BESTFACT Best Practice Handbook 3
The Best Practice Handbook (BPH) gives an overview about current concepts, strategies and actions in freight transport all over Europe. It is disseminating information on successful projects and practices to increase awareness and share experiences. It is enabling knowledge transfer and supporting transferability for best practices. The third and last Best Practice Handbook focuses on the work done over the entire project, with 157 inventory cases and 60 in-depth analyses. After four years of case collection a wide field of solutions is available. The main findings of the BESTFACT cases are cross-checked and summarised for each of the cluster topics. The consistent form of collection and information provision broadens the structural understanding of best practice cases. The synthesis of cases per topic shows that under consideration of barriers and framework conditions replicable impacts are achievable. NEXT-100 Technical Design Report (TDR). Executive Summary
In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the NEXT-100 detector that
will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bbonu) in Xe-136 at the
Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC), in Spain. The document formalizes
the design presented in our Conceptual Design Report (CDR): an
electroluminescence time projection chamber, with separate readout planes for
calorimetry and tracking, located, respectively, behind cathode and anode. The
detector is designed to hold a maximum of about 150 kg of xenon at 15 bar, or
100 kg at 10 bar. This option builds in the capability to increase the total
isotope mass by 50% while keeping the operating pressure at a manageable level.
The readout plane performing the energy measurement is composed of Hamamatsu
R11410-10 photomultipliers, specially designed for operation in low-background,
xenon-based detectors. Each individual PMT will be isolated from the gas by an
individual, pressure resistant enclosure and will be coupled to the sensitive
volume through a sapphire window. The tracking plane consists in an array of
Hamamatsu S10362-11-050P MPPCs used as tracking pixels. They will be arranged
in square boards holding 64 sensors (8 times8) with a 1-cm pitch. The inner
walls of the TPC, the sapphire windows and the boards holding the MPPCs will be
coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB), a wavelength shifter, to improve the

Recovery Signals of Rhodoliths Beds since Bottom Trawling Ban in the SCI Menorca Channel (Western Mediterranean)
One of the objectives of the LIFE IP INTEMARES project is to assess the impact of bottom trawling on the vulnerable benthic habitats of the circalittoral bottoms of the Menorca Channel (western Mediterranean), designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 network. The present study compares the epibenthic communities of four areas, subjected to different bottom trawl fishing intensity levels. The assignment of fishing effort levels was based on the fishing effort distribution in the area calculated from Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data and the existence of two Fishing Protected Zones in the Menorca Channel. Biological samples were collected from 39 beam trawl stations, sampled during a scientific survey on April 2019. We compare the diversity, composition, and density of the epibenthic flora and fauna, together with the rhodoliths coverage and the morphology of the main species of rhodoliths of four areas subjected to different levels of bottom trawl fishing effort, including one that has never been impacted by trawling. Our results have shown negative impacts of bottom trawling on rhodoliths beds and the first signals of their recovery in areas recently closed to this fishery, which indicate that this is an effective measure for the conservation of this habitat of special interest and must be included in the management plan required to declare the Menorca Channel as a Special Area of Conservation.En prens
Giant intrinsic photoresponse in pristine graphene
When the Fermi level matches the Dirac point in graphene, the reduced charge
screening can dramatically enhance electron-electron (e-e) scattering to
produce a strongly interacting Dirac liquid. While the dominance of e-e
scattering already leads to novel behaviors, such as electron hydrodynamic
flow, further exotic phenomena have been predicted to arise specifically from
the unique kinematics of e-e scattering in massless Dirac systems. Here, we use
optoelectronic probes, which are highly sensitive to the kinematics of electron
scattering, to uncover a giant intrinsic photocurrent response in pristine
graphene. This photocurrent emerges exclusively at the charge neutrality point
and vanishes abruptly at non-zero charge densities. Moreover, it is observed at
places with broken reflection symmetry, and it is selectively enhanced at free
graphene edges with sharp bends. Our findings reveal that the photocurrent
relaxation is strongly suppressed by a drastic change of fast photocarrier
kinematics in graphene when its Fermi level matches the Dirac point. The
emergence of robust photocurrents in neutral Dirac materials promises new
energy-harvesting functionalities and highlights intriguing electron dynamics
in the optoelectronic response of Dirac fluids.Comment: Originally submitted versio
Hydrophilic antioxidant compounds in orange juice from different fruit cultivars: Composition and antioxidant activity evaluated by chemical and cellular based (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) assays
Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by a cellular model (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and chemical
methods (FRAP, TEAC and total phenols by Folin-Ciocalteu assay) in the hydrophilic fraction (phenolic
compounds and ascorbic acid) of orange juices (OJs) from six varieties (Midknight, Delta Seedless, Rohde
Red, Seedless, Early and clone Sambiasi), harvested in two seasons. The contents of phenolic compounds
and ascorbic acid analyzed, respectively, by UPLC and HPLC were 370.04 76.97 mg/L and
52.05 6.69 mg/100 mL. Variety and season significantly influenced (p < 0.05) composition and antioxidant
capacity. TEAC and FRAP values correlated well with individual hydrophilic compounds (R2 > 0.991) but no
correlation with cellular assay was observed. An increase in survival rates between 23% and 38% was
obtained, excepting for two varieties that showed no activity (Rohde Red and Seedless). Narirutin, naringin-d,
ferulic acid-d2, didymin, neoeriocitrin and sinapic acid hexose and caffeic acid-d1 were the phenolic
compounds which contributed to survival rates (R2 = 0.979, p < 0.01
Improving Scientific Knowledge of Mallorca Channel Seamounts (Western Mediterranean) within the Framework of Natura 2000 Network
The scientific exploration of Mallorca Channel seamounts (western Mediterranean) is
improving the knowledge of the Ses Olives (SO), Ausias March (AM), and Emile Baudot (EB)
seamounts for their inclusion in the Natura 2000 network. The aims are to map and characterize
benthic species and habitats by means of a geological and biological multidisciplinary approach:
high-resolution acoustics, sediment and rock dredges, beam trawl, bottom trawl, and underwater
imagery. Among the seamounts, 15 different morphological features were differentiated, highlighting
the presence of 4000 pockmarks, which are seafloor rounded depressions indicators of focused
fluid flow escapes, usually gas and/or water, from beneath the seabed sediments. So far, a total of
547 species or taxa have been inventoried, with sponges, fishes, mollusks, and crustaceans the most
diverse groups including new taxa and new geographical records. Up to 29 categories of benthic
habitats have been found, highlighting those included in the Habitats Directive: maërl beds on the
summits of AM and EB, pockmarks around the seamounts and coral reefs in their rocky escarpments
as well as fields of Isidella elongata on sedimentary bathyal bottoms. Trawling is the main demersal
fishery developed around SO and AM, which are targeted to deep water crustaceans: Parapenaeus
longirostris, Nephrops norvegicus, and Aristeus antennatus. This study provides scientific information
for the proposal of the Mallorca Channel seamounts as a Site of Community Importance and for its
final declaration as a Special Area of Conservation
SiPMs coated with TPB : coating protocol and characterization for NEXT
Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are the photon detectors chosen for the
tracking readout in NEXT, a neutrinoless {\beta}{\beta} decay experiment which
uses a high pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The
reconstruction of event track and topology in this gaseous detector is a key
handle for background rejection. Among the commercially available sensors that
can be used for tracking, SiPMs offer important advantages, mainly high gain,
ruggedness, cost-effectiveness and radio-purity. Their main drawback, however,
is their non sensitivity in the emission spectrum of the xenon scintillation
(peak at 175 nm). This is overcome by coating these sensors with the organic
wavelength shifter tetraphenyl butadienne (TPB). In this paper we describe the
protocol developed for coating the SiPMs with TPB and the measurements
performed for characterizing the coatings as well as the performance of the

Oxidative discolouration in whole-head and cut lettuce: biochemical and environmental influences on a complex phenotype and potential breeding strategies to improve shelf-life
Lettuce discolouration is a key post-harvest trait. The major enzyme controlling oxidative discolouration
has long been considered to be polyphenol oxidase (PPO) however, levels of PPO and subsequent development of discolouration symptoms have not always correlated. The predominance of a latent state of the enzyme in plant tissues combined with substrate activation and contemporaneous suicide inactivation
mechanisms are considered as potential explanations for
this phenomenon. Leaf tissue physical properties have
been associated with subsequent discolouration and
these may be influenced by variation in nutrient
availability, especially excess nitrogen and head maturity at harvest. Mild calcium and irrigation stress has
also been associated with a reduction in subsequent
discolouration, although excess irrigation has been
linked to increased discolouration potentially through
leaf physical properties. These environmental factors,
including high temperature and UV light intensities,
often have impacts on levels of phenolic compounds
linking the environmental responses to the biochemistry
of the PPO pathway. Breeding strategies targeting the
PALand PPOpathway biochemistry and environmental
response genes are discussed as a more cost-effective
method of mitigating oxidative discolouration then
either modified atmosphere packaging or post-harvest
treatments, although current understanding of the
biochemistry means that such programs are likely to
be limited in nature and it is likely that they will need to be deployed alongside other methods for the foreseeable future
Novel genes and sex differences in COVID-19 severity
[EN] Here, we describe the results of a genome-wide study conducted in 11 939 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive cases with an extensive clinical information that were recruited from 34 hospitals across Spain (SCOURGE consortium). In sex-disaggregated genome-wide association studies for COVID-19 hospitalization, genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10−8) was crossed for variants in 3p21.31 and 21q22.11 loci only among males (P = 1.3 × 10−22 and P = 8.1 × 10−12, respectively), and for variants in 9q21.32 near TLE1 only among females (P = 4.4 × 10−8). In a second phase, results were combined with an independent Spanish cohort (1598 COVID-19 cases and 1068 population controls), revealing in the overall analysis two novel risk loci in 9p13.3 and 19q13.12, with fine-mapping prioritized variants functionally associated with AQP3 (P = 2.7 × 10−8) and ARHGAP33 (P = 1.3 × 10−8), respectively. The meta-analysis of both phases with four European studies stratified by sex from the Host Genetics Initiative (HGI) confirmed the association of the 3p21.31 and 21q22.11 loci predominantly in males and replicated a recently reported variant in 11p13 (ELF5, P = 4.1 × 10−8). Six of the COVID-19 HGI discovered loci were replicated and an HGI-based genetic risk score predicted the severity strata in SCOURGE. We also found more SNP-heritability and larger heritability differences by age (<60 or ≥60 years) among males than among females. Parallel genome-wide screening of inbreeding depression in SCOURGE also showed an effect of homozygosity in COVID-19 hospitalization and severity and this effect was stronger among older males. In summary, new candidate genes for COVID-19 severity and evidence supporting genetic disparities among sexes are provided.S
