a reduced set of 6 MF properties can achieve a similar degree of prediction accuracy as the full set of 21 SMART MF properties
