    Understanding the Platform Economy: Signals, Trust, and Social Interaction

    Two-sided markets are gaining increasing importance. Examples include accommodation and car sharing, resale, shared mobility, crowd work, and many more. As these businesses rely on transactions among users, central aspects to virtually all platforms are the creation and maintenance of trust. While research has considered effects of trust-building on diverse platforms in isolation, the overall platform landscape has received much less attention. However, cross-platform comparison is important since platforms vary in their degree of social interaction, which, as we demonstrate in this paper, determines the adequacy and use of different trust mechanisms. Based on actual market data, we examine the mechanisms platforms employ and how frequent users rely on them. We contrast this view against survey data on users’ perceptions of the context-specific importance of these trust-building tools. Our findings provide robust evidence for our reasoning on the relation between platforms’ degree of social interaction and the associated expressive trust cues

    Oxygen migration pathways in layered LnBaCo2O6-Ύ (Ln = La-Y) perovskites

    Funding: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - EP/L016419/1.Layered LnBaCo2O6-ή perovskites are important mixed ionic-electronic conductors, exhibiting outstanding catalytic properties for the oxygen evolution/reduction reaction. These phases exhibit considerable structural complexity, in particular, near room temperature, where a number of oxygen vacancy ordered superstructures are found. This study uses bond valence site energy calculations to demonstrate the key underlying structural features that favor facile ionic migration. BVSE calculations show that the 1D vacancy ordering for Ln = Sm–Tb could be beneficial at low temperatures as new pathways with reduced barriers emerge. By contrast, the 2D vacancy ordering for Ln = Dy and Y is not beneficial for ionic transport with the basic layered parent material having lower migration barriers. Overall, the key criterion for low migration barriers is an expanded ab plane, supported by Ba, coupled to a small Ln size. Hence, Ln = Y should be the best composition, but this is stymied by the low temperature 2D vacancy ordering and moderate temperature stability. The evolution of the oxygen cycling capability of these materials is also reported.Peer reviewe

    Nuclear activity and massive star formation in the low luminosity AGN NGC4303: Chandra X-ray observations

    We present evidence of the co-existence of either an AGN or an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), together with a young super stellar cluster in the 3 central parsecs of NGC4303. The galaxy contains a low luminosity AGN and hosts a number of starburst regions in a circumnuclear spiral, as well as in the nucleus itself. A high spatial resolution Chandra image of this source reveals that the soft X-ray emission traces the ultraviolet nuclear spiral down to a core, which is unresolved both in soft and hard X-rays. The astrometry of the X-ray core coincides with the UV core within the Chandra positioning accuracy. The total X-ray luminosity of the core, 1.5*10^{39} erg/s, is similar to that from some LINERs or from the weakest Seyferts detected so far. The soft X-rays in both the core and the extended structure surrounding it can be well reproduced by evolutionary synthesis models (which include the emission expected from single stars, the hot diffuse gas, supernova remnants and binary systems), consistent with the properties of the young stellar clusters identified in the UV. The hard X-ray tail detected in the core spectrum, however, most likely requires the presence of an additional source. This additional source could either be a weak active nucleus black hole or an ultraluminous X-ray object. The implications of these results are discussed.Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepte

    High Resolution X-Ray Imaging of the Center of IC342

    We presented the result of a high resolution (FWHM~0.5'') 12 ks Chandra HRC-I observation of the starburst galaxy IC342 taken on 2 April 2006. We identified 23 X-ray sources within the central 30' x 30' region of IC342. Our HRC-I observation resolved the historical Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX), X3, near the nucleus into 2 sources, namely C12 and C13, for the first time. The brighter source C12, with L(0.08-10keV)=(6.66\pm0.45)\times10^{38}ergs^-1, was spatially extended (~82 pc x 127 pc). From the astrometric registration of the X-ray image, C12 was at R.A.=03h:46m:48.43s, decl.=+68d05m47.45s, and was closer to the nucleus than C13. Thus we concluded that source was not an ULX and must instead be associated with the nucleus. The fainter source C13, with L(0.08-10keV)=(5.1\pm1.4) x 10^{37}ergs^-1 was consistent with a point source and located $6.51'' at P.A. 240 degree of C12. We also analyzed astrometrically corrected optical Hubble Space Telescope and radio Very Large Array images, a comparison with the X-ray image showed similarities in their morphologies. Regions of star formation within the central region of IC342 were clearly visible in HST H alpha image and this was the region where 3 optical star clusters and correspondingly our detected X-ray source C12 were observed. We found that a predicted X-ray emission from starburst was very close to the observed X-ray luminosity of C12, suggesting that nuclear X-ray emission in IC342 was dominated by starburst. Furthermore, we discussed the possibility of AGN in the nucleus of IC342.     Physical Fitness Training in Patients with Subacute Stroke (PHYS-STROKE): multicentre, randomised controlled, endpoint blinded trial

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety and efficacy of aerobic exercise on activities of daily living in the subacute phase after stroke. DESIGN: Multicentre, randomised controlled, endpoint blinded trial. SETTING: Seven inpatient rehabilitation sites in Germany (2013-17). PARTICIPANTS: 200 adults with subacute stroke (days 5-45 after stroke) with a median National Institutes of Health stroke scale (NIHSS, range 0-42 points, higher values indicating more severe strokes) score of 8 (interquartile range 5-12) were randomly assigned (1:1) to aerobic physical fitness training (n=105) or relaxation sessions (n=95, control group) in addition to standard care. INTERVENTION: Participants received either aerobic, bodyweight supported, treadmill based physical fitness training or relaxation sessions, each for 25 minutes, five times weekly for four weeks, in addition to standard rehabilitation therapy. Investigators and endpoint assessors were masked to treatment assignment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcomes were change in maximal walking speed (m/s) in the 10 m walking test and change in Barthel index scores (range 0-100 points, higher scores indicating less disability) three months after stroke compared with baseline. Safety outcomes were recurrent cardiovascular events, including stroke, hospital readmissions, and death within three months after stroke. Efficacy was tested with analysis of covariance for each primary outcome in the full analysis set. Multiple imputation was used to account for missing values. RESULTS: Compared with relaxation, aerobic physical fitness training did not result in a significantly higher mean change in maximal walking speed (adjusted treatment effect 0.1 m/s (95% confidence interval 0.0 to 0.2 m/s), P=0.23) or mean change in Barthel index score (0 (-5 to 5), P=0.99) at three months after stroke. A higher rate of serious adverse events was observed in the aerobic group compared with relaxation group (incidence rate ratio 1.81, 95% confidence interval 0.97 to 3.36). CONCLUSIONS: Among moderately to severely affected adults with subacute stroke, aerobic bodyweight supported, treadmill based physical fitness training was not superior to relaxation sessions for maximal walking speed and Barthel index score but did suggest higher rates of adverse events. These results do not appear to support the use of aerobic bodyweight supported fitness training in people with subacute stroke to improve activities of daily living or maximal walking speed and should be considered in future guidelines.     XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL spectroscopy of the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during its 2005 outburst

    We report on two simultaneous XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations of the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during the 2005 outburst when the source was in its high-soft state. The 0.3-200 keV spectra are complex with an overall continuum which may be modeled using an absorbed blackbody together with a weak, steep, power-law component. In addition, there is evidence for the presence of both a relativistically broadened Fe K line and a highly photo-ionized absorber. The photo-ionized absorber is responsible for strong K absorption lines of Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in the EPIC pn spectra and blue-shifted (v = -540 +/- 120 km/s) Ne X and Fe XXIV features in the RGS spectra. The parameters of the photo-ionized absorber were different during the two observations with the ionization parameter, logxi, decreasing from 3.60 +/- 0.04 to 3.30 +/- 0.04 erg cm/s and the column density decreasing from (5.2 +/- 1.0) x 10^22 atom cm-2 to (1.5 +/- 1.0) x 10^22 atom cm-2 during the first and second observations as the 0.5-200 keV GRO J1655-40 luminosity decreased by around a half. At 90% confidence the INTEGRAL data show no evidence of a break in the power-law component up to energies of 380 keV and 90 keV for the first and second observations, respectively.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (submitted: 11 April 2006). 12 pages, 7 figure

    High resilience of carbon transport in long-term drought-stressed mature Norway spruce trees within 2 weeks after drought release

    Under ongoing global climate change, drought periods are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity in the future. Under these circumstances, it is crucial for tree\u27s survival to recover their restricted functionalities quickly after drought release. To elucidate the recovery of carbon (C) transport rates in c. 70-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] KARST.) after 5 years of recurrent summer droughts, we conducted a continuous whole-tree 13^{13}C labeling experiment in parallel with watering. We determined the arrival time of current photoassimilates in major C sinks by tracing the 13^{13}C label in stem and soil CO2_{2} efflux, and tips of living fine roots. In the first week after watering, aboveground C transport rates (CTR) from crown to trunk base were still 50% lower in previously drought-stressed trees (0.16 ± 0.01 m h−1^{-1}) compared to controls (0.30 ± 0.06 m h−1^{-1}). Conversely, CTR below ground, that is, from the trunk base to soil CO2_{2} efflux were already similar between treatments (c. 0.03 m h−1^{-1}). Two weeks after watering, aboveground C transport of previously drought-stressed trees recovered to the level of the controls. Furthermore, regrowth of water-absorbing fine roots upon watering was supported by faster incorporation of 13^{13}C label in previously drought-stressed (within 12 ± 10 h upon arrival at trunk base) compared to control trees (73 ± 10 h). Thus, the whole-tree C transport system from the crown to soil CO2_{2} efflux fully recovered within 2 weeks after drought release, and hence showed high resilience to recurrent summer droughts in mature Norway spruce forests. This high resilience of the C transport system is an important prerequisite for the recovery of other tree functionalities and productivity

    Multiwavelength study of the starburst galaxy NGC7714. I: Ultraviolet-Optical spectroscopy

    We have studied the physical conditions in the central 300 pc of the proto-typical starburst galaxy NGC 7714. Our analysis is based on ultraviolet spectroscopy with the HST+GHRS and ground-based optical observations.The data are interpreted using evolutionary models optimized for young starburst regions. The massive stellar population is derived in a self-consistent way using the continuum and stellar absorption lines in the ultraviolet and the nebular emission line optical spectrum. The central starburst has an age of about 4.5 Myr, with little evidence for an age spread. Wolf-Rayet features at the ultraviolet indicates a stellar population of ∌\sim 2000 Wolf-Rayet stars. The overall properties of the newly formed stars are quite similar to those derived, e.g., in 30 Doradus. A standard Salpeter IMF is consistent with all observational constraints. We find evidence for spatial structure within the central 300 pc sampled. Therefore it is unlikely that the nucleus of NGC 7714 hosts a single star cluster exceeding the properties of other known clusters. Contrary to previous suggestions, we find no evidence for a nuclear supernova rate that would significantly exceed the total disk-integrated rate.
