Centrifuge Model Test on the Stability of a Clayey Ground Improved by Deep Mixing Method With a Low Improvement Ratio
In this study, centrifuge model tests and numerical analysis were carried out to investigate effects of improvement by deep mixing method (DMM). Model grounds used in model tests were (1) unimproved ground (easel), (2) improved ground with vertical soil columns under toe of slopes (case2), (3) improved ground with vertical soil columns under shoulder of slopes (case3), (4) improved ground with inclined soil columns under toe of slopes (case4), and (5) improved ground with inclined soil columns under shoulder of slopes (case5). The improvement ratio was about 10% for all test cases except easel. The embankment was constructed by sand dropped from the sand hopper under 56g centrifugal field. Following conclusions were obtained from the model tests and the numerical analysis. 1) The deformation of ground was considerably controlled in spite of adopting the low improvement ratio of 10%. 2) For preventing the failure or the large deformation of ground, ground improvement just below the shoulder of the slope was more effective than that bellow toe of the slope. 3) Numerical analysis by means of FEM could be utilized to simulate the tendency of deformation behaviors of soft grounds
Ferromagnetism in a Hubbard model for an atomic quantum wire: a realization of flat-band magnetism from even-membered rings
We have examined a Hubbard model on a chain of squares, which was proposed by
Yajima et al as a model of an atomic quantum wire As/Si(100), to show that the
flat-band ferromagnetism according to a kind of Mielke-Tasaki mechanism should
be realized for an appropriate band filling in such a non-frustrated lattice.
Reflecting the fact that the flat band is not a bottom one, the ferromagnetism
vanishes, rather than intensified, as the Hubbard U is increased. The exact
diagonalization method is used to show that the critical value of U is in a
realistic range. We also discussed the robustness of the magnetism against the

Flat-Band Ferromagnetism in Organic Polymers Designed by a Computer Simulation
By coupling a first-principles, spin-density functional calculation with an
exact diagonalization study of the Hubbard model, we have searched over various
functional groups for the best case for the flat-band ferromagnetism proposed
by R. Arita et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 127202 (2002)] in organic
polymers of five-membered rings. The original proposal (poly-aminotriazole) has
turned out to be the best case among the materials examined, where the reason
why this is so is identified here. We have also found that the ferromagnetism,
originally proposed for the half-filled flat band, is stable even when the band
filling is varied away from the half-filling. All these make the ferromagnetism
proposed here more experimentally inviting.Comment: 11 pages, 13figure

Maintenance of Hair Follicle Immune Privilege Is Linked to Prevention of NK Cell Attack
Hair follicles (HFs) enjoy a relative immune privilege (IP) that is characterized by downregulation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and local expression of potent immunosuppressants. Normally, natural killer (NK) cells attack cells with absent/low MHC class I expression. However, because few perifollicular NK cells are found around healthy human anagen HFs, we asked how HFs escape from NK cell attack. This study suggests that this happens via an active NK cell suppression. Alopecia areata (AA), an organ-specific autoimmune disease thought to result from a collapse of HF-IP, in contrast, shows striking defects in NK cell inhibition/containment. We show that the NK cell inhibitor macrophage migration inhibitory factor is strongly expressed by the HF epithelium, and very few CD56+/NKG2D+ NK cells are observed in and around normal anagen HFs compared to AA with prominent aggregations of CD56+/NKG2D+ NK around AA-HFs. By flow cytometry, many fewer NK function-activating receptors (NKG2D, NKG2C) and significantly more killer cell Ig-like receptors-2D2/2D3 were found to be expressed on peripheral blood CD56+ NK cells of healthy controls than on those of AA patients. In addition, only weak immunoreactivity for MHC class I chain-related A gene was observed in normal anagen HFs compared to AA.
