    Cosmic Evolution and the Theology of Social Solidarity

    This essay is concerned with the intersection between theology, social theory, and evolution. In an effort to sketch an ecologically sound theology of social solidarity and a global ethics, the author examines constructive theologies that take cosmic evolution as a central organizing principle. While the inherent utopianism of Washington Gladden \'s social gospel cannot be revived, his theology provides useful insights into the creative use of scientific and religious discourse for a contemporary democratic theology in search of the common good

    Innovation, R&D and Productivity in the Costa Rican ICT Sector: A Case Study

    This paper addresses the relationships between innovation, research and development (R&D) and productivity in domestic ICT firms in Costa Rica. Factors considered were the types of innovation outputs produced by domestic ICT firms, the relative importance of innovation inputs, the impacts of innovation on firm productivity, the protection of innovations, and impediments to innovation. While most firms engaged in all types of output and input innovations, they appear to be driven by retaining or increasing market share rather than increasing productivity. Half of firms do not formally protect the intellectual property created by their innovations, are not familiar with methods for protecting innovation or the availability of government grants for such purposes, and face barriers associated with the Costa Rican Patent Office. Other impediments include lack of knowledge about financial resources available and scarcity of human resources.     VERITAS and Fermi-LAT Observations of TeV Gamma-Ray Sources Discovered by HAWC in the 2HWC Catalog

    The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) collaboration recently published their 2HWC catalog, listing 39 very high energy (VHE; \u3e100 GeV) gamma-ray sources based on 507 days of observation. Among these, 19 sources are not associated with previously known teraelectronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray sources. We have studied 14 of these sources without known counterparts with VERITAS and Fermi-LAT. VERITAS detected weak gamma-ray emission in the 1 TeV–30 TeV band in the region of DA 495, a pulsar wind nebula coinciding with 2HWC J1953+294, confirming the discovery of the source by HAWC. We did not find any counterpart for the selected 14 new HAWC sources from our analysis of Fermi-LAT data for energies higher than 10 GeV. During the search, we detected gigaelectronvolt (GeV) gamma-ray emission coincident with a known TeV pulsar wind nebula, SNR G54.1+0.3 (VER J1930+188), and a 2HWC source, 2HWC J1930+188. The fluxes for isolated, steady sources in the 2HWC catalog are generally in good agreement with those measured by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. However, the VERITAS fluxes for SNR G54.1+0.3, DA 495, and TeV J2032+4130 are lower than those measured by HAWC, and several new HAWC sources are not detected by VERITAS. This is likely due to a change in spectral shape, source extension, or the influence of diffuse emission in the source region

    MAGIC and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray results on unassociated HAWC sources

    The HAWC Collaboration released the 2HWC catalogue of TeV sources, in which 19 show no association with any known high-energy (HE; E\u3e10 GeV) or very-high-energy (VHE; E\u3e300 GeV) sources. This catalogue motivated follow-up studies by both the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) and Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) observatories with the aim of investigating gamma-ray emission over a broad energy band. In this paper, we report the results from the first joint work between High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC), MAGIC, and Fermi-LAT on three unassociated HAWC sources: 2HWC J2006+341, 2HWC J1907+084*, and 2HWC J1852+013*. Although no significant detection was found in the HE and VHE regimes, this investigation shows that a minimum 1 degree extension (at 95 per cent confidence level) and harder spectrum in the GeV than the one extrapolated from HAWC results are required in the case of 2HWC J1852+013*, whilst a simply minimum extension of 0.16 degrees (at 95 per cent confidence level) can already explain the scenario proposed by HAWC for the remaining sources.     Interactions Between CRs and MCs in the Vicinity of Supernova Remnants

    Supernovae are incredibly energetic events which drive the dynamic state of the interstellar medium and accelerate cosmic rays up to energies of a few PeV. I present multi-wavelength observations constraining the shocks, chemistry, dust grain processing, and magnetic fields in a large sample of supernova remnants interacting with dense clouds. These are among the most luminous Galactic sources detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. Surprisingly, spectral breaks are seen between GeV and TeV energies. Radio spectral breaks have also been detected for a few remnants, providing clear evidence that supernovae are a significant source of hadronic cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Resolving the origin of these spectral breaks will allow the physics of cosmic ray acceleration and diffusion to be probed

    Convective shutdown in a porous medium at high Rayleigh number

    Convection in a closed domain driven by a dense buoyancy source along the upper boundary soon starts to wane owing to the increase of the average interior density. In this paper, theoretical and numerical models are developed of the subsequent long period of shutdown of convection in a two-dimensional porous medium at high Rayleigh number Ra\mathit{Ra}. The aims of this paper are twofold. Firstly, the relationship between this slowly evolving ‘one-sided’ shutdown system and the statistically steady ‘two-sided’ Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) cell is investigated. Numerical measurements of the Nusselt number Nu\mathit{Nu} from an RB cell (Hewitt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 108, 2012, 224503) are very well described by the simple parametrization Nu=2.75+0.0069Ra\mathit{Nu}= 2. 75+ 0. 0069\mathit{Ra}. This parametrization is used in theoretical box models of the one-sided shutdown system and found to give excellent agreement with high-resolution numerical simulations of this system. The dynamical structure of shutdown can also be accurately predicted by measurements from an RB cell. Results are presented for a general power-law equation of state. Secondly, these ideas are extended to model more complex physical systems, which comprise two fluid layers with an equation of state such that the solution that forms at the (moving) interface is more dense than either layer. The two fluids are either immiscible or miscible. Theoretical box models compare well with numerical simulations in the case of a flat interface between the fluids. Experimental results from a Hele-Shaw cell and numerical simulations both show that interfacial deformation can dramatically enhance the convective flux. The applicability of these results to the convective dissolution of geologically sequestered CO2{\mathrm{CO} }_{2} in a saline aquifer is discussed
