Using DEA to estimate the importance of objectives for decision makers

In this paper we establish further connections between DEA and Multi-criteria Decision Analysis by suggesting a particular way to estimate preference weights for different objectives using DEA. We claim that the virtual multipliers obtained from a standard DEA model are not suitable to measure the preferences of a decision maker. Our suggestion takes advantage of the parallelism between DEA and the methodology proposed by Sumpsi et al. (1997) by projecting each unit on a linear combination of the elements of the pay-off matrix. Finally, we make an application of the proposed methodology to agricultural economics in a case study with Spanish data.Data Envelopment Analysis, Multicriteria Decision Analysis, preferences, weights, virtual multipliers.

This paper shows a connection between Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the methodology proposed by Sumpsi et al. (1997) to estimate the weights of objectives for decision makers in a multiple attribute approach. This connection gives rise to a modified DEA model that allows to estimate not only efficiency measures but also preference weights by radially projecting each unit onto a linear combination of the elements of the payoff matrix (which is obtained by standard multicriteria methods). For users of Multiple Attribute Decision Analysis the basic contribution of this paper is a new interpretation of the methodology by Sumpsi et al. (1997) in terms of efficiency. We also propose a modified procedure to calculate an efficient payoff matrix and a procedure to estimate weights through a radial projection rather than a distance minimization. For DEA users, we provide a modified DEA procedure to calculate preference weights and efficiency measures which does not depend on any observations in the dataset. Las superficies especiales de manejo de presión en la prevención y tratamiento las úlceras por presión. Revisión de la literatura

Introducción: Las superficies especiales de manejo de presión (SEMP) son unos dispositivos que permiten la redistribución de la presión y por tanto el alivio de la misma en las personas que presentan ulceras por presión o tienen riesgo de padecerlas. Objetivo: Analizar la eficacia del uso de SEMP en la prevención y el tratamiento en pacientes con UPP o con riesgo de padecerlas, a través de lo publicado. Metodología: Revisión de la literatura encontrada entre el 2005 al 2015 en las bases de datos IBECS y PubMed, tanto en inglés como en español. Además, se realizó una búsqueda secundaria a partir de bibliografía de algunos artículos, búsqueda de guías clínicas y de protocolos de actuación enfermera. Se solicitó el protocolo de práctica clínica para el cuidado de personas con úlceras por presión o riesgo del Hospital General Universitario de Elche (HGUE), y se visitó la web del Grupo Nacional para el Estudio y Asesoramiento en Úlceras por Presión y Heridas Crónicas (GNEAUPP). Resultados y conclusiones: Siguiendo las estrategias de búsqueda, se obtuvieron un total de unos 222 documentos aproximadamente, de los cuales solo se eligieron 22 según los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Existe evidencia de que las superficies especiales de manejo de presión previenen el desarrollo de las UPP y ayudan en su tratamiento, en personas con riesgo de padecerlas o que ya padecen, no obstante por sí solas no las previenen ni las curan y no sustituye a la movilización, a los cambios posturales ni a la protección local ante la presión

Multilingual and Cultural Awareness Competences. A Lesson Plan for EFL Teaching in Secondary Education – Year 2 of a Bilingual School

The Key Competences are crucial in the educational systems of the European Union member states. Since their appearance, all of them have been introduced in the corresponding educational curricula. Each one seeks to develop different knowledge, skills and attitudes in European citizens. Multilingual Competence and Competence in Cultural awareness and expression are two of the key competences that are very present when we refer to the teaching of foreign languages. That is why their development is made possible through different activities and tasks that promote communication in languages. Thus, this Master's Thesis presents a teaching proposal, which seeks to develop both key competences in students of Compulsory Secondary Education. It is planned to be implemented in a second Year English as a Foreign Language classroom for a group belonging to the bilingual section. The work concludes with final reflections on the theoretical and practical aspects dealt with.Las Competencias Clave son cruciales en los sistemas educativos de los países miembros de la Unión Europea. Desde su aparición, han venido introduciéndose todas ellas en los correspondientes currículos educativos. Cada una busca desarrollar diferentes conocimientos, habilidades y actitudes en los ciudadanos europeos. La Competencia Multilingüe y la Competencia en Conciencia y expresión culturales son dos de las competencias clave muy presentes cuando nos referimos a la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras. Es por eso por lo que su desarrollo se hace posible mediante distintas actividades y tareas que promuevan la comunicación en lenguas. Así pues, este Trabajo Fin de Máster presenta una propuesta didáctica, en la que se busca desarrollar en los alumnos de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria ambas competencias clave. Development of new methodologies for dating in the forensic field, combining analytical techniques with multivariate regression treatments

318 p.Whenever a crime is committed, there is always a unity of time, place and action that forensic experts will aim to demonstrate throughout the investigation. Determining the succession, simultaneity, frequency or duration of criminal activities as well as the age of objects, persons and traces is therefore one of the most important goals of forensics in reconstructing the crime scene or in finding and understanding the connections between the evidence and the suspects involved therein. However, time has been largely unexplored due to the complexity of the overall challenge at hand, not yet successfully overcome by single cutting-edge techniques. The coupling of such techniques with chemometrics, more specifically with multivariate regression methods, could turn this situation upside down thanks to the development of age quantitation methodologies based on the modelling of the modifications experienced by the evidence in its properties with respect to time. The potential applicability of these chemometric tools, however, remains poorly understood and underexploited due to their recent introduction into forensic dating research and the statistical background required for their optimal application. That is why this thesis focuses on highlighting the usefulness of multivariate regression methods in several forensicfields, such as questioned documents, art forgery and medico-legal death investigation, through the development and validation of dating methodologies in which non-destructive and micro-destructive techniques are applied together with the (orthogonal) partial least squares regression ((O)PLSR) method

Women in American movies: an analysis of three 20th Century films

The American film industry has grown in popularity since the beginning of the 20th century and has become a reference for many foreign countries. The film provides the opportunity to reflect on society, among other things, on the big screen. The rise of the Hollywood industry allowed for the creation of a wide variety of characters, including those belonging to minorities. Women, a socially vulnerable group, have always had a certain role in such motion pictures. Through the study of films from different decades such as Gone With the Wind (1939), Sunset Boulevard (1952), or Annie Hall (1977), popularly known worldwide, we analyze how social contexts influence the creation, stereotyping, and representation of female characters.La industria cinematográfica americana aumentó su popularidad desde inicios del siglo XX y se ha convertido en una referencia para numerosos países extranjeros. El cine brinda la oportunidad de reflejar a través de la gran pantalla, entre otras cosas, a la sociedad. El auge de la industria de Hollywood, dio lugar a la creación de una gran variedad de personajes, incluidos aquellos que pertenecen a las minorías. Las mujeres, un grupo socialmente vulnerable, siempre han tenido un papel determinado en dichas películas. La antinomia del futuro en Kant

This paper presents a reflection about the way in which Kant treats Future in his work, its possibility and conditions. First, I will present a résumé of the principal ideas on this task in his works Dreams os a Spirit Seer and The Conflict of the Faculties , published in 1766 and 1798. In the thirty years between both, Kant wrote his Critical Philosophy. We will see that the problem of the possibility of the speech about Future was always present on his works, and it didn’t change in the deep sense other themes did. Secondly, I will outline the most important ideas of that first part in an Antinomy and I will complete the paper with other relevant considerations in the Critique of the pure Reason. In that way I will try to offer a solution to our principal task: Is it possible to talk with Kant about knowledge refered to the Future?.Me propongo en este artículo desarrollar una reflexión en torno al modo en que se piensa el futuro en la obra de Kant, su posibilidad, presupuestos y condiciones. Para ello resumiré en primer lugar las cuestiones referidas a tal tema presentadas en los Sueños de un visionario y El conflicto de las facultades. Obras publicadas en 1766 y 1798 respectivamente, separadas por lo tanto por más de treinta años y que, de esta forma, encuadran la gran producción crítica del autor. Considero importante que este aspecto sea señalado, pues veremos que la preocupación por un discurso en torno al tiempo futuro es constante en la reflexión kantiana y, a la vez, un tema poco modificado en sus diversos escritos. En segundo lugar, esquematizaré las ideas principales presentadas en la primera parte, ahora en forma de antinomia, y las completaré con otras relevantes consideraciones especialmente de la Crítica de la razón pura, para intentar dar una respuesta satisfactoria al tema que nos ocupa: ¿Es posible en Kant hablar de conocimiento referido al tiempo futuro?
