On the identification of the effect of education on health: a comment on Fonseca et al. (2020)
In this note we revisit the paper by Fonseca et al. (Series 11: 83-103, 2020) who find that education has a positive effect on health. They use several compulsory schooling reforms as instruments for education. Our objective is to replicate this causal finding, so we start by thoroughly discussing their identification strategy. In particular, we emphasize the importance of carefully defining birth cohort groups and using country-specific time trends. Once we take these issues into account, we show that the instrument they use is too weak
Objective: Perinatal asphyxia is the mayor cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The analysis of umbilical arterial cord blood pH remains an objective criterion used to determine the metabolic state of the newborn after birth, and therefore of fetal wellbeing. The aim was to identify the perinatal factors associated with umbilical arterial cord blood pH values. Materials and methods: A descriptive and analytical study was conducted between January 2010 and January 2013 at a tertiary hospital in the Southern Spain. The inclusion criteria were: Uncomplicated pregnancy and vaginal single delivery at term with vertex presentation. Independent variables with greater significance after the univariate analysis were: Age, parity, gestational age, epidural analgesia, birth plan, and episiotomy, duration of first labor stage and oxytocin use. It was considered as a dependent variable the umbilical arterial blood pH values (< = 7.24; > 7.24). The total number of women was 165. Statistical analysis was performed using logistic regression. Results: Epidural analgesia and gestational age more than or equal to 41 weeks have negatively influence the neonatal umbilical cord pH, while having presented a birth plan could have a protective influence. Conclusions: findings of this study provide to the professionals more evidence on the elements that may influence neonatal wellbeing, in order to act accordingly, anticipating risk situations and applying more effective care.
Control Region Variability of Haplogroup C1d and the Tempo of the Peopling of the Americas
Background: Among the founding mitochondrial haplogroups involved in the peopling of the Americas, haplogroup C1d has been viewed as problematic because of its phylogeny and because of the estimates of its antiquity, apparently being much younger than other founding haplogroups. Several recent analyses, based on data from the entire mitochondrial genome, have contributed to an advance in the resolution of these problems. The aim of our analysis is to compare the conclusions drawn from the available HVR-I and HVR-II data for haplogroup C1d with the ones based on whole mitochondrial genomes. Methodology/Principal Findings: HVR-I and HVR-II sequences defined as belonging to haplogroup C1d by standard criteria were gathered from the literature as well as from population studies carried out in Uruguay. Sequence phylogeny was reconstructed using median-joining networks, geographic distribution of lineages was analyzed and the age of the most recent common ancestor estimated using the r-statistic and two different mutation rates. The putative ancestral forms of the haplogroup were found to be more widespread than the derived lineages, and the lineages defined by np 194 were found to be widely distributed and of equivalent age. Conclusions/Significance: The analysis of control region sequences is found to still harbor great potential in tracing microevolutionary phenomena, especially those found to have occurred in more recent times. Based on the geographi

Asymmetric amplification in amino acid sublimation involving racemic compound to conglomerate conversion
A straightforward unprecedented sublimation protocol that reveals both conversion of a racemic compound into a racemic conglomerate and subsequent enantioenrichment has been developed for the proteinogenic amino acid valine. The phenomenon has been observed in closed and open systems, providing insight into asymmetric amplification mechanisms under presumably prebiotic condition
